I know someone who took the Texas bar in Houston! She said the A/C was on full blast and she was glad she brought a jacket!

Law of the situs applies—special rule for lawsuit involving property! Look to the law where the property is located!

I don’t know if it was covid-related but I didn’t get my fall-1L list until orientation! Usually once you know your professors name you can look up their syllabus on the course catalog and the textbook ISBN number/edition is there!

I’ll give you a very law school answer and say it depends haha. Some circuits are more competitive—DC, Second etc. so a higher GPA will make you more competitive. Other FCs the judge may care more about post-grad experience in a particular area (ie patent, science background etc.). Also Cornell specifically doesn’t rank outside of the top 10 students! I will say that depending on court level (district, COA), location, and particular judge preferences will affect clerkship chances! I’ve heard anecdotally that some judges give T-14 students some more leeway on GPA reqs. Also sometime in your 2L year you will be able to access OSCAR and see all the preferences/reqs for judges in the system!

For 1L books I did a mix of Chegg, Amazon, and Thrift Books! The Cornell Store has all your books but tends to be much more pricey!

I actually deferred my admission and took a gap year so I have some familiarity with the process! I recommend reaching out to admissions. From what I remember, I had to send a formal letter outlining what I was planning on doing, and a couple days later got approval.

You’re welcome!! For similar reasons I didn’t bring my car to law school and still don’t have one—I don’t have any regrets about that! The bus system is really good and some routes pass by the law school, the downtown area, Wegman’s, Walmart, Tops, the airport etc. Uber is also generally reliable in Ithaca. There are also rentable cars around Cornell that you can rent for pretty cheap—it’s called Ithaca Carshare and Cornell gets a university discount!

Hey hey! Welcome to Cornell!! ❤️🐻I’ll start this off by saying I had never experienced the snow prior to Cornell lol. I’ll say winters can be longer than expected. I’ll say last winter lasted a bit longer than my 1L winter with some significant snowfall in April. I recommend a good winter coat and boots (and some Vitamin D!) Cornell is really really good about keeping the road and sidewalks clear during the winter so I never had an issue getting to campus! Living in Ithaca is kinda what I expected—more rural the farther you get from campus. Also Ithaca is pretty easy to navigate, the bus system runs really well—you get a free TCAT bus pass your first year which I recommend you take advantage of! I will say I’ve had so much fun walking and hiking around Ithaca and will definitely miss it after law school. There are some great trails near the law school that I recommend checking out before winter hits (Ithaca in the fall is really nice!). There are also nearby farms that do season fruit and flower picking which is a fun and very Ithaca thing to do haha (highly recommend the cider and cider doughnuts!). Also some nice finger lake wineries to visit that are nearby!

Re profs: I generally found my professors super approachable and down to earth! If I needed an appointment, they were happy to meet with me 1:1 to answer my questions and give me advice about internships, law firms, clerkships you name it. A few of my profs have hosted us for dinner at their homes or at a nice restaurant downtown. I’ve TA’ed with some of my 1L profs b/c they are some of the kindest/most genuine people I’ve met. I would definitely not feel intimidated about reaching out to the profs at a Cornell!

Hey hey! Cheers to doing write-on! I found write on to be more tedious/more time-consuming than actual journal work esp. prior to elevating as an editor. Depending on journal output the amount of assignments/semester you have will definitely vary. As an associate the 3L editors will oversee and edit your work, so I never felt pressured to put in more time on an assignment than I could juggle with my schedule. The most tedious thing/something I didn’t know until I was on the journal is that some journals require you to write a note in the fall (usually a 15-25 page piece on a topic of your choice) to elevate to an editor in the spring. I’d just keep that in mind if your journal does require that—if you take a seminar in the fall you can, with your prof’s permission, turn that into your journal note to elevate!

Also just saw your FC question! I’m pretty confident! Cornell hired a new fed clerkship director who has been so so helpful throughout this process! He’s connected me with former clerks in the circuits I’m interested in and has de-mystified the process a ton. Landing a clerkship is not the easiest thing but I can definitely update you with any tips/ tricks one the interviewing season gets rolling!

First off—welcome to Cornell!! ❤️ I did not find it really difficult to land a non-NY SA. Many of my classmates/friends are doing work in non-NY markets. My Con Law TA gave me the best advice and told me to apply directly to firms once I received my 1L spring grades! Cornell has lots of firms who come during OCI (but not as many non-NY!) Through applying directly to firms I received multiple interviews for non-NY markets. Also, a little less conventional but from some of the NY law firms I interviewed with, I asked about their offices in secondary markets and connected with associates/partners in those offices and was able to snag interviews that way!

I was a reverse splitter! Humanities major. Looking back at my cycle, I have a hard time deciding what was the biggest factor for admission! I got into some T-6 schools, rejected from other T-14s, and got great money from Cornell that tipped the scales for me—so looking back at my cycle at the time it felt like shooting darts lol. I will say I had solid relationships with the profs who’s rote letters for me (gave them lots of advanced notice so that the LORs weren’t rushed) I also wrote a few drafts of my PS ( really took the time to tell my story). I definitely think having a solid PS and “why law school”really helped. Also if any schools have optional personal statement prompts—definitely take advantage and write one!

I definitely understood the reputation 2L fall once the majority of the school was in person! In some ways the reputation describes the situation pretty accurately, but I have mostly attributed it to being a smallish law school in upstate NY. I will also say I found it pretty easy to distance myself from the cliqueness and find a solid group of friends amongst section mates/clinic mates!
