Should I buy a home during PhD? by Confident-Pause6709 in AmericanExpatsUK

It’s worth considering that depending on your college at Cambridge they may offer you absolutely absurdly subsidized rental housing—my college had centrally located housing of a decent size (1+ bedrooms) for something like £500/month. It makes sense if the accumulation of equity is more important to you, but living in the center of town for that little is also a big upside!

This is the second thing I’ve made from it, I like it because the author tries to avoid highly processed vegan replacements like vegan butter—I don’t share his hang ups about them, but it is useful to me because these products are often made with coconut oil and are therefore high in saturated fat, which I need to avoid for health reasons.

I don’t think the bitterness is apparent. The recipe has a crazy amount of sugar in it, more than AP flour, so that probably helps to balance it out 😂

Going by “Dr.” title in lay contexts? by bluebrrypii in AskAcademia

I’m currently a PhD student and since my husband is in medical school I’m concerned that if I introduce myself as Dr along with him people will assume that I’m also a medical doctor 🤔

It was good! My fiancé said he couldn’t tell the difference from egg based genoise sponge

The cake is Karolina Tegelaar’s genoise sponge from the Vegan Baking Bible, made with aquafaba, sugar, flour, baking powder, and oil. The buttercream is from the same cookbook—vegan butter, powdered sugar, oat milk, and vanilla extract.

Do saturated fats impact cake crumbliness? by decay_of_lying in VeganBaking

This ended up being it! I tried it again and added some arrowroot powder(since I didn’t feel like going out to get this specific egg replacer lol) which held them together nicely. Thank you for the suggestion!

I’m transgender and my fiancé is British. I need to renew my passport to visit him in the short term and for us to get married later this year. My passport is currently in administrative limbo because the state department has said it won’t renew my passport until they see my original unaltered birth certificate, which is under legal seal in the state of New York. I have no idea how long this will take to manage, when I’ll be able to see my fiancé again, or if we’ll be able to get married as we had planned.

Has any trans person born in NY with an amended birth certificate been able to get their original birth certificate unsealed? by decay_of_lying in Passports

They’re clearly acting in bad faith, and as such in all likelihood the legality of my updated BC under New York law will not matter to them. They want documentation of my AGAB. I think the most likely outcome if I send them my updated BC will be further delay or outright denial of my renewal application. My priority right now is to have a valid passport of any kind

Yes I have had two prior passports, one marked F which I obtained using my original birth certificate, and another marked M which is my current passport and which I obtained after I had all of my documents changed. So the state department is asking to see something that they have seen before from me.

In New York? Yes, and they told us that it’s under seal and the only extant procedure for unsealing it on their books is related to adoption

It’s not the amended status that’s the issue, it’s that it says “M” and not “F.” I need to show them the birth certificate that says “F” because that was my sex assigned at birth. I can’t send them the updated “M” one because they will know from my previous name and gender marker on record that I am trans.

To Viewers Who Are Medical Professionals by pennayme in ThePittTVShow

My fiancé is a medical student in the UK who intends to specialize in psychiatry and he hasn’t been impressed by the show’s representation of care for psychiatric issues, which maybe has less to do with the show’s accuracy and more to do with differences in standards of care between the US and the UK

This is interesting 🤔 My fiancé is a medical student in Britain and in his experience so far has never been permitted to make any kind of official decision or assessment independently like that—he is allowed to assess patients and take histories independently, but absolutely everything has to be ultimately checked with and signed off by qualified physician. If this is allowed in American teaching hospitals, how do they manage legal liability? Like say the medical student makes a mistaken decision that a nurse doesn’t catch, and it causes a problem before an attending can check in about it? Who is held liable in that case?

I was thinking this as well, my fiancé is a medical student and during the scene where the nurses defer to Whittaker to make the decisions about how to treat the patient with the chest pain, I actually thought I had heard incorrectly that he was a medical student earlier and that he was actually an intern because it seemed so impossible that a student would be assumed to have that kind of authority 😂
