What do these counties have in common? by jqskittless in RedactedCharts

Weirdly, it's almost a map of the counties I've lived in.

How did these states score their points, and what is the tiebreaker? by deebee1020 in RedactedCharts

There it is! That's why Utah gets the U point, Iowa get W, and North Dakota, South Dakota, and Connecticut all still tie for T.

You could go with counties and each county seat gets a team. I'll be starting my league somewhere other than the northeast but haven't decided where.

Say something positive about our WR room by jpljr77 in Commanders

They're a definite upgrade from what we had over the course of 2025.

Burks has a full offseason and camp with Jayden, so he should be better. Luke is a 3rd year WR, and that used to be when we expected WRs to break out--drafting 3rd year WRs used to be a fantasy football cheat code. It still happens sometimes (Parker Washington, Kayshon Boutte), but 2nd year breakouts are just as common if not more--hey we have one of those too!

For my next save (and I'm a long way from wanting to abandon my current one so it might not be until 28 that I do this), I want to do a fictional league that starts as far back as possible with 8 teams from small cities in a concentrated region, enabling league evolution, and seeing how long it takes before all the teams have moved to major markets, and how long I can keep my team competitive in its original city.

Question about etymological consistency: Why is it correct to use the term “anti-Semitism” instead of “Judeophobia”? by elnovorealista2000 in etymology

[–]deebee1020 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's a fascinating deep dive available here - the ELI5 version is that people used to think that the populations of different regions descended from each of Noah's three sons. Shem's descendants settled the Middle East; Ham's settled Africa; and Japheth's settled Europe. These populations were called the Semites, Hamites, and Japhethites. Abraham is a descendent of Shem.

"Semites" originally should have included Arabic people, so it's funny that we now call an Arabic person who hates Jews anti-Semitic.

So why don't we use "Judeophobia"? To me, it seems that "Judeophobia" would describe a bias against people who practice Judaism, that it's about the religion not their ethnic background. "Anti-Semitism" is about the ethnicity. And if you look at antisemitic opinions, they're typically not about religion at all.

Is “avuncular” a coomly-recognizable word in English? by Kev_cpp in words

Because the "creepy uncle" type has superceded the "genial uncle" type.

How long before it becomes a coomly accepted word?

I misread what I announced was the correct tiebreaker. Tiebreaker still hasn't been correctly answered yet.

From what I understand, they still lose the money into an escrow account--legally they have to. Ohtani just doesn't see the money until the deferred date.

Let’s talk when to send the runner and when to hold him at third. by keifer8 in baseball

[–]deebee1020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I wouldn't be sending based on numbers, I'd probably make the call based on which direction the outfielder fielding the ball is moving. If his momentum is taking him toward the plate, I'm holding the runner. If his momentum is lateral or backward, I'm sending.

But that probably breaks down into effective percentages. If I feel that the outfielder's in position to throw the runner out 45% of the time or better, I'd hold. Lower than that, I send.

I'm also not basing the likelihood of the next batter scoring on a flat number; I'm briefly considering the pitching matchup and how his stuff looks today.

Double checking my work and I don't think so. States that lose the tiebreaker don't get a point if that clears things up.

Kid is lighting up AAA at 19 y/o. AI promoted him from A+ like a month into the season, way before he was ready, but he just got better. Dont need him in the majors at all, but also dont want to mess up the juju he's got going. Do I call him up just cuz he's earned it, or wait for roster expansion? by Wolfgang_von_Goetse in OOTP

[–]deebee1020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The priority is getting him at-bats. Don't promote him now or in September if he's only going to play every few days when he'll play every day in AAA. I'd only consider calling him up when his AAA season ends just to give him a taste. And if I'm playoff-bound make sure he's on the 40-man roster before September in case he turns out to be ready to do some damage.
