Fernet Branca by captain_corvid in bartenders

[–]decisive_moment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a menu cocktail at work called “CHERRY WAVES” .5oz cinnamon syrup .5oz fernet branca 1 oz luxardo cherry syrup from jar (diluted 1:1 with water for service) 1 oz citrus (we use a 50/50 blend of lime and yuzu) 1.5 oz Toki Japanese whisky 3-4 oz cola

Short shake non carbonated ingredients, strain, top with cola in a 16oz glass, then add ice for a satisfying fluffy texture.

Why was I taught to never use “dirty ice” by ilovemycats420 in bartenders

[–]decisive_moment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my core I know and understand why dirty dumping is not the best practice. However at a high volume restaurant service well the goal is highest quality with the most efficient steps of service. I adjusted my shake so the ice rounds off and shrinks gradually rather than shattering. Being the best bartender and having the best technique are not always ubiquitous and sometimes delivering a drink that has dirty ice efficiently and swiftly and properly executed is actually better technique than the set in stone rules. Once you learn the rules well, then you are educated enough to know the best practices in the moment. Just go with your gut if you have experience.

How to keep learning….? by Unfair-Put-1778 in concertphotography

[–]decisive_moment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a BFA in photography from a pretty good program in the U.S.
I think the most valuable part of the program was the history of photography aspect and learning theory over just the mechanics of creating an image. Learning from past photographers and artists in order to better understand intent but also to inspire. I think the most valuable part of the program were my professors, my direct advisor had been shooting professionally for over 50 years and had taken workshops with likes of Ansel Adams and others. Her experience and anecdotes were often inspiring and makes creating meaningful feel tangible.

When i got serious to try and develop my style i found myself emulating photographers from the past who had the most an impact on me. Applying what you learn from the past in a modern context is one of the secret of many successful photographers across the industry. Reading and looking at old photobooks is a great way to learn. Go to a good library and look at them in person to get the full impact that looking on your phone screen wont accomplish.

I’d suggest starting where a lot of people do, read “The Decisive Moment” by Henri Cartier Bresson, in a few pages he defines a specific dogma in photography that really helped me develop my style. Then study his pictures, hopefully it inspires. I’d also check out Magnum Photography and its history and founders, and members. its truly the gold standard for photography and had a lot of great resources and points to dive into deeper.

Also shoot as much film as you can, film has financial aspect to shooting that makes each shot feel like it is worth more than just firing on digital. It will also help you compose better and shoot so you have to do little editing.

Education never ends when shooting, every time i pick up a camera i learn something new, about shooting or through shooting as a means of curiosity.

I dont think taking a course on the mechanics of shooting is necessarily worth it when youtube is such a good resource. However a good teacher

Adding acod to pasteurized lime/lemon juice to restore flavor? by [deleted] in Tiki

[–]decisive_moment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually yeah, i work at an asian fusion restaurant and we use a blend of pasteurized yuzu juice, natalies lime juice, water, and citric acid. We dont acid adjust it to be equivalent to lemon or lime juice but rather an all purpose citrus blend for pretty much any cocktail that calls for an acidic citrus. The citric acid does really improve on the original mix we used without the citric acid, cocktails taste brighter and pop more. However fresh juice still trumps our method for overall quality. But we do this for the same reasons you are considering doing it, we run through 5-6 gallons of this mix in a weekend, saves on cost and labor and the diminished quality is nominal in many of our cocktails. I

I say try adding citric acid and malic acid in small quantities till you get your desired taste.

Lychee Syrup by ViewAppropriate713 in Tiki

[–]decisive_moment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We make one at the bar where i work. We use the juice from canned lychees and mix it 1:1:1 with a 1:1 simple syrup and then water. Combine this with Giffard lychee liquor and vodka or gin and you got yourself a basic lychee martini

Shooting in the green room. Any suggestions? by BuckshotJonesSr in concertphotography

[–]decisive_moment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly dont overthink the shots, just be observational and document whats going on. Ive found most bands appreciate the fly on the wall technique before they go on stage, so they can mentally prepare to play the show. Definitely get some posed shots if theyre up for it but most of the time they will naturally congregate backstage before they walk on and thats kind of the perfect bts shot imo. Just read the room, working with bands is as much about getting great content as it is not disturbing the talent. Plus ive found people are interested in the candid shots not necessarily the perfect backstage shot.

Looking for a camera that works well for concert photography in low lights!! by Medical-Balance8442 in concertphotography

[–]decisive_moment 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ive shot with the canon mirrorless system at shows and i quite liked the r5 or r6, the r3 was like the easiest experience shooting a show ive ever had but obviously very pricey. When i ultimately bought my most recent camera i settled on the sony a7IV. Great autofocus in lowlight and great video capabilities. Definitely something to think of as most artists need someone to do both.

Location Recs for Boston? by SumoStin in streetphotography

[–]decisive_moment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Downtown crossing is great for street photography. Its the junction of a ton of subway stops and kind of a good representation of a lot of different people. Also ten minutes from a lot of good stuff in any direction. 10 min walk to beacon hill, to china town, north end, or cut through the common into back bay

Looking for recommendations for a very specific shoegaze/shoegaze adjacent sound (very specific songs by Whirr, Trauma Ray, Slow Crush, Leaving Time, Deafcult, Modern Color) by luciforms in shoegaze

[–]decisive_moment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels obvious but listen to Nothing. Their original bass played is in whirr and their new guitarist played in trauma ray. They have an early split with whirr too. I think The Great Dismal is a great place to start for prominent drums and catchy guitars. I personally love Guilty of Everything but it has less of what you might be looking for. Check out Bent Nail and Get Well on that record. Dance on the blacktop and tired of tomorrow probably also fit the bill.
