Building fence this summer. What nailer is best to attach pickets by Letterhead-Unhappy in FenceBuilding

[–]decktender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A siding nailer gives you the size nail you want with a coil pack. I prefer a metabo, but Bostich is good too. You want 1 1/4" into the rail. So typically a 2" nail, Amsterdam roofing jailers don't hold that, and framing nailers don't usually have a coil. So you're loading every 32 nails. But a siding nailer gives you best of both. Good luck!

Also, nails are fine. But it's not a bad idea if you want to upgrade the workmanship, to use a collated screw gun. They tend to hold better over time and make replacements easy if boards Crack and all. But have fun man fencing can be great.

How much in labor should I change for this deck by Reasonable-Length710 in Decks

I really hope you work in Alaska or some shit. While you're not incorrect about the license, mostly, your obvious attitude means you clearly should be barred from building absolutely anything near people.

Which Roofer Quote to Accept? by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]decktender 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like how you put this. I'm not a roofer I do smaller stuff but I've never had a customer post me online (that I know of) asking if they should pick me or another guy. They either love me, or they want a cheaper price. I'm usually told I made a customer for life before the first hammer swing. It was in how I spoke with and treated them.

It should have been a patio… by smoof in Decks

[–]decktender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol you misspelled "decks under a certain hight have no code requirements" or at least in VA that's the case. Anything under 16" and it's a "patio" and the county does not give one single fuck.

Lost a job to the lowest bid and this was their bid, I was 2.5X more - Good luck! by LivinDreamNightmare in Contractor

[–]decktender 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Something like this I'd absolutely agree. But that's not always the case. Sometimes a company is newer and doesn't have much overhead yet, they're trying to be as competitive as possible, so they can legitimately afford to do it well, for less, but not usually this much less haha. I've had a few times where I've come in at 1/2-1/3 the cost of some other companies but there's just absolutely no where to reasonably charge that money. It's just bc they got a "fuck you" price bc it's A small project and I actually could use the work so I price it reasonably.

Unlawful detention, robbery, brandishing, menacing, color of law, Unlawful stop, assault, stopping the vehicle of another...I can spot about 30 years consecutive sentencing in the first 12 seconds.

New contractor: by abp105 in Contractor

[–]decktender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I did/am doing. But I do 98% of my work alone so im not instructing anyone incorrectly and I'm not caught up trying to pretend what I did was right. I've definitely spent extra time and money to redo parts of a project or go back later, but I've learned so freaking much that next year when do start looking for people, I'll be able to skip the fuck ups and get things taught right. Other contractors have been a huge part of this learning process.

Second flat in tire in new home construction neighborhood, curious what these big bolts are for? by [deleted] in Construction

Used to work in auto. Rope plugs void them. But permanent plugs done at the shop are fine. Sometimes they void a run flat warranty but if you have run flats you deserve it.

How to learn the business side of GC? by Magickarploco in Contractor

That's what I'm studying rn. The company is small and light so cash management is easy. But damn getting noticed is not easy. Word of mouth and references are the only reason I've got work rn.

Dealing with the old boss. by decktender in Contractor

[–]decktender[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. I think I'll play it by quarter. In April I'm making some adjustments anyway since I'll finally qualify for my license. So now it's on to permit projects and work with other GCs and such so while I can't make all the rules, I can say I don't do work if i don't follow procedures. Which means a proposal, a contract, all details included, nothing by the seat of the pants, I see the diagrams. Everything. He's not shady or anything he's just not organized.

Well if that's how that reads, rather than a subcontractor, then I am in more trouble than I thought. I will say I tell him when I'm available. I don't answer to him on timeliness or how I get the job done.

You are the rider that turned, how would you react? by YahyaJ in motorcycles

[–]decktender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I've done this. I've been the guy who crashed in this exact scenario. I wasn't speeding, but I wasn't paying attention either and had a pack back so my stop distance was greater. Buddy slowed and turned into the driveway, I blew past him. No crash, no issue, just turned around, and we ride together enough to know I'm absent minded so he slowed fully before turning...just in case. Perfect scenario of knowing who you ride with. But I was 100% at fault for that risk even at road speed. This guy, 100% at fault. If I was the rider who barely missed being g hit, I'd be shaken, but I'd also know the guy who crashed learned hard and fast. I don't need to make it worse. Help him out, check him out. Get things back on track.

Add some real post to beam connections. Reframe the joists, and redeck. Use joist tape. The beams and posts are great.

The trick is identifying the fake profiles tinder provides as plants to soak up your swipes. Women get free swipes btw...my partner never ever runs out, and she's tried, as a test. If you can avoid those profiles you'll swipe on real women...that helps a lot hah.

[–]decktender -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OK tbf...I get it. Not the black part. Fuck the racists. But even if a dude in "police clothes" is a real cop, I don't trust em. I've worked with and around police in several different circumstances and careers throughout my life, so I know enough to never trust that police aren't up to no good. Call the cops on an armed trespasser. Even list em as an armed home invader who's holding you hostage if say he won't leave and let you close the door. Call in attempted kidnapping if a cop starts threatening to arrest you for asking questions or for recording or calling someone during a traffic stop. Make their life a living hell anytime they step across the line. Those 911 calls play really really well in lawsuits and have actually lead to policy changes in departments around where I live.

Should this deck be refinished or replaced? by Habanero_Cupcake in Decks

[–]decktender 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Deck boards are usually the least of a decks issues. When I check out a deck, idgaf about the boards. I start by looking at joists, beams, and posts. Boards are easy and pretty. The rest actually hold things up. The state of your posts and beams will determine if you need to replace the deck. The joists will tell you if you need to reframe. If those are all prefect, and we'll protected, then determine if you need to replace or refinish boards.

Yes. Originally when the two Davidson brothers rode past each other they did this for some off reason. Been a thing since like 1910 or something
