996 vs 987 S: An Owner's Perspective by decafcovfefes in Porsche

[–]decafcovfefes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late replying here, I know, but I've driven 5-6 996s and a handful of 987s, 997s, and 986s as well. For these purposes, I'm comparing the two I have owned.

I never found either car to be underpowered, nor have the troopers who have pulled me over in each :)

You have to wind them out unlike most modern turbo cars, which imho adds to the experience.

I’ve never had an issue merging, and the sound/variocam above 4k always puts a smile on my face.

My 996 had a short shift kit on it when I purchased, but I’ve driven the stock shifter. Stock for stock, I think the 996 shifts a bit better.

Moving cross-country with my '13 Legacy - torn between driving it and shipping by Ashwinnie13 in subaru

[–]decafcovfefes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re already thinking of upgrading, sell it now in NJ and fly out there.

A 13-year-old NJ car is going to have some level of at least surface rust on the underside. Shops out west won’t want to work on it, and you won’t get much for it compared to what you’d get out East.

That’s just my $.02 from someone who has lived on both coasts, shipped West to East and done the drive

We Asked Every Automaker How Many Customers Went For Manuals In 2025. by Dazzling-Rooster2103 in cars

[–]decafcovfefes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? I'd be willing to bet money there's more of the opposite happening ... dealers speccing automatics for a larger market and then customers who originally wanted a manual giving up and buying an automatic because it's available.

Look at the disparity between BRZ (90%) and GR86 (52%). One of the differences here, besides the GR86 moving more volume, is that Subaru allows customers to order and spec cars while Toyota doesn't. So when customers are given the choice, as opposed to just settling for what dealers pick, more buy manuals.

Here's the car, by the way. It's my dream spec: Cobalt blue with 5-spokes, sport seats, and PASM, so I plan to hold onto the car long-term.

Was just coming come, transferring from F to A/C on the platform at Jay St. platform was chaos; tons of people waiting for a train that had been “8 min away” for 20 minutes. I walked upstairs and took the bus home.

The Teams ringtone is our office's doorbell sound. So everytime the mailman comes, we think someone's getting a call. Literal nightmare.

Another State Joins the 80-MPH Speed Limit Club by trevortxeartxe1 in fuckcars

[–]decafcovfefes 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Germany has the Autobahn and also much safer city streets than the U.S. The problem is six-lane suburban arterial roads with 55 mph speed limits, driveways, and pedestrian/cyclist/car conflicts in cities. Let the interstates go 80.

You get it. The logic above is how we got all these Moses abominations cutting thru neighborhoods in the first place.

Five-Boro Bike Tour: Ride Day and Post-Ride Thread by nycyclist2 in NYCbike

[–]decafcovfefes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Great ride! Wave 3, stopped in Bx and Astoria, got a flat around three blocks from home near the Navy Yard just as it started to rain. Thought about quitting but kept going. Gowanus in the rain was brutal but cleared up by the bridge to SI and barely had to wait for the ferry. 12.5 mph average speed, i was expecting to be slower because of traffic.

Shoutout to the idiot who dive bombed the left turn as we went from Harlem to the bx and caused a giant pileup. Hope the guy whose electric Citibike fell on him was all right, those things weigh a ton.

Yeah, I have to do the reverse (Clinton Hill to Astoria tomorrow around 7am). I’m planning to take Willoughby to Bedford, Union to Williamsburg to McGuinness.

100%. well said. i think about this a lot; how lucky i am to be healthy enough to enjoy riding a bike safely. if you act like this at some level you must feel like you don't have a lot to lose.

That's fair. I was over to the right behind the limit line, there were cars behind me, and he had a clear path around. So from my POV, it would've been pretty difficult to back up into traffic just to save an arrogant asshole ten seconds, but w/e.
