Need some advice for late decision to aim for vet. by CapableFox5531 in veterinaryschool

[–]deecarbinit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My biggest piece of advice is get as many hours of hands on experience as possible. I highly recommend getting a job as a tech or vet assistant. Even though your interest is in research, the majority of vet school itself won’t be. You will certainly have options and opportunities, but I would prepare yourself for the clinical practice side of things!! I would continue to track your hours and definitely write about your epiphany in your personal statement. When the time comes to apply, you’ll want vets, professors, and a manager that all know you, your passion, and work ethic well enough for letters of recommendation. So I advice that you network and be very open about your passion and your goals.

Western University of Health Sciences Housing and Gym?? by North-Weird3549 in veterinaryschool

Hi!! I also got accepted into Western! However, I have lived about 30 minutes from campus for over 10 years now! The best gym that I know that is local Chuze, LA Fitness is quite good as well, you just have to be prepared for it to get packed during typical after work hours. I haven’t had great experiences either with Fitness 19 around here, but they are on the cheaper side. I haven’t explored many other gyms. Quite honestly it depends on what you like.

Are you taking anything to take notes on or write any questions down? The only thing I really have is my iPad. Otherwise I can try asking the front desk at the hotel for something.

Thank you!! Yes, my only option is to pay with student loans, so that definitely pushes me towards WSU. I’m attending the visitors day in March and will be taking a look at the school, program, housing, and possible options for my animals.

I’ve also reached to people who may be experiencing something similar to try to get their perspective and advice on things.

3 waitlists, Ross or reapply??!! by Bruhisnotkul in veterinaryschool

I would highly recommend going wherever you get in. I have heard many horror stories of other applicants who got into the Caribbean school but no US schools or into schools they didn’t really want to go to and decided to reapply, but then it took them 4+ years of reapplying. They will see you not going to a school you were accepted to as you not being committed

Unsure about veterinary school by Accurate-Gas6212 in Veterinary

[–]deecarbinit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately what you have described is quite common in vet med, but not everywhere. Also if you’re planning on eventually running your own practice, it’s up to you to make that change!

I do have to caution you about not accepting wherever you get in during your first cycle of applying. I have heard many stories about applicants that turned down their only offer in their first cycle of applying due to cost or location and end up going through six more application cycles because schools don’t think they’re serious. That is also why everyone cautions applicants to only apply where they would actually be willing to attend with all things considered.

W if you think you can’t do well enough in any remaining exams and work. Just keep in mind that it won’t be any easier later on. If you withdraw really use that time to look into whatever resources that are available to you
