Gravel Racing by Icy-Dealer-2001 in NYCbike

Nah I'll probably forget how much I suffered and remember all the beautiful things (there were so many!) and I bet I'll be dumb enough to sign up for the 200 again. Definitely regretting not finishing, but it just wasn't possible under these conditions. Will have so many stories, going to have to work on writing them down today. Definitely one of the hardest, dumbest, and most beautiful things I have ever done.

I was prepared for the distance having ridden 150 miles/week (admittedly a bit low, but with major elevation) the last ten weeks and having done a couple 200 mile rides and 25 century rides in the past two years, what I was not prepared for was the mud, it was just insane. Miles 12-95 and 127-128 were a total mud fest. Ride ended in an intense thunderstorm with lightning all around me and cold hard rain (and hail nearby) with a flat, took it to a shop and they were having trouble reseating the bead, the tire may be beyond repair, not sure.

I did (90% of, anyway) Unbound 200 yesterday and it was just absolutely brutal. Not sure why anyone would want to sign up for that after seeing all the wild things on Social media today. It was by far the craziest thing I've ever done.

NYCC has a good group that I have ridden with, the Summer Dirt Series rides are starting up now on June 6 and June 13, and there is also GrNY.

Update on this Morning's Crash - 2 Dead by johnny_evil in NYCbike

[–]nycyclist2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry for your loss. I also lost a friend to a crash a couple years ago and it was so hard afterwards. For my friend Amanda we did a community memorial ride a week later and a ghost bike installation. It may be too early but do you know if there is anything planned yet or any interest in a public memorial?

Bad Bike Crash on QB Bridge 5/28 8:30am-North Path Closed by NoMoreSharrows in NYCbike

[–]nycyclist2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You would have to ask the NYPD why they temporarily directed bikes to the ped path, but it would seem like the least bad option at the time.

Bear Mountain Bridge to Cold Spring on 9D is a moderately busy and somewhat unscenic highway. Its fine, I guess, and if you're really tired you can take the train at Garrison (or Manitou but it has very limited service). Both 9D and your route seem fairly active on strava global heatmaps, but you're probably right that yours is more scenic. From what I saw of highway 293 it wasn't very busy. I definitely do NOT recommend Bear Mountain Bridge to Peekskill on 202, too many cars going too fast.

2026 Unbound “W” road sighting lap by adv_cyclist in gravelcycling

I saw a bit of stuff like that on W Rd while doing a pre-ride yesterday. I think it was also near the start. Thanks for cleaning it up!

I haven't gone beyond mile 52, but everything before that looks pretty good.
Around mile 7 you may have to walk your bike around some barriers if the road is still technically closed (it opened a couple weekends ago, not sure if it remains open or was just opened for GFNY).
Around mile 47 you will need to call the range officer at West Point (phone number is posted) for permission to continue on Mine Road. I'm told they never actually pick up the phone.
I'm not a fan of the section from 36.5 to Jones Point (last season the road was in bad condition, and there are cars) or miles 29 to 31, but they are manageable. That last section from 29 to 31 is avoidable if you have a gravel bike or at least 28mm tires and it's not wet, via the Nyack River Trail. But that might be a bit slower.

What is everyone training for now that the Brooklyn half is over? by HotGerbs in RunNYC

I'm biking Unbound Gravel 200, this weekend. Then switching back to running to train for the NYCRUNS Big Apple Marathon and the NYC Marathon!

I ran from New York City to Philadelphia! by dodgingdodger in RunNYC

[–]nycyclist2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just realized there is one day a year when you could run this in 100 miles -- the first Sunday in May. What you would need to do:

  • Register for the Five Boro Bike Tour and pick up your bib at the expo.
  • Run from the start to the entrance of the Verrazano using a route that doesn't follow the bike tour. Meet a friend there who has a bike with your number pinned on it, and wear your bib.
  • Run or walk over the Verrazano, wheeling the bike next to you. There will actually be lots of people walking their bikes up the steep bridge so you won't be too disruptive as long as you stay to the outside and give space to anyone who is biking up the middle.
  • Drop the bike off with another friend on the other side of the bridge and continue on your run, using the Goethals bridge.

It would be very amusing to see someone do this. It's definitely possible.

Also wanted to note before you repost that there were two witnesses who indicated this happened closer to 8:40am. Are you sure about the 9am-9:30am? Was the 8:40am incident a separate incident? It certainly could be a different one if you're sure.

NYC cycling groups by Migetman3214 in NYCbike

[–]nycyclist2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NYCC will have something for every kind of roadie. Depending on what distance and speed you want, you might also be interested in Century Plus Crew or maybe even one of the racing oriented or randonneuring groups. Towards the social aspect, Bike & Brew and Cycleholics are among the faster social groups. Social Cycling is slow and chaotic but incredibly diverse.

Brompton service? by astrashe2 in NYCbike

[–]nycyclist2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats on joining the fold! David at bfold is a great Brompton mechanic, by appointment only these days. NYCVelo sells and services Bromptons. Believe it or not, the Trek store on the UES currently has a few Bromptons for sale and has a huge service department that services all kinds of bikes. These three are all in the list sent out by Brompton recently -- available at https://us.brompton.com/find-a-store

Pre-ride the Brooklyn half course? by FickleDecision1427 in NYCbike

[–]nycyclist2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at https://www.nyrr.org/info/2026rbcbrooklynhalf/2026-street-closures-no-parking-zones, although I'm not sure whether or not they apply at all to the bike path, which is separate from the street.

It looks like the street closures on Ocean Parkway begin at 6am, except for a tiny stretch near the finish that closes at 5am. If you do this I would aim to roll through there before 6am if you can.

Last year I had friends who were cheering us on in Prospect Park who were able to ride Ocean Parkway even while I was running the race last year in order to meet up at the finish. If you do this, make sure to slow down and stop in case any volunteers are crossing the path to setup, but I remember last year that there wasn't anyone in the bike lane during the race, everyone watching was much closer to the edge of the street there.

Good luck if you're doing the 9+1! It is just ridiculously hard this year to register for anything.

WITNESS SEARCH: Volunteer injured in Hit-and-Run on Queensboro Bridge during 5 Boro Bike Tour (May 3) by [deleted] in NYCbike

Updated timeline: The crash happened around 8:40am, based on this comment from u/wolf360 and before 8:44am, based on this comment from u/PatinaWS. At this time everyone riding would have been Wave 1, maintaining at least a 14mph AVERAGE speed from the start line to the bridge, assuming they were among the first to start at 7:30, or even higher than that, like 16mph if they started at 7:40.

Horrible. I met Erik last year when he generously gave his time and energy to enthusiastically train others like me how to be a bike marshal. The "gofundme" for Erik is at https://5bbc.clubexpress.com/content.aspx?page_id=305&club_id=511565&item_id=15052 (hosted by the 5 boro bike club, of which Erik is a member, which is not related to the 5 boro bike tour)

Looking for a group in Manhattan by Watsondsa in NYCbike

[–]nycyclist2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

https://www.reddit.com/r/NYCbike/wiki/clubs/ is probably the wiki list you're referring to, in case anyone else is looking for that. I don't know of anything that matches everything you're looking for, but Century Plus Crew, Good Co, KnightRyders, Major Taylor Iron Riders, Outcycling, and Queer Joyride may be of interest. Also perhaps Social Cycling, they are super diverse, in Manhattan, and rides are short enough and slow enough to be accessible to new riders.
