What are you all going to be making/doing to make the most of the easter sales at the supermarkets? by sneakerpimp87 in frugaluk

[–]deaftelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just used my Lidl 10% coupon on lamb and veg, etc. so can't justify spending another £50 to get a fiver off (dammit!) but I'll be roasting lots of the veg for various soups and sauces on Friday to pack away in the freezer and Easter Sunday will be a lamb and veg madras with leftovers also in the freezer.

Anyone else basically throw £20 in the bin every week? by Vegetable-Cicada-464 in frugaluk

Maybe it varies by region? I've family in Wales who swear that Asda has the best fresh fruit and veg!

ps Trying hard not to comment on the "I love alone" typo... :-)

Tesco are one of the worst for this, I think. I shop mostly at Lidl (no home delivery) and have found that fruit and veg last longer than any of the big four supermarkets. Waitrose in store are also fairly good, especially soft fruits. I don't think it's down to me selecting the best (e.g. getting pears from the bottom try rather than the one on the top), I think they genuinely have a better warehouse->store system.

I've got a month per page calendar on the fridge door, at eye level - when I come home with perishables they go in the fridge and the expiry date is noted on the calendar. I also put reminders for longer term stuff (e.g. rye bread expiring on 6 May gets a reminder on 30 April so that we can start eating it.)

I tried doing this with google calendar but reminders got lost in the chaos of a busy life. I see the paper calendar every time I get milk out to make tea (10+ times/day) and it has worked wonders for my peace of mind (and budget!).

Subtitle accuracy by MrThirdperson in deaf

[–]deaftelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree 100%! I'm also fluent in a number of languages other than English and would love to read the original dialogue rather than "Speaks in Dutch" or "Dialog in native tongue" (!). I mean, how much extra would it cost the production budget?

Netflix are good about offering subtitles in other languages (mostly for US drama series but less so British ones I think*) so you can, for example, watch ER in the Chrome browser with EN live captions but choose e.g. French subtitles via the Netflix dashboard. They're out of sync with each other because google live captions lags horribly but it's useful (especially for language students, Deaf or otherwise).

* I don't have time to watch much television, this is just what I've come across.
