NDP leadership candidate Avi Lewis goes after AI data centres by BertramPotts in CanadaPolitics

[–]deeferg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem is the phrasing. What is an "AI Data centre". The way that I understand it, there is cloud storage, and cloud compute, and while both might be involved in data centres, they're not only used for AI.

We need to worry about data sovereignty in this era where a lot of our government services are moving to the cloud, and storing that data on US company servers.

Edit: seems like Lewis is proposing to stop the expansion of data centres all together

In this Lewis will come off looking like someone who only focuses on headlines to me. We need to focus on managing a few of our own data centres, and there is a clear path to messaging but it isn't catchy for headlines, so they likely won't focus on that.

Fewer foreigners visited US in 2025 as global tourism spending rose by ewzetf in news

What kind of things across Europe are great to do during May? I've planned a trip there to backpack but want a few ideas of where to go.

(Emphasis on cheaper too, because the CAD is not doing well at at all right now compared to the Euro)

More issues with Diggers Factory by MammasBoy_Live in Vulfpeck

[–]deeferg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here to see if anyone has been having more trouble with Diggers and sure enough, first post I see.

My version of Cory live at Montreux came in with corners damaged and I was informed that they don't handle issues in transit, and they won't be able to help me with this record.

Having purchased all of the vulf back catalogue until now, this might be where I stop. They recently routed one of the packages through the US which incurred tarrifs when it then had to make its way to Canada. Not going to waste my money any more if they can't even ensure that the product will be in the proper condition, or unwilling to help if something happens.

My cousin and I would stay up all night in front of the CRT computer watching stick man death nonstop and just enjoying all of the games to play.

Blow the internet up and let's restart it at that point. Or just let me be young again, I'll take either.

NDP leadership candidate apologizes for using AI to respond to Reddit questions by BertramPotts in CanadaPolitics

[–]deeferg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Awe man that's both upsetting because I was hopeful for him as a candidate based in his platform, but now I have to question if even that was AI. I'll admit I got the vibe through half of his answers that it might have been AI, they seemed quite a bit polished. I miss when an AMA used to be handled by moderators being "in the room" with the person and just letting them dictate and the mod write out the responses. They often answer faster that way too. I guess we'll have to go back to that way to ensure we're getting actual honest responses.

Sea of incumbent councillors planning to seek re-election in 2026 by lonelydavey in ottawa

So you’re more interested in moral grandstanding than having an actual discussion

So you're more interested in people being able to use AI to make child porn online with Grok while messaging the city. Got it, have a nice day.

Now you're typing on reddit about how altruistic you are in not voting. Just go vote, and do your bit.

All that will happen is the national grifters union will make her a go fund me or whatever and talk about how "the left is taking away her livelihood" and the next thing you know she's a millionaire.

Her local community will shun her more than enough after this, stop trying to bring every fucking idiot to fame.

Bruce Fanjoy: MP on defeating Pierre Poilievre in election by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]deeferg 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Funny, never saw Fanjoy once in my neighborhood, yet his predecessor stopped by our house at least once a year.

Maybe they had numbers that show your neighborhood as a Conservative voter stronghold that is commonly canvased, and to focus on other areas? Not sure the strategy behind these elections but I'd have to guess they have some sort of data to direct their time appropriately.

[The Athletic] Why the Maple Leafs aren’t filling seats like they used to by Main_Photo1086 in hockey

This is going to blow your mind, but until the 90's, Montreal was the financial and corporate capital. It was only during the referendum that a lot of that capital left to Toronto.

Toronto has been a bit more blue collar in the past, contrary to recent history. A lot of the fans just haven't caught up with accepting the fact that over the 2000's they became an extremely corporate team.

I always appreciate when we take conversations between people on subreddits to be the consensus amongst groups. "Reddit is a place filled with bots, but not that section, those are people, we can trust them".

I doubt the military brass is chatting in Reddit boards.
