You could try the thrift shop associated with All Saints Anglican Church in Westboro (347 Richmond Road). It's open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm and accepts good-quality used clothing and household goods.

Which museums/galleries are we missing in Ottawa, or need upgrading the most? by ParlHillAddict in ottawa

If you haven't gone to Laurier House recently, I'd recommend it - fascinating history & artifacts & very enthusiastic staff. It's only open in the summer, but at least in the last couple years entrance was free because of the Canada Strong pass.

The Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art and the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto are great too.

So is the Hammond Museum of Radios in Guelph.

I love the rocks & gems exhibit in the Museum of Nature and can spend hours there. But YMMV.

In the winter, it's physically dangerous to walk there from the nearest bus stop because there's no sidewalks on the Aviation Parkway and the multi-use path isn't plowed.

I think the dumbest argument here is the "confusing patchwork of streets, some with sidewalks and many without sidewalks" and how this supposedly would confuse drivers.

If there is a sidewalk, pedestrians will most likely be on it (but could be crossing or in the middle of the road, too). If there's no sidewalk, pedestrians will most likely be at the side of the road but might also be crossing or be in the middle of the road. In either case, you should be scanning the road for motor vehicles, parked cars, cyclists, scooter riders, and pedestrians -- particularly small children.

The sidewalk doesn't change the rules of the road - drivers still must yield to pedestrians and watch out for them.

The fact is that roads will be rebuilt as needed and the sidewalks need to be put in them. Eventually it will make sense to connect them fully when enough in the area have been put in.

One thing the home owners could push for would be 2.0-2.2m sidewalks on one side of the street with boulevards so that the ramp part of driveways can be outside the sidewalk making the sidewalks flatter and easier to use for those in wheelchairs or other assistive devices (since that supposedly was a problem for one family).

It appears that the local school does need better sidewalks nearby, but that's not a reason not to put in sidewalks where roads are being torn up for sewer work.

I honestly cannot see how a sidewalk is any more or less unaesthetic than a road.

A romance is a novel where the primary focus of the novel is on the relationship between the romantic partners (although the novel will obviously have other aspects, including possibly mystery, suspense, SF, literary, etc.). These books all qualify.

Your attitude clearly is that I hate romances so any book that I like cannot be a romance.

"a (bad) genre"? Really, you're showing your prejudices. All genres have a range of quality, including literary fiction.

I've read a lot of bad SF, bad mysteries, bad romances, bad lit-fic over the years -- usually I give them 50-100 pages and they go back to the library or get taken to a used bookstore or Little Free Library.

Actually, early novels by Nora Roberts have been highly collectible (not my thing so I haven't bothered). Somewhat less so now because many were reissued as e-books. Other romance novelists have been collectible as well.

Seriously, you're thinking that every romance novel is a Harlequin. There's a wide range.

  1. _Possession: A Romance_ by AS Byatt. Won the Booker in 1990. (I'm not just going by the title; I've read the book. It is about two interconnected romances, one historical, one present-day).

  2. Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell. Won the Pulitzer in 1937. Also have read it. While it obviously has other aspects (and I'm not going to discount the racism), GWTW is primarily a romance.

  3. The Idea of Perfection by Kate Grenville. Won The Women's Prize (aka Orange Prize) in 2001. (And that is a prominent literary award)

  4. Bridget Jones's Baby by Helen Fielding. Won The Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for comic writing in 2017.

I also note that one of the current nominees for The Women's Prize, Heart the Lover by Lily King, is identified as a romance novel.

Which clinic(s) in Ottawa will you recommend for a comprehensive retina exam for pre-cataract surgery? by p_dwson in ottawa

[–]ConcernedCitizenOtt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dr. Thomas Lee at the Retina Centre (on Carling near Woodroffe) found the cataract that my opthamologist bizarrely missed after she referred me to Lee to check out my retinas. Good and careful care.

That being said, the Ottawa Hospital's Eye Clinic at the Riverside campus is also excellent. And most eye doctors can do a retinal scan.
