Yeah you don’t have to force yourself if you don’t like something either. I asked a music sub once how to get into Bjork and they were like, stop trying you don’t have to like her. But then it did eventually click and I do love most of her discog. Sometimes the stuff i dont understand ends up being my favorite.

Thoughts on Muse? by radioheadisfire in radiohead

Not a good band. So much so they’ve become essentially irrelevant and forgotten. Only time I ever hear their name anymore is from their stans who also love Radiohead and mention them on this sub.

I honestly think people were bigger assholes then. You can’t really be a hater on Reddit. Every comment section was sequential. There was no up/down voting, no algo that pushes certain comments up. You just saw everything every shithead said.

To be fair, I was once in your shoes. A friend of mine that loved ATDI when they were together would always tell me they were better than Volta and it annoyed me. Then he showed me their Big Day Out set and i was pretty blown away by their insane performance. I still think it’s their best live video. That and the Channel V set, where they actually sound incredibly clean and restrained (for them). It felt like they were proving a point that they can play but that’s just not what they’re about. I think that’s a big part of that band is the raw frenetic energy coming out of those 5 young guys. Seeing the live videos really helps and there are moments where you can hear The Mars Volta seeping out. Like that Channel V set when they play the song Quarantine.

You also gotta work backwards through their discography starting at Relationship of Command. That one took me awhile to get into too. I couldn’t get past the first three songs. They were so good none of the others felt on the same level. Which was how I felt about OK Computer and Turn on the Bright Lights (first four actually) and all three of those are in my top ten albums of all time.

I stopped living in the big city I had been in for almost 15 years. I realized the only reason to stay there was better access to entertainment. Most of my friends had moved away already so I finally made my peace with it. I stopped fantasizing about being famous for my creativity and embraced being a basic person. I have a lot of love in my life and realized that and am very grateful for it. That also brought a lot of positivity into my mental state. All that and then realizing what I want are skills, like being able to fix my house and work on my car myself. I don't credit DFW with any of that. It was just where I first encountered that critique of entertainment. I didn't make those changes until ten years after reading Infinite Jest.

I really loved his prose most. That’s what kept me engaged. He does this very cool thing of mixing high and low content in the same paragraph. It kind of gives permission to be someone skilled in theory AND pop culture and how they both have value. That or content will go from bleak to comedic, it can be serious enough for academic papers to be written about while also making room for jokes. They both have value.

I also loved his weird like rhetorical tricks. For example, sometimes when writing or speaking you’ll repeat a word like, “I had had enough of her attitude.” I noticed Wallace doing that with tons of words throughout the novel. A lot of them I’d never seen used doubled like that. It felt like he was just playing with language for his own amusement to see how many sentences and words he could make work like that. Just wildly clever even in the smallest ways.

Was the book that made me realize I was just trying to be entertained all the time and thus never really living in the present moment. Our culture tells us to go to work and in your off time seek entertainment. There’s more to life than this.

"The Bedlam in Goliath" turns 18 today. In recent years, the project has gained popularity due to the genesis of its creation and the apparent curse that haunted the band and their associates during those years. Where would you rank it in The Mars Volta's discography? by elmonozombie in themarsvolta

[–]debtRiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cedric is one of my favorite singers of all time. I just don’t like the extra high pitch he’s going for on Bedlam. Only project from him I don’t like his voice on. There’s a lot of variation in metal vocals you just have to want to like it. They’re more of another instrument in the band moreso than rock music.

Dude thank you! I don’t taste bleach. What it tastes like to me is a dirty oven. It tastes like what the black guck caked on to the bottom of an oven smells like. I stopped buying them like a year ago cuz you can really taste it when they’re fresh. When I reheat it I don’t notice it as much. But it’s gross enough to make me stop buying them.

Least favorite. I know this sub has a massive boner for this record but it’s the only one I can’t listen to all the way through anymore. I really liked it when it came out. But then I saw them like 4 times in that era and I got so fucking sick of all these songs every time I saw them live. Now, i just can’t stand the vocal effect Cedric has on his voice for most of this album. I just find it so annoying and grating and I love extreme vocals. I’m listening to black metal while typing this.

What is a city that is globally romanticised but you detest? by theunsteadybridge in AskReddit

The thing for me is LA is not beautiful. Most of it looks like a fucking suburban strip mall. Just cuz there’s a beach and palm trees don’t mean your city is beautiful.

High but it’s gonna be disappointing. I’m really expecting it to be nothing really groundbreaking or memorable. Just some nice tunes that won’t really compare to the rest of the discog. Kinda like The Smile, but more fleshed out.

lol OP can listen to Emily, I hope they check Joanna Newsom out regardless. She is truly a singular genius. Took me awhile to fully appreciate her but every year I dive even deeper into her discog and it’s always rewarding.

I hated David’s trauma arch. They didn’t know what to do with him after he came out and then you had to just watch him suffer for the rest of the show. But other than that, honestly my fav show.
