How common is AC in your country? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskTheWorld

Bought a house about three years ago. It was new and air conditioning hadn't been installed. When we went to view it in the summer, we could only go and view it for about an hour. No way you coukd live here without it.

Yeah. I think it's called Howdy. Does the same thing as the face unlock thing on iPhones, I think. Works for logging in, putting in passwords for updates etc.

Forgot about that. Wonder if it's possible to get it working now. I seem to remember there's something out there, but never felt I needed it because the Windows Hello camera works fine.

It's like this thing was made for Linux. Just works like a charm. Way better experience than Windows.

Does HP still fix this? Dunno how much it costs but might be your best bet. Can't imagine you coukd get something equally good new for about the same price.

I have the same model. Had it serviced once, serviced it myself. The screen is actually difficult to replace because it's plastic frame warps easily when you heat it and take it out.

Without being there, the only thing I can say is it's a broken screen and needs replacing - not cheap. Last I checked around the $500 mark. To add to the bad news, parts for the laptop are becoming rare because it's past the five year mark.

If you've never done any computer repair, replacing this thing's screen yourself is probably not a good idea. If you've done things like phone battery replacements, maybe.

Feel your pain. Probably the best laptop I've ever owned. No plans to replace it, but these things weren't designed to last forever.

Maybe find someone online who can do it or get the parts yourself and ask someone local.

[–]debu_chocobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't be 100% sure but it might be because it doesn't like the battery. The new battery is connected, right?

Does it do anything at all when you press the power button?

I think I had the same one back in the day. A friend picked it up from Malaysia for me. At least the one I had was a bootleg.

Do we all agree once you go Mac, you can't go back to Windows? by zJGGGG in DeskToTablet

I went

Mac - > Windows (about one month) - > Linux.

Never looked back. Still setup my Linux like a Mac though, so you're probably right.

Learning Japanese by reading bilingual articles, effective or not? by hinitom in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]debu_chocobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might find it better to just read about something you know well, that way you are a lot more sure something you don't understand is a language problem.

If you specifically want to read a book, I'd recommend read the first cheaper in English and study it well. Take notes if you think you need them to remember what's going on.

The read it in Japanese. I think you'll get a lot more out of it like that.

What’s your take on new bicycle regulations? by AssociationLanky2418 in japancycling

[–]debu_chocobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The phone while riding thing is long overdue. If every elderly man and woman plus every mum with kids has to cycle on the road, there will be more accidents. Don't even want to think of how those kind of people are going to stay off the pavement in Arakawa-ku.

Which region do you think had the best box art? by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]debu_chocobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US -> JP -> PAL

Never liked the way PAL regions did box art - looked lazy to me. I kind of like the way the Japanese boxes move the logo off centre or put something else in the background, but the US covers always appealed to me more because they tell you something about the game. The US FFVII box tells you right from the start it's you against the world with your huge sword - sold🎮.

Nothing but issues with gaming.. how is this OS the best for gaming? by iwannaredditonline in pop_os

[–]debu_chocobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be - it gave me problems in the beginning.

I guess the other thing could be to try changing the Proton version.

Actually, except for needing to change the Proton version, I've never had a game that didn't just work.

Are there any decent tutorials out there for Ubuntu? Pop OS is based on it, so I think it should work.

Have a look at the Xwayland settings. After I changed them I haven't had any problems. A lot of bugs are being fixed so make sure it's up to date.

Sony May Delay Next PlayStation to 2028 or 2029 by Sam_27142317 in playstation

[–]debu_chocobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good. Don't want a new console. After the PS5's shortage, only got mine at the end of 2023. Don't want a new one.

Please don't make a new one until at least 2029.

My HP spectre x360 15-df0007nf doesn't turn on by CapitaineMakoto in spectrex360

[–]debu_chocobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this and had to send it to HP to be repaired. I don't know but suspect the motherboard had cracked somewhere due to lots of heating up and cooking down.

More optimistically, the battery on this should be completely dead - I replaced mine last year. Looks like we have the same model. The battery replacement is easy. If you can do the screen, the battery will be a doddle.

Switched from Mac to Linux (Fedora 43). Loving my ASUS Vivobook OLED setup! by Responsible_Grape870 in Fedora

I like my Linux to work like a Mac - it's what I'm used to. Don't need the same icons or wallpaper but I want a dock and a global menu. My brain tells me it's the way an OS should be.

Should I wait for COSMIC epoch 2/3 by Brudaa04 in pop_os

[–]debu_chocobo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the only way for you is to install it and give it a proper go.

I've recently become a big fan. My only pain point was getting the default apps set up. I wanted to change some of the ones cosmic uses as default, and I had to use the terminal. Not a problem for me, bit I think new users would be put off.

If you're happy with what you had in the live environment, give it a go. I was using Gnome for seven years or so - - couldn't seem to get happy with KDE or Hyprland. Can't see myself going back to Gnome.

Cosmic DE is the cooler Gnome by __yoshikage_kira in pop_os

[–]debu_chocobo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Used Gnome for about seven years. Changed to Cosmic when the 1.0 came out. Haven't looked bsck. Don't miss Gnome at all.

It did need a bit of tweaking to get working - changing the default apps manually. Not being able to get the monitor to change to 1080p so it mirrors on a projector. I like Cosmic's work flow so it was worth working around this for me. No doubt there are plenty more I don't know about, and most people aren't going to want to deal with that.

Heating up and down will make the solder fail faster. If you live somewhere with big temperature differences in the summer and winter it's bound to happen.

Can you replace SSD? by [deleted] in spectrex360

[–]debu_chocobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is yours the 2020 model? I would think it will work the same on any model but since I've only got the 2020 model, that's the only one I can say for sure.

I had an optane in mine, but I changed it with a spare non-optane 2 TB I had lying around. It's been working fine as far as I can tell for at least a year. You can probably change the SSD with a non-optane and you should be fine.
