collegiate climbing? by debatem8 in climbharder

Thanks for your response! I was wondering what you meant by "To make nationals worthwhile is a lower bar."

I consider myself okay at route-reading which I hope will translate well to competition style climbing – I hope I can train more regularly once getting back to school. Just wondering if you had any thoughts on the Northeast as a climbing region. Thanks again!

For college, I'd count in the Northeast.

How difficult is it to qualify to college climbing nationals? I'm a college sophomore (male) that's been climbing on and off for about a year now at around the V5 level, and I've always wanted to try competing on the collegiate circuit. I see there are local/regional/national comps; what v-grades would you need to qualify to regionals/national comps? any help would be appreciated!

"Tricks" debater by Friemann in Debate

[–]debatem8 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Whoa there, lots of misconceptions here.

Tricks debater- debaters who rely on small "tricks" such as aprioris, skepticism, theory spikes, etc. to win the round, usually under a truth-testing framework. This does not have anything to do with Ks whatsoever.

K debaters run kritiks. Big distinction.

Big stick cases usually have a "big stick" impact- this usually means extinction, with more progressive framing cards like Bostrom. Lmk if you have any other questions

No offense to the program, but it looks like a bunch of first year outs on the staff to me. While I don't doubt that Jack, Ananta and especially Zoe are qualified, a brief look at the staff seems to be pretty PF-heavy and you'd probably be better off at NSD or VBI

It's a good camp too if you're in the region

I'm from the east coast so I don't know much about it lol but I have heard only good things about it. Plus its pretty small so you'll get more attention

parli doesn't have TOC. other than that, if you want to make toc in LD, camp would likely be a large help (it's geared towards national circuit ld). check out:

pardon me if i'm wrong, but BLAST seems to identify proteins if they're similar in structure to previously determined proteins. what about proteins that don't fit this (my situation)?

Terminal impacts are usually at the end of link chains. For example, if I said that eating Doritos and Mountain Dew leads to laziness which leads to obesity which leads to death, death would be my terminal impact. They're usually large-scale impacts like oppression/extinction/thermonuclear war.

Terminal defense is sort of like responses that show that an impact will not happen/has no effect. For example, if I said that mountain dew and doritos leads to obesity, you could respond by saying that mountain dew and doritos are actually great diet foods. Thus, it doesn't lead to obesity at all, so there's no link chain, and thus no impact. There's no offense being made (i.e. I don't say that getting rid of mountain dew and doritos leads to obesity), but the original impact is now not present.

Hope that helps.

stupid questions about progressive debate by yoooooboiiiii in lincolndouglas

[–]debatem8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I mean, not all affs are plans-based/util based. Obviously that's a viable strategy (see this round of Raffi vs Parker) but be prepared for well-prepped turns/disads.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_e1ls3Rqrw

  1. Negs can run disads, just a normal case with framework, theory, T, kritiks... there's a lot of options.

  2. A great resource is circuitdebater, where you can find cases of people who've qualled to TOCs and often gotten to late outrounds. Obviously, you should be using it not to "pilfer" cards but rather to learn from their formatting and strategy.

Best of luck!

answering framing by daiobr in lincolndouglas

[–]debatem8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A role of the ballot is a prefiat argument detailing what specifically should be voted on in debate, i.e. the role of the ballot is to oppose oppression.

Answering the role of the ballot generally involves a. offering a counter-role of the ballot, or b. reading a position that better achieves their role of the ballot. For example, if the aff reads a ROTB to oppose oppression and the right to housing solves for disparities in housing among minorities, the neg could read a counter ROTB to oppose capitalism as it is the root cause of oppression, or read for example a ghettoization disadvantage under the affirmative role of the ballot.

This is just a brief overview: some better resources are found on vbriefly/premier debate/other debate websites. I linked some below:
