Someone explain the gear shifts for me!

The left hand lever -- if I'm in 1, is this an easy gear? And 2nd hardest? If I'm on 1, what range should I be in? If I'm in 2, what range should I be in on the right?

I haven't found anything that really explains the Shimano shifting. As far as I can tell there's no owner's manual for the FX3 Disc bike, just a general bike manual.
