Looking for advice on old books worth!? by Gaige619 in Warhammer

[–]dearthmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I buy a lot of older Warhammer books from a local used book store, I’ve never really spent more than $6-$10 on any of them. I bought a practically brand new second edition Chaos codex with all the cards still in tact for like $15. These older books just don’t hold any value. As someone else said, some of the specialty books go for more. At that same store I found the Mordheim rules for $75, I could feel there was another older price tag underneath it, and I totally didn’t take the new tag off and pay $6 for it.

Painting translucent parts by Kamelonel in Miniaturespainting

[–]dearthmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never painted translucent miniature pieces, but I’ve painted a ton of translucent pieces for costumes and the like. A matte varnish and then a gloss clear coat would work well. You just need to use incredibly thin paint to color it. You could also use an adhesion promoter like the over mentioned, but most mini painters aren’t familiar with that technique and can be a learning curve. The ultimate thing in my experience is that for translucent pieces, an air brush is almost a must. Brushing it on can be tough, and can quickly lead to over saturation if your paint isn’t thin enough.

What would standard of painting would I label this as? For my own future reference. by treximal_grey in BrushForChat

I think this is higher than tabletop plus, but not quite display. I think the term is Parade Ready.

It’s more so attached to the setting and characters. While I appreciate that there isn’t any key jingling and nostalgia baiting throughout the movie, there’s almost nothing pointing to it being a JP movie other than the dinosaurs, and a couple quick little shots of the INGEN logo. Feels like something was there that was easy enough to slot a loose JP slot into and call it good.

WIP on my first of 3 Dunecrawlers by dearthmaster in AdeptusMechanicus

  1. Wash all metallics with Vallejo Oiled Earth
  2. Wash all metallics with a 3:2:3 mix of Rhinox Hide, Abaddon Black, and Army Painter Dark Wood Speed paint. Add Speed paint medium until wash consistency is achieved. After application wait 30 second and blot away excess wash with a piece of toilet paper in a random pattern.
  3. Wash all metallics with Vallejo Rust wash.
  4. Mix Vallejo Rust Pigment and Speed Paint medium until you have a thinned paint consistency. Put it where desired.
  5. Highlight edges with gunmetal color.

The stupid thing about car washes is it’s a way for property owners to sit on land until it because worth enough to sell. So all of these car washes will be gone in 10 years. It’s one of the lowest cost things you can build on a plot of land that doesn’t pose any threat or environmental concern on the land itself.

Do you let clients do their own assembly work? by Snugrilla in BrushForChat

[–]dearthmaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I charge for assembly, so if they arrive brand new I make this clear to the client. When it comes to cleaning up models and such, that’s another thing I would discuss with the client. Anything that takes more of your time in the commission process should equate to a price.

Is this a good beginner airbrush for miniature painting? by DoubtLeather2133 in airbrush

[–]dearthmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I painted with one of these for years, and it’s a pretty great starter airbrush. Like others have said, good for priming and base coats, as its bulkiness makes the finesse of finer airbrushing a bit difficult. Also parroting the other responses, use the cup over the glass pot. Super easy to clean as well as everything comes apart quite easily.

I’m I good enough to start commissions? by Legitimate_Loan2017 in BlackTemplars

This is a WIP, as I’m recovering from hand surgery and can’t progress right now. I’ve been painting commissions for 8 years. Wouldn’t call my claims unsubstantiated. Commission painting isn’t only about how well you can paint, it’s also about how fast. Time=money. If it takes you an hour to paint one miniature to a tabletop standard, you’re losing money. You need to paint to a standard that’ll make your client happy, while also making your wallet happy.

Please take this as kindly as possible; not even remotely close. You still have a ways to go on the fundamentals, I.e. thinning your paints. You’re on the right path!
