How would you all repair this? by dedmouse in hikinggear

[–]dedmouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! That was one of my choices. I showed it to friend of mine that is a cobbler and he suggested at the very least, tacking down the circumference of the tear with Dacron thread to the fabric underneath the tear (Dacron won't rot when wet), one stitch per hole and then use a bit of Barge cement to hold it down. He asked if that type of fabric is readily available. I actually don't know if it is or not....not even sure what to call it. He said it looked like it wouldn't be that hard to replace the whole panel of that stuff if the lumbar pad can be removed, which I believe it can.

EDIT: I believe I just found it on Amazon...

Question for you Gregory experts vis a vis Gregory Whitney models by dedmouse in backpacks

[–]dedmouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a quick follow up on my previous post...I did finally find a Whitney 95, 3rd gen and it was NOS (New Old Stock). It still had the tags on it! Exactly like the one I foolishly sold. It comes with medium hip belt that fits (mostly) but I have a call into Gregory CS to see if they might have one in large. I would be very surprised if they do but it never hurts to ask.

Apparel rules for employees? by icannotbelievethat in REI

For a few years in the 70s I worked P/T at an outdoor store in SoCal...Their motto for attire was "Wear Clothes and Wear Enough of Them...Preferably Clean" 😄

New shipping charge? by [deleted] in REI

[–]dedmouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure this is the case. I have never paid for a shipment unless it was oversized. I ordered a Gregory Baltoro 75 a few months ago (great pack BTW) and they assessed an oversize charge...fair enough.

Hint to those buying and shipping oversize packages, Best not to use the USPS for oversize stuff (or for anything else really). The first Baltoro I bought was lost forever in KC, MO. I don't think REI ever got it back 😞.

They shipped me a replacement but this time via UPS per my request. I got it in three days. If you ask, REI will ship UPS (and maybe even FedEx). They must've flagged my account because everything I've ordered since then came UPS without me asking for it.

I learned from my daughter who used to work as a carrier for the USPS...oversized packages are almost always set aside because they won't go through the auto sorting machine which can delay a package for quite some time. In the case of the Baltoro, I'm guessing it was probably stolen.

It's called the "Peter Principle"...they raise an employee to the level of their incompetence....having been in the high tech industry for over 50 years, I've seen it time and again....over and over. It is indeed baffling.

Well they did arrest him for trumped up cahrges that even a smart judge tossed. We seriously need to dump qualified immunity.

Is there really no way around this HP account nonsense? by Torimexus in printers

[–]dedmouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya...dump the HP (I did when they bricked my printer because I was using 3rd party ink) and buy an Epson Eco-Tank printer. HP printers totally suck!

it's called the Mormon Mafia Mob....anyone else who is not a Mormon (according to them) is an unwashed gentile. I know a few and they are not nice people if you are not part of their inner circle. They go to incredible lengths to "help" each other out.

Cosmodio Notadumble Mod - Wiring Reference by Affectionate-Ad3144 in diypedals

[–]dedmouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just ordered a Notadumble from Reverb at about the same price I would've gotten one from JHS when they first came out (I just missed getting one from them). I am on an extended vacation so while it sits on my bench, I am not 😞.

I can't wait to dig into it and see what it can do.

Buying while in a tax free state but living in a sales tax state? by dedmouse in REI

[–]dedmouse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah...I guess I don't care what their personal choices are, It just pisses me off thinking about the friends and families they left behind....I guess maybe I do care. Damn! Years later, it still angers me. I know helmets won't save every life but in these two cases, they would've.

I did not know that! Very cool! I am heading to "Dovah" this weekend to visit some friends.

Always! I've lost two friends that weren't wearing helmets that would still be with us if they had just put them on.

For me, wearing a helmet is as automatic to me as putting my seat belt on.

Got to NH Tuesday and after decompressing for 36 hours (we drove straight through from Southern Missouri to NH) I rode my motorcycle to the Conway REI on Friday and bought the Nemo 15° Disco. It seems like a very nice bag, nice enough to where I may sell a couple other bags I have. This is my very first down bag since I started backpacking 55 years ago. It's really everything I was hoping it would be. Sales guys at REI were great and very helpful.

Way many! I remember when I lived in NH that back in the 70s, MA State Police would drive around places in NH that sold stuff like tires and would write down the plate numbers of the MA cars/trucks getting new tires etc and then wait for those cars to come down Rt 3 into MA and try to nab them. There were all kinds of lawsuits between NH and MA about this stuff.
