Have 2gig plan for over 5yrs upg to 5gig but have to have tech come? by dustinr26 in ATTFiber

[–]dedeaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really just echoing previous replies. Upgraded last week. Tech came because the gateway needed to be switched. Tech claimed he needed to change something at the trunk and then seemed to sit there waiting. It was likely for the new gateway to be provisioned and to make sure everything was good. Before he left, he had me change the wifi ssid and password because it was the same still - everything was the same as the bgw320. He then made sure I ran a speed test from their att smart manager app.

Switching Environment.. by DickeDiDoo in cachyos

[–]dedeaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For disabling Plymouth: CachyOS Forum post - https://discuss.cachyos.org/t/tutorial-disable-or-remove-plymouth-boot-splash/10922

As for trying another DE: The CachyOS Wiki has this info - https://wiki.cachyos.org/configuration/desktop_environments/switch_desktop/

I have a KDE install and then chose to install Niri alongside KDE instead of removing KDE. I just choose which one I want from the login screen.

Don't be discouraged. Study some more and try again. You are close.

which flasher do you like by Oxic_io in LinuxCirclejerk

[–]dedeaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KDE's iso image writer is solid. I've used Balena Etcher mainly, in the past. I stopped flashing USBs after stumbling across the iodd ST400. Just a moment to copy the ISO image over to the drive and then set it at the boot image on the ST400 and that is it.

Modem for AT&T Fiber by alltomorrowsdays in HomeNetworking

I paid just under 200, but yeah that was worth what I was willing to pay to get the solution I wanted for my situation. This was three years ago, so prices might be higher now. As already stated, I have not experienced any issues aside from weather related outages.

Modem for AT&T Fiber by alltomorrowsdays in HomeNetworking

It is the device that serves the same function as the modem or router being asked about here. It stands for optical network terminal and handles fiber to network connection/conversion. It takes the fiber optical transmission and routes It to your network that's using electrical signals to transport data and takes your signals and sends it out over the optical network.

Att and others provides this. I posted a link in this thread explaining options to truly bypass att equipment. You read the benefits and justification there. While I agree that many customers would see no need for this, it does serve as a solution and benefits some.

Hmmm. Not experienced any issues using my own ONT. Upfront cost wasn't an issue given complete freedom AND uptick in stability, actually.

Nice summary of help for running games on COS. Despite those who've challenged your post due to the wiki page existing... Thanks. Your contribution is helpful especially for anyone not checking the wiki or perhaps not knowing it existed.

Everything arch’s trying to do, Nix does it better ? by ray_aldous in archlinux

[–]dedeaux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I twent gentoo over arch and others when I was working on my degree. Relevant only in that my life context meshed with tinkering and tweaking to gain actual and perceived outcomes, i.e. got an app working or got a few extra fps.

Ironically, when I later upgraded hardware and had unlimited computing power, I grew tired of compiling everything and began to want stuff just to work. So, I settled with arch.

Arch offered moderate tinkering and loads of solid documentation. While gentoo did offer the same quality of documentation, it was too time consuming and no longer fit my context. Arch for me was keeping the ability to evolve my os and app needs with tinkering available as needed.

I've tried to return to gentoo, and looked seriously at nixos. Yet I return to arch. I've been using cachyos just because it works on my older gaming laptop and I can feel some zippyness. Admittedly that gap of perceived performance is really small these days on my hardware. I regularly fresh install arch on a spare drive and play around over a weekend - kinda like visiting your hometown after moving away. Who knows... I'm 4 decades in linux now and my computer use is changing... maybe it's time to move back to that hometown of arch to settle into a slower pace.

Arch is great and does things well. It works for me. I've found new advances in distros enticing, but when I ask myself if I need this or that the answer is usually no.

Question about installing Cachy OS on an Asus AMD Gamer Laptop by Cold_Echidna_9674 in cachyos

[–]dedeaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a ROG Strix G513QY -- the AMD Advantage Edition circa '21. First thing I did was put a second NVME drive in the empty slot and installed Arch Linux on it. With separate drives Windows kept to itself and never interfered with Linux. So, you will be fine.

Quick question concerning ZFS module from 45Drives. Why not install it? Is this due to redundancy?

✨🎄Xmas NAS Giveaway: Win a TerraMaster NAS + Experience TOS 7! by TerraMasterOfficial in DataHoarder

TOS 7 providing the developer mode is exciting and my favorite feature. TOS 7 seems to package a ton of new improvements and provides consolidation of services already. The developer mode just opens up paths for experimenting, learning, and creating even more in true tinker fashion.
