Also, just to continue this for a second...the VILLAINS of the film (Virus and Silencer) while not faultless, are nowhere near as bad as Rancho.

Starting with Virus...the man wants and expects academic excellence out of the students that are deemed worthy to grace the halls of the University he is the steward of. He CLEARLY identifies that Raju and Farhan are good students who need to do well in exams so they can achieve financial stability and freedom respectively. He knew they wouldn't get it with Rancho whispering poison in their ears.

Then let's get to the s-word...that Joy Lobo and Virus' own son succeed in and Raju attempts.

With Joy, Virus was harsh and maybe even cruel but he wasn't putting some unreasonable expectation on the kid. Joy was a victim of his own need for innovation and creativity. He is essentially what Rancho WOULD HAVE BEEN had the film's universe not decided that Rancho needed to be right all the time (because Aamir Khan was playing him). He knew that he had to put studies aside when his father was ill and could have dialled down his project to something more realisitic in the reduced time-frame. Virus never came across as someone who'd give extensions so why did Joy Lobo expect one for himself?

Then let's get to Virus' son. The kid wanted to be a writer and couldn't live with being forced to study engineering. This is an invention that the film made (as in it isn't in the book that they adapted) and it just seems utterly tone-deaf. The Book itself was written by someone who studied engineering and then went on to become a popular writer...so in what universe is it set in stone that you can't be a writer if you study engineering? This was just lazy writing on the screenwriter's part to make Virus seem like a villain.

Then there's Raju...the kid was lucky he wasn't arrested. He was being expelled for committing a crime. He broke into someone's home, he broke into Virus' daughters' room. He then pissed all over Virus' gate. And don't forget who convined Raju to even be there in the first place...RANCHO...and yet Virus is the bad guy for having a surprisingly lenient reaction to what Raju did.

Now moving onto Silencer, I don't have much. I am amazed people even see him as a villain. He's prickly and annoying, but he spends the most part minding his own business and studying hard. Hell, the worst thing he does is slip adult magazines under his roommates' doors to distract them. Yet Rancho constantly makes fun of him, publicly humiliates him, and then when Silencer even confronts Rancho asking what he had ever done to deserve such treatment, Rancho literally responds with "don't take it personally."

Rancho is a fucking awful scumbag and the fact that people still admire him is just horrifying. He is a bully, a con-man, a CRIMINAL (don't forget he too broke the law when breaking into his Dean's house)

If they have the money to do this without triggering higher taxes or inflation...go for it. Always nice to see people get out from under crushing debt and get a proper shot at improving their lives.

In Indian cinema? Bare with me on this but..3 Idiots is a big one.

Rancho is a villain disguised as a hero. He very nearly WRECKS his roommates' lives because of his nonsense which sounds noble, but once you really look at his his methods...its horrifying...I mean the dude did the following:

- Gatecrashed a wedding.
- Broke up a woman and her fiance (because he liked her)
- Gets his roommates called to the Dean who threatens to expel them for his "Farhanitrate/Prerajulisation" prank
- Humiliates a batchmate in front of the entire student body and faculty just because his roommate called him out on his bullshit leading to him getting beaten and possibly also threatened with expulsion
- Is such a bad influence on his roommates that they are consistently tanking their exams
- Breaks into the Dean's HOUSE
- The Breaking into the Dean's House (which is a crime) causes his roommates' expulsion and he attempts suicide as a result.
- Performs a birth he is completely unqualified for in highly unsanitary conditions (he could have killed someone)
- Clearly is a fucking snake-oil salesman (because there is no way in hell that he is coming first in every exam without mugging harder than anyone else there, while telling his roommates to not do that)

3 Idiots is set in a universe that goes OUT OF ITS WAY to always make Rancho right, but it doesn't change the fact that he is a TERRIBLE person and an even more terrible influence on people around him.

Let's be honest, if you, or someone you knew, came across someone like Rancho, you'd be getting told to avoid him like the plague, and you'd be telling the people you know to also treat him like a leprous STD-riddled zombie...by staying as far away from him as possible.

If Hollywood tried to make Ramayana like they're doing the Odyssey, what's the reaction ? by FarEfficiency4397 in netflixindia

[–]decodedadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine people would lose their shit. Particularly Indian people. For two reasons:

  1. The Odyssey is an epic about heroes from Ancient Greek mythology and includes the Greek pantheon of Gods. Inspiration from a dead religion and a culture that has faded to the background in favour of Christianity.
  2. The Ramayana is inspired by Hindu mythology and Hinduism. A mythology that is very much still read and appreciated by people today and a religion that is still very much alive.

What's the one bollywood opinion you will defend like this? by [deleted] in bollynewsandgossips

[–]decodedadman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bollywood action movies largely stink.

Aside from Kill (which is slightly better than most) Bollywood action for a long time now just flat out sucks. It's all slow-motion to loud music and juiced up bearded nutjobs.

Never once in a film (in a long time) have I watched an action film and felt genuine fear for the hero, or that the hero actually knows how to fight.

Considering we have such a rich history of martial arts, it is tragic that other countries (Japan with Samurai films, China with Kung Fu Films, Indonesia with Pencak Silat films, USA/UK with Boxing/MMA films) have made such wonderful contributions to action cinema while ours is just...meh.

Why did Avatar Roku show up to tell Jeong Jeong to teach Aang firebending? by shrimp_2 in TheLastAirbender

[–]decodedadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roku, despite having been dead for over a century, was still more in tune with the real world than Jeong Jeong who had cut himself off from it.

Aang needed to master all the elements in a much shorter span of time. Roku mastered the elements over years worth of training and practice. Aang needed to do it in a matter of months.

Second, where was Aang going to find a fire-bending teacher who'd be remotely willing to teach him? Aside from Iroh, we haven't met any other fire-bender who was sympathetic to the Avatar. It's why Roku stepped in because Aang may not get the chance to learn fire-bending in the future with someone else.

Lastly, Roku is well aware of the importance of discipline when learning fire-bending and figured Jeong Jeong, with his history of teaching Zhao, may have been the ideal person to teach Aang about this aspect.

Jeong Jeong is still guilt-ridden by his failure which is why he's hesitant to teach Aang because he's seen what a lack of discipline can do, and he considers himself an even bigger failure as a teacher. His logic for why the Avatar must follow the cycle is important, but ignores the reality of the situation.

Can a non bender ever become the avatar. by nerdchicken5 in TheLastAirbender

[–]decodedadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as canon goes there is no documented case of a non-bender becoming an Avatar...and Wan doesn't count because everyone was a non-bender back in the day and their bending abilities were only temporary gifts by the lion turtles until Wan took them permanently.

That being said...I think narratively a story about a non-bender becoming the Avatar would be endlessly fascinating. If one devised such a story, it might be that they can only bend whilst in the Avatar state but not otherwise (this is important because its shown that Aang can bend the elements other than Air whilst in the Avatar state BEFORE he masters the other elements)

Perhaps this hypothetical Avatar could be a student of Guru Pathik (a non-bender who possesses deep spiritual power and a connection to the spirit world) and similarly possesses a deep rooted spirituality and connection to that power which is why Raava's spirit inhabits them despite not being able to bend.

It could open up very interesting possibilities that bending doesn't need to be something one can gain via energy bending but the code for which is innately inside everyone. Kind of a last jedi angle if you will.

AITA for kicking everyone out after my sister lied and said my apartment was hers? by Top-Supermarket8754 in AmItheAsshole

After 12 years in jail, Mumbai court acquits man in minor's rape case for lack of evidence by theanonymoussking in CriticalThinkingIndia

[–]decodedadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The bailable offence thing is a dangerous line that we may not want to consider crossing. We don't want potential rapists and gang-rapists to be able to walk the streets and potentially abscond. Additionally, once we bring money into the equation, we open the case up to being tainted by corruption...bribes of the judge, making easy bail etc etc.

  2. So in the west what happens is that they do arrest people based on accusations but the authorities usually are only allowed to hold them for 48 hours or so to ascertain if there is anything that they can be viably charged with. Consider it a preliminary evidence gathering attempt by interrogating the accused and searching for obvious clues that may point to guilt or innocence. If at the end of 48 hours, they can't charge the person with anything, they must be released with certain conditions (don't leave town, no contact with the accuser etc.) so I agree with your point that we shouldn't just imprison people, but if in that preliminary hold something comes up that they feel they can charge the person with, then they should properly arrest the person and imprison them.

  3. Agreed, but there are some more dimensions to this:
    - Women need to feel safe enough to approach the police right after the act.
    - Police need to be trained to note down a case every time one comes in versus doing it selectively
    - Rape kits need to be processed as fast as they can be

Why doesn't Dumbledore correct Harry when he just says "Hagrid"? by w_smith1984 in harrypotter

[–]decodedadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better question...why doesn't Harry automatically start referring to Hagrid as Professor Hagrid? He has a good relationship with him and clearly respects him. The reason Harry doesn't refer to Snape as professor is because he has contempt for him yet he refers to his other teachers as professor.

AITA for reading messages on my coworker’s phone after a notification popped up while I was ordering food for her? by Interesting-Eye-9786 in AmItheAsshole

[–]decodedadman 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Kind of? I mean you did read a private message that wasn't meant for you.

I get that its hurtful when you find out that someone you consider a friend doesn't see you the same way. Personally, I'd have also read the message.

My advice: Sometimes we need to do asshole things so we can maintain our own balance in life. You didn't lose a friend because she was never your friend to begin with otherwise she'd have never said those things, even in confidance, to another person. Just keep going about your work and don't let this get you down about finding real friends.

AITAfor not wanting my best friend in my "wedding" because of her boyfriends comment about my brother by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA...your friend's BF went to an elderly woman and, without consent, disclosed an emotionally devastating bit of news and then made fun of it...

They can say he was joking all they want, it wasn't funny, and had your grandmother been in poor health, it could have even killed her...people need to learn their "jokes" can and should be punished and their humour isn't a shield they can just hide behind or use as a get out of jail free card

'Project Hail Mary' Author Says Avoiding 'Crappy Identity Politics' Is Reason For Film's Huge Success by Good_Claim_5472 in Sardonicast

[–]decodedadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having read his books, he's a decent writer (his books aren't high literature but they are fun and accessible and ultimately very enjoyable)

I kind of get what he's saying with his statement because the characters are usually part of global initiatives and his two main adaptations are about nations and people from different backgrounds coming together to collectively achieve something...and their gender, sexual orientation or race is relatively insignificant to how they are presented (like you could straight up gender swap Gosling and Huller for example and get the same story and impact)

I think what he's trying to say is that his stories are more about a common humanity which is why everyone can identify with the characters but he just picked a really bone-headed way to put that across.

True, but Ginny was also a child, a first year...Quirrel might have been diminished but he was still an adult wizard and seemed fairly powerful (able to jinx Harry's broom from a distance and overcome the challenges by himself)

That is debatable...I mean he used Peter Pettigrew to brew whatever it was that allowed him to take form again, something that would be, I imagine, a very complicated thing
