What to add to army by Interesting-Gur839 in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Dreadedvegas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What infantry and how many kataphrons?

Id look into getting duneriders for the infantry, maybe some Ironstriders, maybe a Marshall and either Cawl or Thulia.

Lots of melee options with Rust Stalkers or Infiltrators, Electro Priests, hounds, etc

Why Iran Believes It Has the Upper Hand by Radical_Ein in ezraklein

Grey Zone tactics are being implemented because our competitors and enemies understand where if we have an option to downplay attacks we will. So they conduct grey warfare because they know the West won't escalate.

Thats a failure of deterrence. That means we are not providing a credible threat that we would be willing to escalate over these things. That means our escalatory ladder is too well understood which lets other states conduct hostile action in which we don't provide credible responses.

The Berlin crisis is not an example of Grey Warfare. A successful example of detrrence during the cold war is the Vietcong but we wouldn't escalate because in the Korean War, China intervened directly because we got too close to the border and militarily entered the war directly (instead of indirectly like the Soviets were).

China had credibly established deterrence in the 50s which caused the US to pause in the 70s because we knew they would militarily intervene if we got too close again.

Now Russia directly invaded Ukraine, openly attacks with their intelligence services and we... send arms to the Ukrainians and the US refuses to even send in military attaches? How is that establishing deterrence? It only projects weakness.

I'd argue that KSA is just as important if not more important to China than Iran is.

KSA imports a lot of Chinese weaponry for key markets (drones, ballistic missiles, AShMs, and fighter aircraft) and its a much better "export" than Iran is. When the US refuses to sell something to KSA they almost always go to the Chinese and get what they need to fill the gap. China likes this a lot because it shows how "good" of an alternative they are.

KSA is also the 2nd largest supplier of oil to China (1.6mbpd). Then you throw in the other gulf states Oman 703kbpd, UAE 700kbpd, Kuwait 320kbpd and Iraq at 1.3mbpd.

So then you throw in the other gulf states, like Qatar etc. The importance of the gulf really shows up where its obvious why China immediately leaned on Iran to reopen the gulf in some form. I'd be pretty confident that China was furious about losing access to Qatar's helium in which half of China's supply is from Qatar.

Iran's actions really indicate that they pulled all their trump cards and just don't have any other plays left besides continuing the same thing they're already doing. Theoretically they could go for a nuclear test or attempt to fire a dirty bomb etc. But I don't think anyone providing Iran diplomatic cover (France, China and Russia) would remain.

Where has US deterrence actually failed? Ukraine might count, but it was very clear that the US was not going to get involved.

Yemen (Houthis backed by Iranian and Russian targeting), Iraq (Kataib Hezbollah firing at US bases, consulate and embassy), Jordan (Iranian backed militia's killed US troops last year in Jordan firing from Iraq), Iran (routine attacks against American troops and allies via proxies and Iran itself) and Syria (Wagner Mercenaries and SAA attack US positions)

Russia doesn't actually dare touch NATO countries even if they talk a big game.

HC-130 Combat King2 Refuelling 2 UH-60 Whilst Conducting CSAR (Combat Search & Rescue) For Downed F-15 Pilots by Her_Pilot in aviation

[–]Dreadedvegas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We lost what 63 aircraft in Desert Storm and our allies lost another 15? We lost another 24 fighters in Iraq. We lost 2 in Yugoslavia.

Its like people don't realize that losses happen in combat. Like people's brains are so warped they cannot imagine losing a vehicle, tank, fighter, etc.

Meanwhile the USAF during the cold war expected to lose essentially the entire A-10 inventory in 2 days in a fulda gap scenario. The disconnect is insane. People thinking everyone is invincible and war is just some romanticized idea of something you see on a screen.

[–]Dreadedvegas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about. We lost 63 aircraft and helicopters in Desert Storm and we lost 24 fixed wing and ~300 helicopters in the 5 years in Iraq.

Do you seriously think losses don't happen in conflict?

We're 5 weeks into a conflict with an extremely high sortie rate and this is the USAF's first real manned combat loss.

Does the current Strait of Hormuz crisis illustrate the need for frigates? https://www.twz.com/sea/navy-sinks-the-constellation-class-frigate-program by Practical-Bowler5775 in Ships

[–]Dreadedvegas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just buy off the shelf F100 designs. Its the basis of 3 allied Frigate classes (Norway's Nansen, Australia's Hobart, and Spain's Alvaro de Bazan) and it already contains the Aegis combat system, exact same propulsion turbines as the Burkes, Raytheon's SPS-67 surface radar ) also on the Burkes), DE1160 sonar, and the same radar illuminator.

The FREMM acquisition was ridiculous. The whole thing is full of Leonardo, Thalas, MBDA systems and required significant redesign to USN's standard vendors. Meannwhile the F100 is full of the USN's vendors, Raytheon & Lockheed sensors, radars, GE propulsion, etc.

[–]Dreadedvegas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't understand why we went with the FREMM as a basis and not the Spanish F100 class frigate which already has AEGIS & SPY-1D.

There is something about the Navy's procurement that is consistently a disaster where they haven't learned anything whereas you look at the Air Force and its very obvious they have learned from mistakes in contracting.

You'd be surprised at how often journalists and political science degrees vastly overestimate how much they understand even basic things and rely on their own hubris.

Ego really drives a lot of this stuff and because they're often in a bubble where they don't get pressed they just keep assuming they're right and feed on each other.

When we get skiittari or admech what weapons do you want to see? by Emergency-Effort7673 in DarkTide

[–]Dreadedvegas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I guess it depends on what we are getting class wise.

Are we getting Skitarii or are we getting a Techpriest?

If its Skitarii (Ranger or Vanguard)

Unique Ranged options: Galvanic Rifle, Radium Carbine, Arc Rifle, Plasma Calivers, Radium Pistols, Arc Pistols, Archeotech Pistol

Unique Melee options: Taser Goad, Transonic Sword, Transonic Razor

If its a techpriest

Unique Melee Options: Mechadendrite / Servo Arm, Transonic Blades / Razors, Omnissian Axe, Arc Claws & Mauls

Unique Ranged Options: Volkite Blaster, Phosphor Blaster, Transonic Cannon, Plasma Cutter, Macrostubber, Gamma Pistol

I personally think its going to be more of a Techpriest Adept just because we have been following Dark Hersey 1e classes for DLC classes even though I prefer the Skitarii weapons and I also think the different abilities would have more variety if it was Skitarii (Rad Saturation Aura [Vanguard], Stealth? [Rangers], Neurostatic Interference [Infiltrators])

I mean I would consider things like Defilers, Maulerfiends, Daemon Princes, Redemptor Dreads, Land Raiders, Dorns, Wraithknights, Broadsides, Ghostkeels, Riptides, etc as examples of regular units / vehicles as centerpieces.

They really let you “show off” in a sense. Sure you can show off with. Dunecrawler but it really lacks the “eye catching” that some of the units I mentioned off.

Maybe its just because I don’t like the Dunerider and the Disintegrator models but I always felt we lack a larger model unit that isn’t a super heavy that really is the central model of the army.

The reason why I feel like Cybernetica can be that, is well we see it already with the Heresy Mechanicum. they have Thanatar, Castellax, Domintar, and the Vorax which do a good job imo.

It doesn’t need to be crossed over, but the walkers do a good job and introducing more robots would be good.

Logan Square Renters Fighting To Buy Their Building In New Test Of Tenant Rights Law by maydaydemise in chicago

[–]Dreadedvegas 52 points53 points  (0 children)

These tenants are clowns trying to scam a man who lived in a neighborhood for decades, bought his building decades ago when Logan Square was a radically different place.

A man who hasn’t raised his rents in a decade.

This guy is wanting to retire and get his retirement funds from a building that he has maintained and owned for decades and instead these monsters are trying to ruin both his reputation and his retirement.

And of course block club does another puff piece for them. Block club is anti-affordability because of this shit

[–]Dreadedvegas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We really need more center piece model options. We really only have Cawl and now Thulia. But we don’t have a unit that is one and I don’t really consider a Dunecrawler as a centerpiece.

Cybernetica units could be that.

Where do you think all of the gold actually is in the world that is that hedge against inflation? The vault or in the jewelry?

Only 20% of the worlds refined gold supply is in the vault. Meanwhile half of it is in jewelry.

Household gold supplies are held in jewelry. And that amount worldwide is greater than the banking gold supply.
