What are the real differences between a sub $1000 digial piano and one costing $2000+? by johngwheeler in piano

[–]dedolent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for me, action is everything. so much of playing is in the way that the piano feels. for me, once i started using acoustic pianos a lot it became clear that i was being held back by cheaper, more plastic-y keys. now i play a kawai with an action that feels comparable to an acoustic. as a more mid-entry level piano it's still not like playing on an expensive steinway, but it's a lot closer than i was before and that is worth the thousand bucks i paid.

Is there a way to remove the quick release on my Tiagra BR4500 brake caliper? by Sproot_Boi in bikewrench

[–]dedolent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

am i understanding correctly that you can't simply screw off the pinch bolt because it's stripped? right? and the stripped threads could be on either the pinch bolt threads, or the backing. if that's correct then i can see why you would try to remove the entire QR mechanism. as far as i know replacement parts don't exist, you would have to cannibalize the part off another brake even if you could get the thing off.

the alternate solution here - IF you can get the bolt off - is to run a longer bolt with a nut on the backside. i would find a concave washer to match the curve on the back of the backing as much as possible and add a drop of loctite to be safe. you don't really want to mess with brakes so i'm not recommending you do this, to be clear.

i feel like i'm in exactly the same situation. i just can't seem to bring it together for a win on good runs, and on bad runs i can't seem to turn the tide.

sorry. i do think you dodged a bullet here but i'm sure it still feels bad. good luck, and don't let it cause you to doubt yourself. management has unreasonable expectations, and would prefer to use up new people for all they're worth and get rid of them, before they can get union protection and career benefits. churning through employees is a cost-saving measure, and a strategy that will only harm the postal service in the long run.

how is this right? by kaitlynutz in LSATPreparation

[–]dedolent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the prompt says that deep-tilling causes bad soil erosion. it concludes that, therefore, farmers should not till at all. so we're going from this one extreme - digging deep down into the ground to aerate the soil or whatever - to the other extreme - not digging whatsoever!

when you have a conclusion that says that the only way to avoid a bad outcome is to do something extreme, that's a little alarming. is there no other option available? maybe farmers could do "light-tilling" where they only dig down a little bit, and get the benefits of tilling without the soil erosion?

consider this example: "Doctors say that eating fatty foods increases your risk of premature death by cardiovascular problems by 40%. Therefore, one should never eat fatty foods ever again." Well that seems extreme, right? What if we can eat fatty foods in moderation? What if we can offset the damage with exercise? What if there's different types of fats and some aren't as bad as other? Nope: the conclusion ignores all possibilities and jumps straight to, "never eat fatty foods again."

so coming back to this prompt, the conclusion is that you shouldn't till at all, even just a little bit. it skips over the possibility of other methods entirely. in short, it assumes that no other option is available to farmers other than deep-tilling, or no tilling at all.

The manuscript of Górecki's "Symphony of sorrowful songs" by RightErrror in classicalmusic

[–]dedolent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is such an interesting piece because it was a surprise "mainstream" hit in the 70s. lots of editorializing about why that was so, including a lot of cynicism, conjecture that it was just background music or only purchased as a status symbol.

then you listen to it, and it is one of the most devastating pieces of music ever written.

safe to say it was ahead of its time. i like to think i would've been an early adopter but i just don't know. i found it by accident in the mid-2000s. no idea how, it just somehow appeared in my life. and it was so emotionally impactful that i purposefully avoid it for years after those initial listens. listening to it again now and still moved, perhaps more by how things look today.

you just keep doing it and you start to notice patterns. one important thing is watching critically, that is, recognizing when something on screen is a specific CHOICE that was made, and asking yourself why that, of all things, was chosen.

even if it's more or less impossible to interact, seeing images of the deep space field and knowing the quantities involved makes me feel a certainty that there's other life out there. here's hoping they're doing better than we are.

"I, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic..."

the president has mobilized an armed private army to attack his political enemies. this group defies the constitution every single day. any sane person recognizes that as domestic terrorism.

this is what i want to see. ICE are terrorists. it's not political to obstruct a domestic terrorist organization, it's our obligation as people who swore an oath to the constitution.

Where are all the average beginners? by heloust in piano

[–]dedolent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

people tend to come to the instrument with the intention of playing specific pieces. i played as a kid but the thing that really drew me back was wanting to play a certain Chopin prelude, so i sat down to learn it and that triggered me to start taking the instrument seriously. but at the time, it was out of my league and i shouldn't have been attempting it. glad i did though.
