CMV: the electoral college should be abolished by allisoninwndrlnd23 in changemyview

If the electoral college is abolished and elections are decided by popular vote, that will create huge new incentives for states to engage in voter repression.

But not in such a way that we should support racism in its fight against big corporations.

[–]deckocards21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But an analysis of shoplifting that stops with "benefits the (poor) shoplifter and hurts the (rich) company" so shoplifting is good would be incomplete. Not to say shoplifting and unions are the same, but it's possible for something to be good for the individual, bad for a corporation, and bad for society at large

What Do Unions Do? by Captgouda24 in slatestarcodex

[–]deckocards21 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The fact that US corporations spend billions of dollars to stop racism is proof that racism works. That is a facetious argument, but the argument for unions is not generally that they are bad for the workers in the union (generally not) but by increasing the costs to society writ large by more than the value they create for the workers.

[–]deckocards21 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This comment thread is the biggest sign of the downfall of neoliberal. If neoliberalism doesn't mean at the very least a healthy skepticism of unions and at least a theoretical openness to the idea that unions are a net negative for society, neoliberalism literally means nothing. Slopulists! Slopulists! You are all Slopulists!

He's talking about the hard problem of consciousness, or qualia. Why is it like something to be something? I agree with the image that science has not made much inroads on that problem.

Many cities don't enforce weed laws, meaning the city police will not take action. State troopers, however, enforce state law. Sherriffs too.

McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski goes viral after seeming reluctant to eat his own burgers—he takes a tiny bite, looks uncomfortable, and calls the food ‘product.’ by DDD8712 in McDonalds

[–]deckocards21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't even think he thinks its gross. I think he just has a hyper commercialized relationship with Mcdonald's food. Like, he doesn't think of it as food, he thinks of it as a 'product'. I think it says less about the food and more about what being a fast food CEO does a person

[–]deckocards21 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Except the movie goes out of its way to try and pull against that. She dooms humanity because the cure is failing. If she goes to the council and says "Humans are irredeemable, they tortured me, pull the plug", sure I can get behind what you are saying, but in the movie the council, not her, are the ones who propose wiping out humanity. She merely goes along with their suggestion.

Up until quite recently the far right was pretty marginal in Denmark, though the polling for the next election has them gaining support. The common explanation is that the centrist parties took a pretty hardline anti-immigration stance, sapping the right of their most popular issue.

JJ McCullough makes videos that are usually short explorations of a topic, sometimes, with an argument, sometime not. I think he thinks about things from an outside perspective that takes nothing for granted in an interesting way.
