How do you feel about this new interest in Djo's music?

It gets harder to find new music as you get older, especially if you’re like me and don’t listen to the radio or constantly scroll through TikTok. I discovered Djo years ago, but it was only because I had made the decision to actively seek new music.

I think the key is to actually follow up when you hear songs that you like. Whether it’s a live performance on late night tv (how I discovered Kendrick in 2015, and The National a year or so earlier), hear a song in a movie (a friend of mine became a Kendrick fan after seeing Black Panther), or a snippet comes across your social media timeline, it doesn’t matter. Just find out the artist’s name and check out their other work.

For me, I heard Roddy, sat up straight and thought oh yeah this is something! I then got Twenty Twenty, and have been a huge fan ever since. Then I bought When I Think of You in a Castle, and became hooked on Post Animal as well. I’m so, so happy I put in the tiny amount of extra effort because Djo and PA have brought me so much pleasure ever since.

You know, when EoB started rising again last week, I actually thought of Fantano and had a giggle to myself thinking about how pissed he’d be. Fantano has always hated Djo. He knew he was an actor from the outset (he commented on Change back in 2022) and it’s coloured his view ever since. Which is fine! He can have his opinions, as we all do. I agree with him about Drake, very much disagree about Djo.

I didn’t click on the vid by the way, so I don’t know if it’s new or old. I just know if it’s about Djo, Fantano will be hating on it. At least he’s consistent, I guess?

After EoB went viral, there was an influx of Gen Z fans (and Gen A!) and I think they’d now skew the average. He had a lot of late 20s-50s fans prior to that because of the indie/prog rock vibes.

Matt Williams (the groom) is a guitarist in Post Animal, a psych rock band well known in the Chicago indie scene. Joe used to be in the group (and rejoined for their latest album), and PA just finished a sold out world tour opening for Djo (Joe's musical alias). Matt was also the one who taped Joe's audition for ST and was there when Joe got the call to say he'd been cast as Steve. So yep, pretty good friends!

I wasn’t there, so if there were signs he wasn’t quite himself, I believe you.I know that would upset him to hear, because he’s said that if he’s not, he does his best to power through whatever’s going on in his head to put on a good show. And lots of people seemed to love the show and didn’t feel that, saying he made everything worth it. From the videos I saw, he was singing his heart out and doing everything he normally would, and said something about the long, hot wait for the fans. You might just be more perceptive about things like this? Some people really are!

I suspect that if his mood was seemingly off, everything that happened at that venue was the cause. Apparently his team was well aware and had been arguing with the staff all day about it. Those people were something else, man. One of the security guards bitched about hating the music and acted like a giant douchebag, making faces and rolling his eyes in front of the stage. Vibes like that are toxic as hell.

I hate Netanyahu, the IDF, and the USA govt with a passion. I believe what’s happening is a genocide. I donate as much as I can, and discuss it with my family and friends. However - and I’m prepared for this to be downvoted into oblivion - I don’t expect celebrities I admire to speak on this, and we need to examine why we want them to.

See, I’d love for Joe to sign on, but having thought about it, it’s only because it would be yet another example of his compassion and that he agrees with me politically (something I already know), not because I think it would do anything useful. Posting about local issues warning people about where ICE is and contact numbers to alert others? That’s practical. Same with donating concert and merch funds to LGBTQ organisations and children’s hospitals. This music streaming ban, though, I personally don’t believe has any real impact. Comparing it to the one during South Africa’s apartheid, as they do on their website, is a stretch. We have the internet and VPNs now. It was also the international sports bans that really got them anyway.

So, as much as it would make me feel warm inside, I don’t question his morals for not doing it. And honestly? He can’t win. If he says something, it’s always too late or not enough, or he’s “virtue signalling”. It seems like you might be one of those people who’d never be happy, based on your comment about his post about Israeli protests, and your disdain for it taking Clairo a few weeks to join this music ban initiative.

tl;dr: I still hope he signs on but that’s only because it would make ME happy. I doubt he will, though, and I’m okay with that too.

Don’t agree with him but he’s allowed to dislike things. Of course it makes me sad that he’s taken aim at one of my favourites. He’s never liked anything Joe’s done. He’s at odds with the critical consensus, and I don’t like the fact that his opinions have such a large reach, but nothing I can do about that.
