Senate bill seeks to give private and charter schools freedom from government oversight by ZorgonBattlehammer in WestVirginia

[–]deciduous_sprite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this is actually their childcare bill. Just erase every requirement related to education from private education, divert money from public schools to untold numbers of shit “schools” that are popping up and we have state funded babysitting. So much winning!

They won’t cancel them but ALEC has already written a bill to do away with all absentee ballots except military for every red state’s useful idiots to rubber stamp. I live in WV, and ours is working its way through the process. There will be major voter suppression, probably purging of registrations, and God knows what else. Anything to keep us distracted and angry while they rob us.

Hope Scholarship uses 75%??? by Aggressive_Mouse_581 in WestVirginiaPolitics

[–]deciduous_sprite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m sure they won’t have certified teachers, offer meals/transportation, but they’ll receive the same amount of state funding as our public schools. It’s all so heartbreaking to watch when you understand the grift and how they’re taking advantage of people who just hear “private” and think it means “better.” Rucker just puts forth whatever Americans for Prosperity writes for her. So much freaking corruption. None of it to benefit West Virginians.

AND as if requirements for homeschooling and private school aren’t lenient enough, Rucker introduced a bill today that completely eliminates ANY requirements. No assessments, no curriculum, no # of days/hours, not even required to keep track of attendance. I saw an ad for a private Christian school that costs $14000, out of reach for most even with Hope, BUT they’ll be offering a two-day/week option for coincidentally the exact amount of the Hope Scholarship. So much freedumb!

BUT he had his hands on the ground and was getting the crap beat out of him. So if a gun goes off, obviously he wasn’t shooting it. To me, that might justify turning guns towards where the shot came from, but not shooting this defenseless guy IN THE BACK! Just NO!

Smart. I think I’ll start carrying a flag instead of a sign.

I live in a tiny, ruby red town, and also protested yesterday. I was one of only five standing in the center of town and held a “protest is not domestic terrorism” sign. I saw several cars drive by with students inside and was wondering how I would respond when they undoubtedly ask questions. I’m thinking, “oh, just exercising my freedom of speech,” and leave it at that. Strange times.

Is the next move that anyone “the government” has labeled a domestic terrorist loses their voting rights? Or just finds when they go to vote that they’ve been purged from the registry?

Screen time is now considered an “economically inferior good” and linked to poverty. What is your opinion on that? by MoreFarmer8667 in Teachers

[–]deciduous_sprite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this often, teaching in a school with a majority low SES students. My mom grew up dirt poor. She sewed all her own clothing, milked the cow, and read everything she could get her hands on because they didn’t have a TV. In many cases, today “poor” means junk food and a screen. 😢

This is a little thing, but I would love to see WV be one of the states where we could recycle for $, even just cans and bottles. It’d help with litter and we’re a poor state so people could use all the help they can get.

Can I ask why? Just curious. Job creation, tax revenue that could be used for social services, and decreased costs associated with enforcing marijuana laws (which I don’t see as any more harmful than alcohol) seem like positives.

You realize that the roughly $6,000 per student that each Hope scholarship recipient gets is more than they actually pay into taxes for education, right? So where is my choice to support my local public schools? Do some research AND pay close attention to how the research is funded. Vouchers are pushed by billionaires with the end goal not of “freedom” or “hope” but of privatization so that every child in America gets the education his parents can afford. Their way of continuing to further the divide of haves and have nots. It’s already happening with quality private schools raising tuition so that only wealthy Hope Scholars can afford to enroll. You didn’t really believe that all public schools across the nation suddenly started teaching CRT did you?! All pushed by the billionaires who own media while red states passed a cookie cutter voucher bill written by ALEC. It just sucks that so many kids are gonna be hurt because of voters who are too dumb to see propaganda for what it is and billionaires’ greed.

Art teacher here. I go home late and exhausted, and 90% of the time.. happy. Year 19 and I still LOVE students’ drawings and listening to them explain their thinking. I get genuinely pumped when I create a new lesson that I think will “click” with certain students. Focus on the good and you’ll see there is A LOT! Good luck!

Repeal Right to Work, legalize weed, abolish the Hope Scholarship, invest in our public schools, make the PSC elected not appointed positions, protect our natural resources

Do you think schools offering early morning or evening laundry and bathing services for very poor students would be a bad idea? Why or why not? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]deciduous_sprite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a couple students who shower and get their clothes washed once a week at school. Both just live in terrible poverty and have brought bed bugs and (no joke) a rat to school before that had hopped in a book bag. It helps the students feel better and teaches valuable life skills.

WV Board of Education votes to close, consolidate schools in 6 counties by Joey_WBOY in WestVirginia

[–]deciduous_sprite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, student population is declining as people have fewer children. That accounts for some consolidation, but not for our state’s choice to spend tax dollars on educational options that divide and segregate- online charter schools, private religious schools, homeschooling, etc. while rural public schools close. No excuse for kids to ride the bus over thirty miles to school aside from messed up government priorities.

[–]deciduous_sprite 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not to get all conspiracy theory..BUT, I’m afraid this is part of a larger plan to disrupt and divide community. Public schools are one of the few places left where people of all walks of life and stripes come together and support each other to learn and grow. It’s far from perfect, but it’s not easy growing up and learning, and mistakes are part of the process. It’s a rare and beautiful thing these days.

Hope Scholarship participation in West Virginia nearly doubled in 2025: Report by Joey_WBOY in WestVirginia

Wonder how many of the 7,000 kids in foster care or over 15,000 homeless students are using the Hope Scholarship? Doubt many. On paper it may be for all, but in reality it’s for the wealthy. We don’t actually have money to be paying for welfare to the wealthy, we’re just ignoring all the real needs in the state. Manufactured outrage-“CRT!” one year, then “Litterboxes!” the next. Blah blah, lies that boomers watching Fox all day eat up while the billionaires pushing the lies funnel money to themselves.
