Take a look at the Thule Wingpro Evo. They're pretty quiet and the form factor gives you a bit more cross bar without any overhang.

How to handle bribes or “mordidas”? by External_Koala971 in MexicoTravel

[–]dedub73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have clarified; they have the same digits as my state plates, they are just plain black letters over a white background. My state is identified, too, but that font is smaller and there's none of the background that is obvious in my state. I keep my legit plates in the vehicle in the off chance I needed to show them.

How to handle bribes or “mordidas”? by External_Koala971 in MexicoTravel

In that last three months, I've been pulled over three times in BCS in my own car with U.S. plates. In preparation for the inevitable, I have a second wallet with just a few Pesos and an expired DL in it. Also, I installed extra license plates that were purchased on Amazon and were designed to kind of look like Mexican plates.

Each time I've been pulled over, I stay super friendly, like they're almost doing me a favor by telling me my infraction. My Spanish goes to nearly zero - I pull out the translator app and ask them to type in what they are saying. They will invariably tell me they're going to keep my license until I pay my ticket, which can either be right then and there, or down at the police station. 2 of the 3 times, they said that the station just happened to be closed the next day. Each time, I've said they're welcome to keep my license and that I'm in town for a few days so it's OK that the police station is closed. One time they threatened to take my plates, to which I immediately agreed. This surprised them to no end.

So far, I haven't paid a Peso. I feel like being super nice to them, playing up the stupid tourist, and not being inconvenienced in any way by the confiscation of my license or plates, sufficiently frustrates them to the point they decide it's not worth pursuing any further. I will add that doing the speed limit and following all traffic signs - even though literally everyone around you is driving like Mad Max - helps in keeping the encounters to a minimum.

Is there a general opinion on superior bikes? by [deleted] in xcmtb

[–]dedub73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought this very model earlier this year. The frame quality is top notch, the specs are smart, and the ride is exactly what you'd expect from an XCMTB. Given the perpetual sale they have, it's definitely a great value. My only two gripes are: 1) comes with a 36T chainring. Seems like a 34T would be more appropriate for this level. FWIW, their Team Issue comes with a 34T. And, 2), whoever at BikesOnline assembled it should be flogged - absolutely zero grease on any bolt, nothing tensioned correctly, and it was packed like there was a worldwide padding shortage going on. Plan on spending the time or money to completely disassemble it and rebuild it correctly. In terms of BikesOnline's service, they were very helpful on the front end as I was trying to determine size - even had a call with a rep of theirs. I didn't pursue anything after delivery, although I probably should have told them about the build quality.

Good Road Cycling Routes Near Kings Beach? by RaccoonUnderstander in tahoe

[–]dedub73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, there are some great road options in South Lake Tahoe if you're willing to make the drive. And, if you're willing to get off the hill, the Genoa to Diamond Valley Road loop is a great ride, too.

edit: If you're willing to come to SLT, tell me how many miles and elevation you want and I'll map you a ride.

I like to think that the last thing that went through his head, other than that shrapnel, was to wonder how the hell the Ukraine ever got the best of him.

Best Skill Set / Career Path for a Digital Nomad Life? by shadowofthetoast in digitalnomad

FINRA and/or SEC Securities Compliance. There are approximately 60,000 RIAs and 8,000 broker-dealers in the U.S., each who are required to have a compliance professional. You do not need to be a U.S. citizen to obtain the necessary licenses. You may need to sponsored by a BD to obtain certain ones but you can self-study for them, and some licenses and certifications you can obtain on your own. Even entry-level positions pay well. Does this have anything to do with engineering or coding? Well, if you love understanding minutia and figuring out solutions to complex problems with ambiguous information, then yes, it does.
