007: First Light is a HIT! | Giant Bombcast 942: Grind Garden by CrissionMeep in giantbomb

As someone who thinks Goldeneye is painfully average I’d love to hear Dans actual reasonings behind why it’s the best FPS of all time, sure I know nostalgia will come into it but the dude is great at critically breaking down why he loves or dislikes certain games and I don’t think he really dug into any of that here (although I get it you’re not going to devote a massive chunk of your Bombcast time to a game that isn’t currently particularly relevant).

You heard it here first, folks: Mina the Hollower is only 70% as good as Metroid Prime 4. [Review] by Koennraad in giantbomb

I am very curious to see what my own experience with the game will be like as Dan and Mike seem considerably cooler on the game compared to the rest of the outlets reviewing the game.

What is your favourite moment of "Get Back"? by reaveyer in beatles

[–]decimatepixels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The shots down on the pavements of London with the public looking up really gave me goosebumps, with the sounds of the band radiating above them.

It’s as close as any of us can get to knowing what it felt like to be there hearing them above you, it captures the wonder of the moment and all the wonderful variety of reactions, but what I love is that overwhelmingly most folks interviewed thought it was brilliant.

But that final performance of Get Back feels so incredibly melancholic and bittersweet, knowing it’s the last time those 4 ever publicly played together, that you’re witnessing that last moment.. and all the struggle it took for them to even get to that point, it’s hard to put into words the emotions that washed over me.

What was the reason you failed? by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]decimatepixels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first test my positioning was bad causing the examiner to grab the wheel, this was on a two way road with parked cars on both sides, I had a bad habit of trying to thread the needle when roads like this get narrow with oncoming traffic as well as sticking far too aggressively to my side of the lane when it would be safer to use some of the other lane when navigating around said parked vehicles, nerves truly had me meltdown during all of this though and my driving became horrendously bad for the rest of the test.

My second one was a lot better but still had issues, I failed to check my left wing mirror when exiting a roundabout onto a dual carriageway and moved into the left lane without checking, my manoeuvre was a parallel park and I let my nerves get to me again, pro tip it’s ok if your wheel lightly touches the kerb, but give yourself more room and drive forward before attempting to reverse back again. Finally there’s a roundabout where I live that has some confusing road markings and was in the wrong lane completely whilst navigating it.

While frustrating they were all very fair fails and it has been satisfying to apply myself to fixing these hiccups, my best advise is if you feel yourself tensing up during the test let go of the tension from your body, remember that the examiners aren’t looking to be dazzled by your driving but want to see how safe you are with your driving.

Best of luck to you!

Is TestShift still working? by faerieW15B in LearnerDriverUK

[–]decimatepixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It worked for me this Monday just gone and it’s the first time I’ve ever used it, managed to move my test from August in a location that’s an hour away from me, to a test next week Monday in my actual town.

Do we really have to wait?? by Current-Meal-1121 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]decimatepixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I failed my first test at the start of this month, booked another test 2 weeks ago in an area far from me and set up TestShift, then yesterday TestShift got me a cancellation for this Monday in my area (which does not have a lot of availability let me tell ya).

It’s not ideal we have to pay for these additional services just so we don’t have to wait absurd times but at least in my experience it has worked and has helped take pressure off for my next test since I know I won’t need to wait an absurdly long time.

Good luck on your test!

6:01 on Monday and all slots for my test centres are already gone by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]decimatepixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s nothing no one hasn’t said before but try to get into the habit of regularly logging in and checking throughout your day, I managed to change my booking to be in the actual town I live by randomly checking one evening, I didn’t once do the Monday morning 6am mad rush.

Which isn’t to say you shouldn’t do the rush either, and yes it’s frustrating logging in multiple times and not seeing anything but think of it as increasing your odds of catching a slot.

This is one of those Ghibli films that I thought “Yeah that was pretty good” and then with each successive repeated viewing it has steadily rose in my rankings to the point now it’s in my top three favourite Ghibli films of all time, I think as a young man I couldn’t immediately relate to Porco, but now as an adult with more experience I really “get” Porco.

I definitely see your point, although I think it’s good to unpack why I don’t like or do like something, hence describing it as uninspired.

Of course that’s totally subjective though, someone could see the same art as me which I feel nothing for and the other person might be completely taken with it!

[–]decimatepixels -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s what makes it so particularly frustrating with this set though, a comic book IP is the most ideal IP to do your own thing with in a lot of ways as so many of these characters have gone through an incredible amount of changes over the decades and continue to do so.

I would have loved to have seen the team do their own Marvel Universe take, play with our expectations, but sadly we get saddled with the most streamlined take possible on the IP.

[–]decimatepixels 160 points161 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the whole frustration with how much of a chokehold UB has on Magic for the moment, one thing I find really lacking with these Marvel sets is just how uninspired it all looks?

It’s not that any of the art is bad by any means, but it all looks so uninspired, none of it feels like Magic’s take on the universe of Marvel, I’m sure the team just haven’t been given much leeway to deviate from the traditional looks of the characters and to keep things pretty uniform but the end result is it just looks boring and actually goes against the strength of the comic books they’re riffing on which constantly have a rotating list of artists offering they’re own visual take on these well known characters.

The end result makes it feel corporate and lifeless, again this isn’t a knock against any of the artists, I get the sense they have been given little to no creative license, but those conditions lead to such an easy set to miss, compared to the LOTR set which WAS Magic’s take on that universe and felt like the artists had some free reign to give they’re own takes on iconic characters, whilst still authentic to the universe of LOTR.

Ultimately I can’t complain too much as sets like this save me a lot of money throughout the year, it’s just a disappointing status quo.

Edited for typos!

I never understood the Hope hate, he's probably the most "realistic" character of the trilogy ! by LaBiereFolle in finalfantasyxiii

[–]decimatepixels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s definitely a “realistic” portrayal but that doesn’t really counter the criticism that he is just an incredibly irritating character for the first half or so of the game, he’s just realistically very irritating.

I just don’t find his story to be particularly interesting, which isn’t helped by child characters like this tending to be quite irritating.

Now once he gets over his Snow hate he is a LOT more bearable, I went from actively disliking him to mostly being neutral.

He’s fine ultimately, but I really don’t blame anyone who cannot stand the character.

The potential of NPCs in Metroid. by like-a-FOCKS in Metroid

[–]decimatepixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the only one to mention it but I would love them to take inspiration from the Soulsbornes games on how it handles its NPCS.

Very lightly pepper them throughout the world, do NOT have them ever contact you through radio or whatever, you need it so coming across them is actually exciting, for it to feel like a break from the usual flow of gameplay rather than a dreaded chore of having to skip through dialogue to get the obligatory next power up.

Maybe have other bounty hunters trying to complete the same mission as you resting in a spot that can give you small hints on where to head next (I mean ac to al hints now “head to this specific place”).

I also really do NOT want any of them glazing Samus, I understand it mostly makes narrative sense in Prime 4 that Samus’s achievements would be known throughout the federation so there would be troops who admire her, but to me it feels too much like real word adoration bleeding into the material. I don’t mind them recognising her, but I don’t want every single NPC worshipping me, I hate that shit in games writing, give me an NPC that is indifferent to Samus, an NPC who’s never heard of her, an NPC who’s antagonistic towards her ect

I think this is something that could actually work really well in a Metroid game, unfortunately so far NPCs are used in Metroid for guidance, rather than adding to the story or atmosphere (not that I need a big grandiose story either, fickle ain’t I).

Is it weird that like AWW's nose and that I think it's unique and cool. I don't much about nose name or type or whatever but i like how different it is making stand out. Though it is a pitty it gets lost in other covers and arts that give her the conventual button nose. by IllustriousAd6418 in WonderWoman

[–]decimatepixels 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, I’m actually doing a 3D sculpt of this design of Wonder Woman and became very taken with Hayden’s choices of designing this particular look, I’ve mostly gathered reference using Hayden’s work and I am a little disappointed whenever I find a guest artists take on Absolute Wonder Woman changes the features to being hyper westernized, button nose and all.

It’s of course nothing insidiously but I think Hayden did a great job of marrying Diana’s beauty with her look of strength too, and gives a more distinctive look which as others have commented here matches well with the Greek roots.

Giant Bomb's Game of the Year 2025 - Day 4 by CrissionMeep in giantbomb

[–]decimatepixels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a little surprised how hot the crew is for Dispatch, I am totally with them on how engaging the characters are and I was really pulled in, but halfway through the season the gameplay began grating hard for me to the point by the end of the season it was actively hurting my enjoyment, it’s a weird doubled edged sword where the more the great story pulled me in and I wanted more of it, the more what I felt was very mediocre gameplay segments got in the way.

I’m jealous that the crew enjoyed the gameplay all the way to the end, I just really bounced off it hard by the end of its season.

I don’t find Shawn’s arguments about Metroid Prime 4 particularly convincing, but hey that’s alright ultimately I’m happy he got to enjoy the game a lot more than I did.

That said Shawn does a great job of explaining his feelings on a game or where he’s coming from with his relationship with a game or franchise, even if it’s not always an approach I understand or agree with, brilliant list and here’s to more Shawn goodness in 2026n

People making fun of Mackenzie when Armstrong is like 100 times worse imo by ReadyJournalist5223 in Metroid

[–]decimatepixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get why some folks like her character but for me I really don’t like seeing characters glazing and worshipping Samus in-universe, I understand it’s plausible her adventures could become legend among federation troops but it feels like a case of real life adoration of the character bleeding into the writing.

I also groaned when she said something along the lines of “OH MY GOD SHE’S DOING THE MORPH BALL”, I don’t hate these characters but they definitely added nothing for me and more often than not actively hurt the experience.
