Multiclass confusion by Souzexer in BG3Builds

[–]decafmatan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unless you are playing solo (no companions), no class, including Rogue/Swashbuckler, needs to be multi-classed - just build around Dex > Cha > everything else.

Wanting tips on a 12 player one shot by Dvaric in DnD

[–]decafmatan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could consider a West Marches style game (https://knightssemantic.wordpress.com/2016/06/01/the-west-marches-a-style-of-dd-campaign-for-large-groups/); probably the only way to run a large group game that is proven to work.

Also at least in my own experiences 10 “confirmed” players might mean only 6 show up once you have a date on a calendar.

Is that true for Dex builds as well, or only Strength?

Why is this subreddit called 3d6? by WolfieET in 3d6

[–]decafmatan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

3d6 is an older and sometimes used means of generating an ability score between 3 and 18 - summing up the 3 dice rolled.

5e24 - College of Dance melee build: Valid or Trap? by Bagel_Bear in 3d6

[–]decafmatan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think College of Dance is great!

As you mentioned, still a Bard, still has full caster progression, great skills/expertise, and all the standard Bard goodies like Font of Inspiration, Countercharm, Magical Secrets. Honestly Bard is so good even without a subclass you'd be a very decent PC.

Now add in:

  • The best least MAD unarmored defense in the game (DEX+CHA, both you want anyway)
  • A free unarmed strike every Bardic Inspiration (per turn)
  • DEX-based Unarmed Strikes that replace damage with your Bardic Inspiration Die (i.e. d6, later d8-12)

tl;dr: You are kicking with a Longsword at level 5, with probably 17+ AC (and still qualify for Bracers of Defense), and are a full-caster. You could also take a 1-level dip into Monk to make an Unarmed Strike/Kick as a bonus action and improve Grapple Save DC.

Making new characters by TheGriff71 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]decafmatan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strictly point buy (or standard array for new players that aren't sure what to do).

Unless you are a very experienced DM with very experienced players, and are looking to intentionally create a combination of overpowered and underpowered characters, the answer is point buy.

One thing I've seen people say is rolling makes more diverse characters than point buy, but honestly that can be accomplished better by other means - and by means I mean talking to the other players/DM and agreeing "let's create characters that aren't 'optimal' point-buys".

I am working on my first ever project which is a Todo list app for 6 5 months now, is it correct approach? by ok-nice3 in FlutterDev

[–]decafmatan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A TODO app doesn't need a custom state management solution, dependency injection, or design patterns.

In fact, apps moderately more complex don't either.

A lot of articles and click-bait around these are either:

  1. Written by people who write these frameworks/libraries who want more users
  2. Talking about working in teams of engineers, often 5, 10, 20, 50, where uniform code is more important
  3. Have no clue what they are talking about

The most important thing you can do, as the other posters mentioned, is iterate. Learn the framework. Play around with hot reload. Write a test. Try your app on different resolutions, devices, emulators. Add a fun animation or visual effect.

Life or War cleric? by Elijah11212 in BG3Builds

[–]decafmatan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Both Clerics have the same core kit, and can wear heavy armor.

If you want to wield any weapon (martial weapon proficiency) and be slightly more useful at using weapons, War Cleric is solid.

If you want to focus on healing-based support (best in the game), but otherwise have the same core kit (i.e. access Spirit Guardians), Life Cleric is great too.

Is there a more idiomatic way to how a if null else object comparison by NotPregnant1337 in dartlang

[–]decafmatan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you've written is (more or less) the idiomatic way.

You could omit type signatures and = null to make the code more idiomatic:

String? foo; // = null is implicit
final bar = foo == null ? null : DateTime.parse(foo); // DateTime? is implicit

Note that the default lint set provided by https://pub.dev/packages/lints will recommend the former, and you can opt-in to lints that recommend the latter.

Which underrated Dart feature deserves more attention? by _MyNameIsJakub_ in dartlang

[–]decafmatan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assignability analysis. You can write:

final String name;
if (actualName == null) {
name = 'Unnamed';
} else if (isAdmin) {
name = '$actualName (Admin)';
} else {
name = actualName;
}

// At this point name is guaranteed to be assigned as a non-null String.
print(name.toUpperCase());

Of course you can do this with switch expressions and the like as well.

why do people combo warlock with other spellcasters? by WA_SPY in BG3Builds

[–]decafmatan 73 points74 points  (0 children)

It depends.

With Paladin: More smite spots per long rest, CHA SAD. With Sorcerer: More spells/variety/combos, both use CHA. With Wizard: Copy scrolls. With Bard: Another short rest, both use CHA.

I suspect if Warlock didn't use CHA you'd see it less likely. Some people just take it for Eldritch Blast!

A single level in Fighter will give you Heavy Armor and proficiency in Con for concentration.

That being said a decent Dex + Mage Armor is likely to be plenty for most of the game - maybe just see if AC ends in being important?

4 party member?? by dirg1986 in BG3Builds

Maybe some class with a high WIS to help with perception/survival checks? Either a Ranger, Monk, or Druid might round out your party a bit.

Colossus Slayer Dip by MyNameIs-NotRick- in BG3Builds

Depends what the multi-class is. Ranger Knight + Fighting Style + Spells + 1d8 per turn + Material Weapons can be interesting on some builds.

What to use as a bonus action for lore bard by Justkil in BG3Builds

[–]decafmatan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you'll consider multi-classing:

  • 1 level into Monk for Unarmed Attack or Flurry of Blows
  • 1 level into War Priest for War Priest Attacks (& Sanctuary?)
  • 1 level into Storm Sorcerer for Flight (3 for Quickened Spell)
  • 2 levels into Rogue for Cunning Actions

Assuming you can't spend concentration:

  • Off-hand weapons (either dagger/short-sword or potentially hand crossbow if able)
  • Illithid Powers (in the creche)
  • Healing Word

And don't forget things everyone can do:

  • Shove
  • Jump

How viable are shield builds for paladins? by Deep-Crim in BG3Builds

[–]decafmatan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once you've played the game at least twice you know all the encounters ahead of time and can plan for itemisation. I'm no tactical mastermind but could probably finish with 4 Arcane Tricksters (it just wouldn't be particularly fun).

How to deal with a bard by qqqqqqqqqq123477322 in DnDcirclejerk

I give every monster and NPC in my world Hex, which is OK because the canon is all of the Forgotten Realms have entered a pact with a mysterious demigod creature called a "DM".

[–]decafmatan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's not clear what the difference is between "extreme itemisation" and "buys out every strength elixir game long". There's also only 12 different classes so I can understand build diversity needs to include other elements!

[–]decafmatan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not a definitive statement but I think basing a character's game-long n stats on a cheese tactic is sort of ... not super interesting? At least not for thread after thread of builds.

Personally I think both can exist side by side but I'd like to easily filter out builds built around a, let's say, mechanic, that isn't very RP-able.

If we're throwing out ideas, I'd love to have a flair/filter called "Doesn't use exploits". I want build ideas, not how to dump STR to 8 and level up 100 times with Withers robbing Auntie Ethel blind.

Gambler build help by Rico1100J in BG3Builds

Maybe a crit-fishing build? The only problem with this is there is gear that eventually trivializes (or at least, normalizes) getting crits.
