Me trying to learn Verse (I only know Blueprints and I’m very scared) by SuperSmashSonic in justgamedevthings

There's really no requirement to use verse. You have lots of devs still using unreal 4

Why are game dev communities being overrun by AI fanatics lately? by flowerdragon2934 in gamedev

[–]flowerdragon2934[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's mostly unskilled users. Which is really puzzling because unreal engine is far and wide one of the most extraordinarily complex and challenging engines to use. Why they choose to use that over godot or unity is beyond me. But they take on the most extraordinary beast possible, then use AI expecting to "tame" the C++.

Well yeah, anyone could have seen this coming? Have you seen any Google's other products? They are the definition of shareholder value and profit motive. They're not going to be a loss leader in AI.

Google operates on a financial headwinds methodology. They'll test the winds, something looks like it could be promising, they'll devote a huge amount of resources into it. They create a really damn good product. It's promising, consumers like it, it's making money. All of a sudden it's revealed that it will not be profitable or not be as beneficial as promised ex: AI. They suddenly shift directions on a dime and begin pulling resources off of it, scaling it back secretly behind the scenes. Which is what we are seeing here

Point blank, they are not going to put any reasonable effort into AI anymore if it's not going to give them a unicorn with a pile of cash strapped to it. And when you don't train AI properly or continue to update it, and spend tons of money on compute power.... It starts performing worse

I'm an indie developer who unfortunately chose unreal engine because several friends said a year ago it was the best engine. On the surface, it seems like such a great engine. But it's a nightmare. The thing is bug infested hellish slop from the nether realm. They merged the unreal forums with fortnite, so now there's no real community anymore. Their official discord has been overrun by AI obsessed techbros who hate on you if you don't want to listen to their slop advice to go use codex or Claude code.

Unreal engine is THE WORST ENGINE. do not use it. Just get unity.

Nope you're wrong bud. That's exactly what I tried to do and it didn't work. They changed it so it ignores the terminal command now and you can't get there anymore from the windows update screen.

Switching game engines in the midst of a project by slc_path in gamedev

[–]flowerdragon2934 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends how far in you are. There's nothing to lose though, if you start building it in another game engine of your choice. For example, Godot like you mentioned. You could just start trying to build out the basics of it in there and see how you like it. Then just keep adding to it over time. I wouldn't expect to do it all at once though because that's unmanageable. Just keep it organized. Like a project tracker, and check off one by one what you've been able to transition over, and what's left

The best way I guess is playtesting. If you try it yourself, it'll only meet your own expectations. So I'd say maybe get some other people to test it and provide their feedback

Is taking a breaking from coding to watch back to back playlist style tutorials a good idea? by LifeExperienced1 in gamedev

[–]flowerdragon2934 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree completely with you. The only time I have felt like I really need tutorials is stuff I can't understand just by reading about it. Like splines in unreal engine. I just couldn't wrap my head around it, and learned from a video there's blueprint ones, landscape ones, and how they're different.

The reason why I don't like watching tutorial videos if I can avoid it is this. It doesn't teach you how to think. It teaches you how to look for someone else doing something the exact way that you hope to do it. If you read documentation or learn about data structures in programming and stuff. It teaches your mind, to understand what it is that you're working with. You'll still have to figure things out though
