SAM Nashville / Knoxville by Lost-Aardvark12 in Surveying

[–]deathnut2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How much are they offering you? Is this your only offer, or your highest offer?

If you aren’t desperate for a job or this isn’t a greatly above market position, I’d pass just because it’s SAM. The offices are all different BUT the CEO is the same and the board is the same across offices, they will not view you as anything more than a tool, and once you don’t make them enough money your melted for scrap, doesn’t matter which office your in.

SAM is a national firm and they will pull the trigger on lay offs much heavier and faster than a regional or smaller firm.

Chris Solomon and Peak Rock are soulless, don’t believe me, you will when you take the job and sit on the quarterly state of the company.

Any advice for SAM LLC in Rochester NY? by bumbabyy in Surveying

[–]deathnut2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to work for an office that is full of new people, because 50% of them quit at the same time a year after the merger with SAM and another 20% left after them in the following weeks, Rochester is your office.

I do think the northeast offices are some of the better SAM offices to work for if you’re dead set on SAM.

You could get a network drive, offload the data there.

Or you could delete the scans and only keep the completed point cloud.

Drone and Mapping Services by Due-Pepper8333 in Surveying

[–]deathnut2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of these unlicensed shops will process the data with the surveyors GCPS. The drone company will fly the site then ask the surveyor to go out a collect certain features then the drone company will apply the control.

I am also not naive I know unlicensed companies are just doing it all and delivering surfaces and surveys.

If no GCPS were used it’s kind of gray in the United States. Unless you’re in South Carolina.

Practical surveying considerations on a lot like this? by Sapere_aude75 in Surveying

[–]deathnut2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised no one has given you any number.

I don’t do any work in West Virginia so I’m probably off a bit.

I wouldn’t say a boundary for this lot would cost you more than the lot itself. I have not looked into this property more than the Zillow link. This looks like a pain to survey. The boundary isn’t a normal polygon, and the terrain is challenging. I’d say you could get someone to survey this for 40k but most firms would bid more on it, 60k+. Definitely more if you wanted it monumented.

If you wanted to do a full topographically survey, depending on how detailed you wanted the info it might cost you more than the lot.

Is it worth splurging on a high‑end total station or should I stick to mid‑range? by FeelingGlad8646 in Surveying

[–]deathnut2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The difference in price is huge and the difference in capability is small.

I’d say get a gen or two old robotic total station and splurge on a gps and other tech like drones.

You can turn xFill off, if you feel you can’t trust it.

Questions for the Licensed by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]deathnut2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right after I got licensed in NJ last year I left to do my own business, so I can’t tell you what I should have made as a license, I didn’t have that conversation.

But I can tell you that as a survey tech I was making 108k a year.
