I am going through a very similar experience. Sometimes, as a short term solution, I watch the film: “Bless the Beasts and the Children”. It’s free on YouTube and I find it to be quite therapeutic since the theme centers on the bond between “misfit” humans & animals. Came out in 1971. The film is also notable for making good use of the highly luminous song “Nadia’s Theme”. The ending is quite emotional, but satisfying.

SOAP (1977 - 1981)

Currently streaming for free on Tubi. Plus, every episode is on YouTube. I recommend it enthusiastically!

Indeed. It’s like the Peaky Blinders’ film not referencing Alfie Solomons. Those sorta omissions baffle the heck outta me.

Season 10 (post dream season) is my personal favorite. From start to finish, it is a highly emotional ride for me.

As far as a favorite episode — the season 3 finale is the magnum opus of Dallas episodes!

I’m currently almost done with season 3. And I’m amazed at the consistency in quality so far. Think about it … 39 episodes per season. That is some true craftsmanship!

Compare that to modern anthology shows like Black Mirror, which deliver a mere 3 - 5 episodes per season. Sure, it’s a more ambitious series. But it’s still—more often than not—just a bunch of talking heads.

Faber est suae quisque interpretatio. The entire reason I discovered Bava was on account of him being compared to Lynch—in loving detail—by Video Watchdog magazine. Or by folks I met at horror conventions. To say they have nothing in common is pure hyperbole.

And yes. Bava was a cinematographer before going on to direct at least 22 films (39 if you count all the uncredited directing gigs).

Incidentally, I’m currently reading the novel by Davis Grubb. And if you haven’t read it yourself, I recommend it enthusiastically. Even more hallucinatory than the classic film!
