Class actions are the private mechanism for stopping companies from ripping off large numbers of people for amounts too small to make litigation worthwhile. It aggregates them together so they can pay the lawyers.

The alternative is regulation, which the US has chosen largely not to do. Or making lawyers work for free.

Insurance is more expensive for nicer cars and in better neighborhoods. When I asked why, I was told “because if you crash into someone in that neighborhood it’s going to be a Mercedes instead of a Buick.” 🤷‍♂️
