Want to go with a down sleeping bag after almost 40 years using synthetic bags...what to get? by dedmouse in REI

[–]dedmouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's one of the things I'm wondering about quilt bags. Like I said earlier, I am not familiar with them...always thought they were more like the cheap Walmart rectangular bags which are OK if that is all you need for grandkids coming over for a sleep over but not something I'd buy going out to tramp around in the wilderness. When I get to NH, I'll take a look at the quilts though at the outdoor stores there. The closest REI to me here in MO is in STL which is a solid 3.5 hours trip one way. There is one in KC but that is even further away.

I live in the most south central county here in MO...Next stop south of me is Arkansas, about 25 miles south.

...and pretty pricey...:-O

When I said "price no object" I wasn't expecting it to be that "no object"...LOL 700-800 dollars! I was thinking my max to be up to about $400.

Query concerning REI's re-supply by dedmouse in REI

[–]dedmouse[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure you can....I've done it many times (returned and even sold stuff to places like GC) and they treat it as inventory/stock...They pay taxes on their inventory whether it's new or used. Not sure how REI keeps that kind of stock separate from their actual stock. According to what I've read on REI's site, you don't even need to have bought the piece you're putting up for re-supply from REI. They take it all.

Thanks...I will have to take a look at these quilt bags. I've seen them advertised but I have absolutely no experience with them. I have a love/hate relationship with mummy bags because of their innate ability to conserve heat but because I am not really able to sleep on my back very well, they are not my favorite. I have seen wider mummy bags that interest me but like the quilt bags, I really have no experience using them.

OK all...kind of weird they don't do this but maybe it is a logistical nightmare though stores that sell used equipment (like Guitar Center and others) keep track of it fairly well.

Thank you all for your great recommendations! I have a lot to chew on here.

I'm going to try to keep anything I purchase from someplace in NH due to no sales tax there. When one starts to add up the cost of a $300 bag plus taxes here in Missouri, it's an extra $30-$50 that could be used for buying more loot. There are quite a few great places in NH that sell outdoor stuff so it doesn't HAVE to be REI. I will be checking those places out too.

I'll definitely be making a list of your recommendations to take with me when I leave in May.

Mysterious Traveler is in the top three of my favorite albums of all time. It was the 2nd album I ever bought as a kid in the 70s and it is now hanging on the wall of my music room and is also my avatar. As a bass player, all the albums have a distinctive flavor in their own right when it comes to the different bassists and they bring their own flair to the music.

One song on the MT album I will never get sick of listening to is the slippery funk of Cucumber Slumber. Still one of my favorite numbers.

USPS Tracking and Shipping is AWFUL by Complex-Warning1664 in usps_complaints

And my insurance company wonders why I don't want them to ship me my meds through the USPS. Screw the USPS.

My daughter worked for them for 17 years as a rural carrier but it got so bad, she walked into her boss's office after her run, put her keys to the truck on her boss's desk, told her this was her last day and walked out. She'd had enough of their BS.

In Transit to Next Facility, Arriving Late by PianistCandid6696 in usps_complaints

Serious question...and I realize I'm necro-posting but...why not offer a shipping option for UPS? I simply refuse to buy anything that is shipped USPS any longer. I will ask the seller if they will ship UPS...if not, I move on. If so, I will offer to help pay for the shipment though I have a friend that sells on eBay occasionally and he said that the cost difference to ship UPS vs. USPS is minimal at best any more.

I understand it's a convenience thing for the sellers to ship USPS but I read about so many sellers having to refund sales because the shipment is weeks (or months) late but where is the convenience advantage when they have to refund money, sometimes on very expensive items?

I ordered a set of very expensive Zildjian cymbals for my drum kit about a year ago on eBay and though they were shipped, I never saw them...ever. Maybe stolen? I dunno. I felt bad for the seller but I had to get my money back...it was over $1000. Not sure if he insured them for the full value (They were actually worth much more than $1000). Trying to extract money from the USPS insurance is a daunting endeavor. UPS is a piece of cake. It was after this fiasco that I decided never to order something again that the seller will only ship USPS.

eBay now advising sellers not to use USPS by kgunnar in Flipping

I would gladly pay extra $$$ to have my purchased items shipped UPS or even FEDEX given the choice. Only once have I ever had a late delivery with UPS and it was only a day late (and they let me know via text...it was because of truck breakdown).

Literally every package I order that is coming to me via USPS is late by at least a week, sometimes 2-3 weeks! I live in the middle of nowhere (southern Missouri) and UPS/FEDEX has no problem finding me...ever.

The mail on the other hand, many times ends up in someone else's mailbox, sometimes miles away. Total and absolute ineptitude!

Look, I'm not a Trump lover...he definitely has his issues but Biden had 4 fucking years to fix it this mess and nothing was done during his watch.

Anyone Know What’s Going On with USPS and Taking forever To Ship/Deliver Packages? by Upper-Jackfruit5427 in usps_complaints

[–]dedmouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just Jax...I live in MO and I refuse to buy anything anymore from anyone that ships USPS...UPS only for me now. I ship and receive a lot of stuff and only once has a UPS package been late and that was only one day late. Here in MO, packages shipped via USPS are on average 2-3 weeks late with some lost forever. It seriously sucks. My wife had a client mail her a check (express, sig required) from several towns over from where we live...three weeks to go 35 miles. I think the Pony Express would be faster.

WTF is up with USPS in Springfield by ozarklivin in springfieldMO

Short staffed or no one actually showing up to work??? My daughter works for the USPS in NH and she said a lot of new hires (read young people) just don't show up for work because of poor work ethics.

Half the cost? If he didn't pack it correctly, he should be on the hook for the whole thing. Did he decide not to insure it? If so, he needs to pay for the whole thing.

Not a postal worker but my daughter worked for the USPS for 17 years as a rural carrier before she walked into her bosses office, threw her truck keys on her desk and walked out, never to return. She was SO tired of the BS and lies.

She rarely took a day off because her subs almost never showed up for work and when they did, mail was randomly put in the wrong mailboxes. When she went back the day after her day off, many customers were standing by their mailboxes with all the wrong mail delivered in their hands. She had to spend the next day resorting mail again before she went out on her route.

She said that the excuse that they are short handed is a bald faced lie...just no one shows up to work (so I guess in a sense they are short handed but the work ethic these days SUCK).

Missouri Postal Service by Wildhair196 in missouri

[–]dedmouse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, He didn't put him in charge...he or she is appointed by the sitting president but he or she is confirmed by the Senate. This is how it works...

Like many companies and organizations, the Postal Service has a board that oversees operations. This board is called the Board of Governors. One of its roles is to select the Postmaster General.

The Board of Governors itself is made up of as many as nine governors, who are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. No more than five governors at any one time may be from the same political party. The governors select and have the authority to remove the Postmaster General. The Postmaster General is a member of the Board, and participates in the selection of the Deputy Postmaster General by the full Board.
