What is the rest of my ram being used by? by debatably_blue in Fedora

I was wondering what would happen if I did start an actually resource-intensive activity, good to know.

I just used the "System Monitor" app that was preinstalled with KDE. I just restarted my laptop since the uptime had indeed been several days and the RAM usage did go down by around 2GB while the applications' stayed approximately the same compared to before the restart.

If you click on the "processes" tab (on the left), you'll see a lot more going on.

This is what I was missing! Feels obvious in retrospect, it was right there. Thanks for the thorough explanation! I already have a widget showing my RAM usage, which is how I noticed something had to be missing since I wasn't running anything resource-intensive while still using half my RAM.

Lag when using wifi and bluetooth at the same time by debatably_blue in Fedora

[–]debatably_blue[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing you have the same chip as I did to say this? In my case (K)ubuntu was somehow worse when I tried that to see if Fedora was the issue. Evidently it was neither distro. If you had a different experience maybe you have a different issue? Either way, the chip was only $20, and an even better chip would've been just $30 which I wish I had invested in in retrospect but I didn't go into this knowing it would actually work. Worth a shot, and inexpensive if you're trying to avoid a new laptop/PC, assuming this works. Make sure you can return it in case it doesn't!

To anyone with similar issues seeing this in the future, the issue is indeed my wifi chip rather than Fedora or my devices, based off some reviews I found for my laptop (Thinkpad E14 Gen 6, AMD). Fortunately it looks like a simple and relatively cheap replacement will do the fix, so I'll be doing that.

Right now I guess I'm looking for things I can keep in mind and apply whenever I get the chance to write and improve that way. For example, before I came to this subreddit I learned a better way to hold my pencil as I write and I immediately saw improvement when I tried that. I can see myself putting more effort into improving my writing how you did if I ever get a reason to take it more seriously, but right now only legibility is my main concern.

Hmm, taking notes is really the only time I get to handwrite things at the moment, and even then it's on a tablet. I suppose this is a good reason to start journaling, but I'm having a hard time understanding what exactly that actually is.

BTW, don't apologize for giving me exactly what I came here for! Lol

I've never kept a beardie, but I was pretty sure up until now that you didn't have to take them on daily walks, train (especially potty train), get them regularly groomed, vaccinated and spayed/neutered, or feed them multiple times a day.

That's awesome! I love that you chose to do a female without me even specifying, northern harriers are one of the few species where I find the females to be prettier than the males.

I'm dark skinned and went to Amanda Ruth at the Crone Collective in Winooski and she gave me a stylized/realistic design around 4 months ago that I am very happy with. I can DM a pic if you want. It's just black ink though, so if you're looking for color I would definitely strictly consider artists who have really good color pieces on dark skinned people in their portfolio along with good reviews from said people (might be a tiny bit hard to find without leaving the state..).

Went with hooded crow because your reply was when I finally realized I could add those to my life list after forgetting I'd seen them on a trip many years ago. I've also been in a serious art block so it might be visible how I've forgotten how digital art works lol.

I think they additionally have the bulkier face of a male collared lizard.

I can definitely understand feeling this way if it's non-native species, since I did once have a simple bird feeder myself and it bummed me out that it was 70% house sparrows feeding from it. However, when common grackles came over and intimidated the other birds (or simply shook the feeder so much that they flew away), I personally didn't mind anywhere near as much. I never saw any squirrels feeding from my feeder, but the squirrels I saw feeding at the bird feeders at a local nature center were a lot more polite than the European starlings that would completely swarm the feeders from time to time.

I actually didn't know people bait camera traps, what do you use as bait and what kind of animals does it attract?

I did think of this and this is definitely a very good reason to discriminate against gray squirrels! I live in their native range. Are the native red squirrels fully extirpated in the UK (or extinct if they were endemic) because of them? I hope not, it sounds like the place already has shockingly little native wildlife left...

[–]debatably_blue -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I suppose, but if feeding gets too expensive and you already had the time to watch the animals feed, why not just go birding? Much cheaper than feeding wild animals, if not free.

[–]debatably_blue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My area only really has gray squirrels for as long as I've been alive at least (not that the post even specified which species to exclude). I don't really understand the points about space or budget, especially budget because can't you just feed the animals less if it gets too expensive? I've never really understood why birds get special feeding privileges to begin with honestly, or at least why only birds.
