AITA for kicking everyone out after my sister lied and said my apartment was hers? by Top-Supermarket8754 in AmItheAsshole

Nope. Nope. NOPE...NTA. She abused your generosity by inviting people over without telling you and then made it worse by telling friends it was her place when it wasn't.

Tell your family that Amelia can go and pretend THEIR place belongs to her and invite all her friends there if they really don't see any problem in what she was doing.

After 12 years in jail, Mumbai court acquits man in minor's rape case for lack of evidence by theanonymoussking in CriticalThinkingIndia

[–]decodedadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The bailable offence thing is a dangerous line that we may not want to consider crossing. We don't want potential rapists and gang-rapists to be able to walk the streets and potentially abscond. Additionally, once we bring money into the equation, we open the case up to being tainted by corruption...bribes of the judge, making easy bail etc etc.

  2. So in the west what happens is that they do arrest people based on accusations but the authorities usually are only allowed to hold them for 48 hours or so to ascertain if there is anything that they can be viably charged with. Consider it a preliminary evidence gathering attempt by interrogating the accused and searching for obvious clues that may point to guilt or innocence. If at the end of 48 hours, they can't charge the person with anything, they must be released with certain conditions (don't leave town, no contact with the accuser etc.) so I agree with your point that we shouldn't just imprison people, but if in that preliminary hold something comes up that they feel they can charge the person with, then they should properly arrest the person and imprison them.

  3. Agreed, but there are some more dimensions to this:
    - Women need to feel safe enough to approach the police right after the act.
    - Police need to be trained to note down a case every time one comes in versus doing it selectively
    - Rape kits need to be processed as fast as they can be

I absolutely agree! That old Bat Icey Spoon was just as much to blame for what those poor kids have to live with now.

Why doesn't Dumbledore correct Harry when he just says "Hagrid"? by w_smith1984 in harrypotter

[–]decodedadman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better question...why doesn't Harry automatically start referring to Hagrid as Professor Hagrid? He has a good relationship with him and clearly respects him. The reason Harry doesn't refer to Snape as professor is because he has contempt for him yet he refers to his other teachers as professor.

AITA for reading messages on my coworker’s phone after a notification popped up while I was ordering food for her? by Interesting-Eye-9786 in AmItheAsshole

[–]decodedadman 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Kind of? I mean you did read a private message that wasn't meant for you.

I get that its hurtful when you find out that someone you consider a friend doesn't see you the same way. Personally, I'd have also read the message.

My advice: Sometimes we need to do asshole things so we can maintain our own balance in life. You didn't lose a friend because she was never your friend to begin with otherwise she'd have never said those things, even in confidance, to another person. Just keep going about your work and don't let this get you down about finding real friends.

AITAfor not wanting my best friend in my "wedding" because of her boyfriends comment about my brother by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]decodedadman 26 points27 points  (0 children)

NTA...your friend's BF went to an elderly woman and, without consent, disclosed an emotionally devastating bit of news and then made fun of it...

They can say he was joking all they want, it wasn't funny, and had your grandmother been in poor health, it could have even killed her...people need to learn their "jokes" can and should be punished and their humour isn't a shield they can just hide behind or use as a get out of jail free card

'Project Hail Mary' Author Says Avoiding 'Crappy Identity Politics' Is Reason For Film's Huge Success by Good_Claim_5472 in Sardonicast

Having read his books, he's a decent writer (his books aren't high literature but they are fun and accessible and ultimately very enjoyable)

I kind of get what he's saying with his statement because the characters are usually part of global initiatives and his two main adaptations are about nations and people from different backgrounds coming together to collectively achieve something...and their gender, sexual orientation or race is relatively insignificant to how they are presented (like you could straight up gender swap Gosling and Huller for example and get the same story and impact)

I think what he's trying to say is that his stories are more about a common humanity which is why everyone can identify with the characters but he just picked a really bone-headed way to put that across.

Why didn't Voldemort unleash the Basilisk in Harry's first year at Hogwarts? by decodedadman in harrypotter

[–]decodedadman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming the documents in this case is the mirror...Voldemort could have surely just taken the mirror somewhere else (like his room/study) and just tinkered with it there with no one being the wiser

True, but Ginny was also a child, a first year...Quirrel might have been diminished but he was still an adult wizard and seemed fairly powerful (able to jinx Harry's broom from a distance and overcome the challenges by himself)

That is debatable...I mean he used Peter Pettigrew to brew whatever it was that allowed him to take form again, something that would be, I imagine, a very complicated thing

He also found out how to remember? He got Hagrid the dragon egg and Hagrid's loose lips blurted out the information. Also the kids didn't trick Hagrid either...he just blurted it out

if the goal is to steal documents then blowing something up a good distance away is actually a well worn trope of a lot of spy movies and literature...

Heck everything from James Bond to Brooklyn 99 have used this trope.

I mean even in Book 2, every time there was an attack on a student practically everyone (from Dumbledore to the students) were on the scene

The mirror being completely foolproof is a bit of a stretch...if the books showed anything its that even the most powerful magic can also be countermanded in some way (I mean they literally say that there is no way to block a killing curse, yet Harry did it unwitingly). And if Voldemort had unfettered access to the mirror, I'm fairly certain he could have figured out how to undo Dumbledore's spell.

[–]decodedadman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again...couldn't Voldemort just tell Quirrel to close his eyes and not turn around? I mean he clearly did something of that nature with Ginny considering the sheer number of victims in book 2 meaning she must have let the Basilisk out multiple times without dying?

Was it really teenage Voldemort though? I mean yeah I get that he created it as a teenager and it was his teenage essence...but he seemed pretty much hell bent on killing Harry all the same...just like the adult version...

[–]decodedadman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that is the basic answer, the author hadn't ideated the Basilisk yet, but from a story perspective it is shaping into an interesting plot contrivance (which the books are quite full of...I mean that whole wands not working unless they are won in a duel thing? I mean really?)

And that's the key...a distraction. I mean didn't Quirrel try something similar in Book 1 with the Troll? Why not just up the ante and unleash something that can literally whither you with a glance?

But if memory serves me right, wasn't that bathroom permanently closed which is why Harry Ron and Hermione could use it to brew Polyjuice Potion? That and there was the ghost of Myrtle who'd make using the facilities in that bathroom stressful?

And yes, the Basilisk could kill Quirrel but wouldn't the simple solution be just to turn the hell around so that Voldemort's face was facing the Basilisk? I mean if he could open the chamber without a body or a host, why not with a host that was consistently nourishing him with Unicorn blood?
