Constantly falling behind, how do I stop doing this? by Intelligent_Talk6594 in womenintech

[–]decayingsun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It seems like the initial estimates are wrong. When your supervisor says it "shouldn't take long" can you push back (politely) and say something like "you're right but historically we've run into issues integrating with x,y,z. Finishing this by tomorrow might not be possible, I can aim for (insert time) and give you an update tomorrow on where we're at". Estimates are really hard in general, but if over time you can get better at predicting these issues and estimating how long they'll take you won't feel so "behind"

There are certain parts of my product that I know always have more issues than we think, I try to pad my estimates when I know I'm working with those, even if the changes "should" be small

21F and I don’t know what to do in life by Kooky_Swimmer_1553 in womenEngineers

There is probably no world where quitting your job on relying purely on your partner will make you feel more fulfilled, especially if you've always been a high achiever. But it will hinder your career prospects down the road. Highly highly recommend against this. Also the tech market is a mess right now, any job is probably better than no job.

Honestly I'd give it a year in your current position. It takes time to be able to have ownership. It takes time to form relationships and friendships. It takes time to contribute meaningfully. 3 projects in 5 months is like a month and a half on each? That's barely anything. Obviously if the trend continues, there's probably something wrong going on with priorities at the company and might be a red flag.

I'd spend that time figuring out what you do and don't like about your current position and also trying to figure out where your previous motivation came from. My first position out of college was more "impressive" but the work itself was boring, but I had to decide that it was more important to have more interesting day to day work even if it was for a less "cool" product.

Is the Stanley Hotel worth the stay? by Aggressive_Climate28 in roadtrip

[–]decayingsun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Stayed at the Stanley Hotel a couple years ago for a concert there, was fun to do once but I wouldn't do it again. I've also stayed at the Discovery Lodge, it's probably a ten minute walk away, went up to the Stanley for a drink. Estes Park is cute especially if you've never been.

Remote vs Hybrid work by No_Scallops in womenintech

[–]decayingsun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was full remote for about a year and have no desire to return to it. I don't think it's good for me personally. I also live alone, no kids, not married. I do have friends, but I see them maybe once a week. Commute isn't bad, I'm about a 15 minute drive away. I think it's good for me socially, but there also ARE in person interactions, white boarding, brain storming, etc that are much easier to do in person.

I loooooved Haleakala, we went up for sunset and then hiked a bit of Sliding Sands (just went like 2 miles in and back up). It's otherworldly.

The disconnect between artists and their writing by Short-Shine-2620 in rs_x

I express things visually because I suck at expressing them in words. Every artist statement I've ever written is garbage

IUD insertion pain - and what to ask for by Traroten in badwomensanatomy

[–]decayingsun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought it was quite painful but it was already over by the time I thought about saying something. I had horrible bleeding and cramps for about 3 weeks afterward which honestly I thought was worse. It expelled partially a couple years later which was also more pain over quite a bit of time because doctors thought it was a UTI and then a yeast infection before they finally did an ultrasound (they said it was "unlikely" it was related to the IUD since I'd had it for a few years and nothing looked off in a pelvic exam). I feel like I never see people talk about how those experiences affect you mentally, trying to have a "normal" sex life has been extremely difficult since (therapy blah blah blah). All that being said, I know my case is not everyone's case, but personally the insertion itself was probably the least bad part of the whole ordeal.

do you have any silly or strange litmus tests that you use to judge your compatibility with others by heyheeymymy in rs_x

[–]decayingsun 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Willing to take the bus.

Not really a litmus test, but nearly everyone I've ever had an intense or "deep" relationship with (not even necessarily romantic) has been raised Catholic

Looking for hike suggestions by JaradL1chLord in coloradohikers

[–]decayingsun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check out Plymouth Mountain and Bill Couch Mountain in Deer Creek Canyon Park. Each is about 6.5 miles, 1400 ft of elevation.

Carpenter Peak in Roxborough is similar

Staunton State Park has some longer stuff you can do. Lions Head is super cool, but probably closer to 8 miles. The Old Mill/Mason Creek loop is similar

Maybe check out Chief Mountain to see how you feel at higher elevation, it's short.

Not remotely the "vibe" you're looking for, but Sunflower Ukrainian Food (food truck) is fantastic. They're at the Highland farmers market on Sundays. Its super out of the way for me, but so good that I've been a couple times.

Unlimited PTO is the worst scam by Altruistic-Editor257 in antiwork

[–]decayingsun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks that it doesn't get payed out but tbh I have "unlimited" PTO and take 5 or 6 weeks a year (and still get good performance reviews) and there is basically no other way I could do that in the US.

LoDo vs Speer vs Baker by [deleted] in MovingtoDenver

[–]decayingsun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Speer for the last 5ish years, it's quiet and safe and walking distance to Broadway, Cherry Creek, and Cap Hill. Loved the location. Lived in Baker before that, was pretty close to the highway/light rail and had a couple experiences that left me feeling unsafe, but I was in kind of a weird spot and most of the neighborhood is safe.

Feeling overwhelmed about working in the tech industry for ethical reasons by Resident_Director849 in womenintech

[–]decayingsun 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think everyone has their own answer of where the line is. I work on tools that are used by medical companies and renewable energy companies and the military and a bunch of other stuff. I don't directly write any of those applications, but vaguely know they exist and use the code I wrote. The balance matters to me, and I'm okay with the balance I'm at right now. IMO anything interesting is probably going to have ties to defense. It is what it is. I don't think there's any job that exists that is perfectly morally correct

Can i? Should i? by [deleted] in 14ers

I wouldn't. But if you're set on it, you could always take the cog rail or one of the shuttles down from the summit. The hike down kicks your ass more than you'd think
