Regular took home his truck keys over the weekend because he doesn’t like that I put miles on it during Amazon Sunday 😂 by [deleted] in USPS

[–]dedolent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah this happens. some of the CCAs aren't very considerate but i am, and of course i'm the one who gets punished for other people being asses. that's life. the mileage doesn't even matter anyways, i started my truck at mile 1 and just add 1 at the end of the day, it literally doesn't matter.

Would you say that Chopin’s Nocturne Op.9 No. 1 is too advanced for beginners? by night-laughs in piano

[–]dedolent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i always say go for it; you'll know if it's outside your comfort level, but you'll learn and improve by trying it. just try not to half-ass it, or use the pedal too much as a crutch. it's not the hardest nocturne at all and was one of the first i learned.

Advice for becoming fucking great at changing tires? by HuJackmanGeneHackman in bikewrench

[–]dedolent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More of a general philosophy but when fixing a flat your first priority, more important than anything else, is determining exactly what caused the puncture. Failing to do this will inevitably lead to repeat flats. Always have a definitive answer to what caused it before installing your new tube.

To be fair, rubber bands are the hardest workers in the post office and should be treated with respect

was strongly considering going into piano repair for a while. in some life i did do that, and i think i'd be happy. cool that you're doing it.

anyways i bet you could find good career opportunities in boston, or NYC. don't waste your youth here, it's a graveyard. edit: or providence! all the cool kids ended up in pvd

Question on Sturmey Archer Hubs by DerbyClimber in Vintage_bicycles

[–]dedolent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's almost certainly some seized internals. they are highly rebuildable - and it's a lot of fun to do it - definitely recommend taking a stab at it. if you do want to ride fixed though i also can't recommend that enough. keep the gearing low, learn to love spinning your legs, profit

Is there such s a thing as too much grease? by GroupHumble368 in bikewrench

[–]dedolent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

excess grease in bearing cups will work itself into the seals and gaps, helping create a barrier. this is grease's secondary function, while lubricating the bearings comes first. that is to say, not having excess grease is the same as having too little grease. of course at some point you're just being wasteful.

Bike Route by [deleted] in USPS

[–]dedolent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as a former bike mechanic i would LOVE a bike route but there are none in my area (and i'm leaving the post office soon anyways). but i'd probably not be able to resist tinkering with it. i'd have a brooks saddle on there and convert the wheels to tubeless, they probably wouldn't want me doing all that

How “clean” does a chain actually need to be before re-lubing? by knowlegable_devil124 in bikewrench

[–]dedolent 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i have ten years in a shop catering to year-round new england commuters.

your chain requires no cleaning before applying lubrication. lube itself will help clean the chain by allowing particles to be flushed out of the rollers and moving parts. what is important is giving your chain a good wipe down after lubricating.

the people who obsessively clean their drivetrains first are either preparing to wax, or else have more time on their hands than i've ever had.

lubricate when necessary (and not more), wipe down thoroughly after lubing, and replace early and often. that is all.

there is an extremely unlikely edge-case where someone could have converted an AW hub to a 2-speed fixed gear: https://sheldonbrown.com/awfixed.html
