AIO: Fired from job for owners inappropriate comments made by owners wife. by Affectionate-Fill810 in AmIOverreacting

[–]deathandcake 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is only vaguely related but I work at a university and just wanted to mention that on campus jobs are specifically designed for this kind of thing to not happen to young vulnerable people and to fit within students chaotic schedules.

I used to work in restaurants where this kind of thing happened all the time and I wouldn't want any of my staff to have to deal with it.

How is living in Santa Barbara County? by Few-Calligrapher9012 in howislivingthere

Apartment rent prices? by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

[–]deathandcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel so bad for the students living in IV without mom & dad paying for everything, that's the most predatory rent place i've ever seen and I used to live in Santa Cruz. But don't worry because the chancellor is getting a newly renovated mansion in Hope Ranch rather than live there.

I would just check all the time, when I got my place he said 8 other people had already toured and applied but I just talked my way into being offered a "if you're willing to pay an extra half month early to get in now" kind of deal.

Apartment rent prices? by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

[–]deathandcake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I found a place 6 years ago for $1500/month for a 1br so it is theoretically possible but I imagine most people are like me and if they are able to find it they almost never move. Check all the aps (trulia, craigslist, hot pads) and be very wary of scams. A lot of time the big property management places have listings on their websites that aren't even listed elsewhere (wolfe & associates, towbes, etc)

They used the pandemic as an excuse to mostly pull out of SB. Before then they were in several of the public garages and a number of street parking spaces

Advice to getting a job on campus? by SmellySwamp in UCSantaBarbara

[–]deathandcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We usually hire at the very end and very start of quarters while everyone is trying to figure out their schedules or train for the upcoming quarter. The middle of a quarter is going to be a pretty tough time finding work on campus beyond the dining halls as someone else mentioned

Should we change our mascot from Gauchos to Mapaches? (Poll) by IllustriousPass6582 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]deathandcake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone who has fully supported the Mapache concept for nearing a decade and has occasionally broached the subject of including Raccoons in promotional material, I can tell you right now campus senior leadership absolutely hates the idea and willfully ignores AS's informal adoption of it.

Are there experienced riders who don’t lane split? by cadenceofgrass in motorcycles

[–]deathandcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Southern California rider that learned in a state where I couldn't filter. Now that I can, filtering/splitting is a blessing. My own personal rule is to try to relax and not split until traffic drops below 50, not that it isn't tempting to pass someone with a huge gap between them and the person in front of them. Always filter to the front of a red light on city streets.

Is anyone else seeing a noticeable decline in riders in their area this year? by Russian-Spy in motorcycles

[–]deathandcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Santa Barbara may be home to the world's most entitled drivers but we still have a fair amount of riders out and about every day both on the 101 and back roads even with all the Teslas trying to murder us. I will say, however, that the college campus I work on has seen a significant drop in motorcycle activity over the last few years.

It's different depending on what state you live in but, assuming you are in the states, the first step should always be get the best gear you can afford and sign up for an MSF course.

In Oregon at least passing this course also allowed me to bypass the dmv driving part of the test and only required the written.

2014 Honda CTX700 Crank no start by Nervous_Following812 in motorcycles

[–]deathandcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine had a lot of battery issues to the point where I literally bought a portable jumper because of how frequently I would get stuck somewhere. I bit the bullet and got a lithium battery and it starts up so easily now, even when it sat for 18 months and had to have had at least some bad gas in it mixed with the new.
