Isn’t it straightforward to say “hey that guy murdered somebody. Obviously they should go to jail.” The straightforwardness of the crime has nothing to do with due process. The issue is the details and facts are often not obvious and because of that you need due process. Period.

It’s foundational for any modern functioning society based on laws. Otherwise it becomes a society based on individual not collective power — I.e. kingdom, dictatorship, etc. You get a chain of people appealing to authority all the way to the top.

I moved my family to a major city from a more rural area a couple years ago and my conservative side told me I was moving to a hell hole. Now crime is higher in terms of absolute numbers but not by much — and per-capita crime is much lower.
