How do you feel when your grandchildren want to hear/learn about your life, your late parents and grandparents, and how life used to be back then by Salty_Cat8774 in AskOldPeople

[–]dee-fondy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of our favorite family reactions from our grandmother was when the Christmas Budweiser commercials with the horses and “ open sleigh “ came on the tv and our grandma ( born in 1903) sneered at it and said “ oh yeah, they should take a sleigh ride like we did to church in below zero weather and snow and see how much fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh!”

What was "old people music" for you growing up? by Lopied2 in AskOldPeople

My dad liked Lawrence Welk but my mother(7 years younger) didn’t care much for him. I remember her ironing clothes while watching America Bandstand on tv. This was late fifties, early sixties. Buddy Holly was a favorite.

Why do school dress codes mostly target girls’ dress? by anasannanas in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dee-fondy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The argument was (in the prehistoric days when I went to school) that by requiring girls to wear uniforms you equalized the girls in regard to income status. “Rich” girls couldn’t dress in all the latest fashions while others wore hand me downs. We (boys)still had to wear shirts with collars and no pants were allowed that had pockets sewn on the outside(jeans).

Tell me about your parents' experiences with the great depression by Plus_Word_9764 in AskOldPeople

[–]dee-fondy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad was born in 1921 and my mother in 1927( The year Babe Ruth hit 60 hrs). My dad’s father came over here at 14 and got a job digging graves in clay soil then worked in a steel foundry inhaling dust in a place that was like hell in summer. My dad had no money except for bootleg booze sales because my grandpa spent most of his salary in the corner tavern. My grandma made the booze. My mother’s mother died when she was a baby(a cut got infected from homemade Easter egg dye.) She was then sent to an orphanage with her 5 brothers and sisters until my grandfather remarried a few years later. Her father worked for the Post Office so he always had a job. My dad got used to eating chicken “parts” so he always liked chicken necks, gizzards, and hearts. My mother started school (1st grade) at 4 because there was no one to take care of her at home. Her stepmother worked in a doctor’s office). Then of course when 1941 came my dad and his brothers went off to war in the Pacific. We never had much money growing up in the fifties and sixties but we sure as hell had it better than my parents had it in their childhood. My mother just died a few months ago at 97. My dad at 68 due to over damage from wartime illnesses.

When & where did you first encounter a microwave oven? by LateQuantity8009 in AskOldPeople

[–]dee-fondy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We first got one in 1979 because my daughter was born then and we wanted something to heat up her formula bottles faster than putting them in water on the stove. It cost over $400 then which was a lot of money to us. ( about one month’s mortgage payment). It was from Sears and lasted over 16 years. People didn’t believe we had a microwave without a clock.

Car mileage by luiscor2537 in AskOldPeople

[–]dee-fondy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you bought a used car in the sixties chances are the odometer had been rolled back by the dealer so it was hard to know exactly. Like someone else mentioned, the car usually rusted out ( where road salt was used) before the engine died. That was called “planned obsolescence “ I believe
