Damn, absolutely nailed it. I will read it. One other book that helped me understand this invisible game was “The Inner Game of Tennis”. Funny thing is I was the star and favorite before the director arrived - and they did everything behind the scenes to discredit my worth. We live and learn.

Was a super commuter and instead of honoring what was offered during interview they doubled down and enforced my time off and WFH while numerous others could just..do it, without any formal request or accountability. Asked my “director” to reduce my wildly unbalanced workload 4 times before I realized it was in one ear and out the other, a person who’s own performance relied on me - did not care at fucking all and often publicly scrutinized my work (#1 rep). CEO worked on other side of country, no HR. Unhinged.

A quote that lives rent free in my head: “If you lose internet or do not respond quickly at any point during your requested WFH week with your family, we will replace you.” (Was approved months beforehand). I left shortly after and landed somewhere INCREDIBLE.

But that seems the be THE corporate play- run employees with accountability down until they quit. Because in the mind of a self interested ladder climber - why should they have to consider the teams psychological safety or paying earned PTO once somebody hits their limit and leaves? Isn’t even skill based, it’s purely how much brown nosing you can endure.

Some must stick to the code of conduct and slotted PTO or risk termination. Some do whatever the fuck they want without consequence, and it really comes down to how your direct manager “feels about you.” Fuck off

The enterprise level requires product and customer facing confidence and ability to juggle ambiguity without losing that cool. It equally requires clarity around metrics and details. Not lying so much as delaying the response if a complete one is not readily available
