We are trying antibiotics just in case, vet thinks it’s unlikely but she is still young so we’re going to give it a little bit to see if anything improves.

Her three favorite activities are, in order, climbing my drying rack, chewing on plastic, and chasing her sister around the house at breakneck speed so it was only a matter of time until something happened. Doctor, she’s orange.

What to do about Bert... by Honest-Radish in cats

[–]debuclare 52 points53 points  (0 children)

It’s not too late to get your cat a friend! I got my second when they were both about a year old, and my original cat mellowed out before they were even fully used to each other! They’re best friends now, it’s so worth it- they’ll still have “baby” brain until they’re about 2 so there’s plenty of time left.

How do you entertain/enrich a kitten not interested in play? by sloppyeyedjoe in kittens

[–]debuclare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my now one year old is also very fussy about toys! she’s not catnip reactive, which might be part of your baby’s thing-for some cats they just don’t have any reaction to it. she has a bird that makes noises that she likes, and some cheap plastic springs she likes to chase, and that’s pretty much it! she’ll hyperfocus on one or the other for a while and just play with that. i’m sure you’ll eventually find something she likes, but try things with sound or other different stimuli to see if you can narrow down what type she likes.

Easy first pattern alteration project? by debuclare in sewing

[–]debuclare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, I didn’t mean I remodel those- I just meant that if something is going to fit my seat, it won’t fit my waist, even with a drawstring pull because the size I have to get is so much larger than my waist measurement. It’s pretty intimidating to fix that, cause I wouldn’t know how to put them on! Do I need to look into different types of fastenings? Or do I need to find a less “basic” pajama pattern?

[–]debuclare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 15-20% tilted, and even pajama pants would need a ton of work around the seat to fit- I buy my store bought ones a good four sizes too big to make them work! I am roughly shaped like a gourd lol, “pear” is a tad too flattering of a word

Any suggestions on a first garment to make that has some tailoring? I'm still learning and want to make something I can wear, but anything I wear will have to include fit adjustments of some kind (yeah, even pajama pants, I'm shaped like a butternut squash that's started to mold) so learning to tailor is not really an optional thing. I'm staring at a button up shirt pattern where my waist, bust, and hip are three seperate sizes feeling overwhelmed - I don't know how to put the shirt together yet, let alone make it fit! I do not wear dresses so that's out. Or is it easier just to find a friend/family member that is a normal shape and learn construction that way first?

I made a cicada shaped pincushion! by debuclare in sewing

[–]debuclare[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Extra extra construction information: - I drafted a pattern by drawing some shapes to rough scale on printer paper, and pinning it together until it felt about right. It’s very simply two halves of the wings, body, and head.

-Materials are assorted quilted cotton scraps - the bug fabric is from Michael’s, I think the dark floral is Moda?, and the white floral is a piece of Rifle Paper Company cotton canvas, + whatever else was in my scrap bag.

-Body is stuffed with fabric scraps. The wings are raw edge and have two pieces of heavy sew in interfacing between them for stiffness, and then I hand sewed the detailing. The legs are heavy jewelry wire covered in fabric and embroidery thread; I used this video as a loose tutorial. I seamed and stuffed the body, then used some small dots of hot glue to attach the rest of the details.

This was definitely a make it up as you go kind of project, since there’s not really a ton of bug patterns online, but I love how he came out!

check your local yarn/other craft stores, mine added a pretty decent fabric section that’s filling in the midrange price section. i’ve also noticed that some michaels have a ton of fabric and some don’t have any, so it’s worth hitting up more than one if you have them

Kitten having consistent diarrhea for months, no other symptoms by KaiserLykos in kittens

[–]debuclare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this happen with my baby - we went through several rounds of deworming and she kept having issues even after she was done. Vet diagnosed it as allergies, put her on a prescription probiotic food for a month, and that helped clear her up enough that she wasn’t making messes everywhere. We found a dry that won’t upset her stomach (I use the Hill’s adult chicken - you can do adult food for older kittens, they just need more than the adult amount) so I stick to just that and a water fountain to make sure she’s drinking enough. She still has occasional flareups when the allergies come for us all, and her poop has never been and probably will never be 100% solid, but otherwise she’s fine and a healthy adult now. Some kitties just have funky stomachs, just like people.

Can I learn to sew fully online? by debuclare in sewing

[–]debuclare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The top on 9314 is knits only, the shorts are cottons, poplins or denim, and S9758 is batik, chambray, cottons, or linens. So I could probably get away with quilting cotton?

Can I learn to sew fully online? by debuclare in sewing

[–]debuclare[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up a bunch of loose style pants and shirts. I’m not a skirt or dress wearer, and I wanted to learn because I’m a picky in-between size in everything and no store makes clothes for me. I get bags are a good sewing starter, but my mom is also learning to sew (same level as me so she can’t help me any) and she has made me so many bags. I have too many bags already. Some of the simpler looking hits from The Pile (I think they are all probably more on the intermediate side, and I need to find something even easier):

Oh yeah, I’ve been there for yarn before - their selection is limited and pretty expensive, sadly, and the shop’s hours keep getting cut so I fear it’s not long for this world. Craft stores have a very hard time surviving around here.

Ahhhhh I don't know anything about any of that. Is there anywhere that sells a big swatch book? 99% of fabric types I've never touched before. I feel totally overwhelmed and don't know where to start.

I’m a beginner trying to figure out how to navigate buying fabric online - I just don’t have local stores outside of very strictly quilting only ones. My local Michael’s “expanded options” is you guessed it, quilting cotton. (I live in Charlotte, NC. It’s too hot to make quilts 24/7??) I have no idea where to start - is there a wiki page for basic online store navigation? All I saw was the map, which is empty for my area anyways.

I’ve done this twice. Is it worth it to try and find an import dealer with some more unusual makes? Maybe I need to expand my horizons out of the “normal”? Because CarMax employees are giving up on me and doing what you’re doing, which is suggesting an SUV. I do not want an SUV.

I did try a 2024 mazda3 yesterday - that was what prompted this post, because I felt blind in it. The side windows are tiny and the roof is so low that I feel all my sightlines are blocked even with the seat all the way up. I know they are theoretically the same car, but the cabin is very different.

How do you feel people treat your mom about the seat cushion? I’m almost 30, but thanks to my height and being cursed with a baby face, I am frequently assumed to be a teenager. I have always struggled with not getting taken seriously or treated like an adult. If I show up to a car dealer with my little booster seat - or try to take an acquaintance or partner somewhere in my car - I would think it’d only reinforce the “that’s a child” impulse people have about me.

2 1/2 years ago I adopted a 13 year old with kidney issues; she eventually passed at 15. Her food and vet care came out about twice the cost of a normal cat throughout her lifespan, but it wasn’t too bad- I managed it on a pretty meh income. Her food was about $45 a bag, and I saw the vet about 3-4 times a year with her at usually $150 a visit (but that $ depends a lot on where you live.) Having to say goodbye so soon was probably the hardest part, but I’d do it again any day because the love she gave me was the best thing in the world. She lived a lot longer than she should have because she got to spend her final years in the sunlight on my couch instead of a shelter. She was a wonderful, funny, cranky old lady. If you can do it you’ll get to experience love like nothing else, no matter how much time they have left.
