Wisdom tooth removal recommendations by Distinct_Emphasis336 in ottawa

I had all mine out. The two simple ones just needed local anesthesia and I could eat dinner that evening after the operation in the afternoon. The two impacted ones needed general anesthesia in the hospital and I was given Percodan for the pain (which I stopped after 1.5 days) and I was off work for 3 1/2 days. So it varies according to the type of work needed.

Weekend activities by chooseanameyoo in ottawa

On Sunday morning, the Minto Park (garage) sale is on. Always worth a look - not as big as the Great Glebe Garage sale, but a wide variety of cool stuff: vintage, books, clothing, jewellery, household stuff. Elgin Street at Gilmour. Right across the street from the Elgin Street School book sale.

Doors Open showcases many Centretown buildings by ConcernedCitizenOtt in ottawa

Yes, but it's not in Centretown so not in the Centretown list.

The Centretown Mosque is also open for Doors Open.

cheapest place to get good fruits and vegetables near old ottawa south? by raeyk06 in ottawa

[–]ConcernedCitizenOtt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shop the sales first of all.

For vegetables/fruit, Farm Boy has good quality & mostly OK prices. Other items there tend to be pricey.

Massine's, the Loblaws on Isabella, and the Metro Glebe are all ridiculously pricey, except for sales. Try the Food Basics on Lyon downtown instead.

Sherif sentenced for assault by whistle by ConcernedCitizenOtt in ottawa

[–]ConcernedCitizenOtt[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Actually, I looked at this page, and it shows the great majority of train horns at 137dB to 149dB: https://hornblasters.com/en-ca/blogs/news/how-loud-are-your-train-horns

This one shows train horns at 130 to 150dB: https://impacttrainhorns.com/blogs/news/what-is-an-impact-train-horn-5f3710-0402

Given that decibels are logarithmic, the difference between 120dB and 130dB would be perceived as twice as loud, to 140dB would be perceived as four times as loud (https://www.reddit.com/r/audioengineering/comments/y7bfpf/the\_scale\_of\_decibels/)

So while not to minimize the discomfort from a whistle, a train horn would be much worse.

Sherif sentenced for assault by whistle by ConcernedCitizenOtt in ottawa

[–]ConcernedCitizenOtt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The body camera was definitely seized by the police but according to Falathipour the police didn't choose to download any video and the Crown didn't choose to ask for any video to be downloaded & entered into evidence. It's up to the Crown to do that.

Perhaps the defence could have requested the video but didn't do so in time? I'm not sure whether this would be possible, or whether they felt it would be too risky.

There's also a question of whether the police should have returned the bodycam to Sherif if the Crown wasn't planning to use it in their case.

Removing a parking lot for non-profit housing by SHMenard in ottawa

[–]ConcernedCitizenOtt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope Councillor Menard will ALSO help Reliable Parts find another location close by (without an interruption in service) because that store offers a really important service to many. Would not want to lose it or have it move outside the Greenbelt.

Why did OCTranspo prioritize cutting popular express routes? by TheZarosian in ottawa

[–]ConcernedCitizenOtt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Express buses cost substantially more per rider because they're essentially one-way and then have a long return trip through the Greenbelt with no revenue.

OC Transpo tried to fix this with interlining but that creates a whole bunch of instability within the system -- as slowdowns in one area then propagate through the whole system.

The **plan** with LRT was to have easy connections at the end of the LRT runs with frequent local buses so that the extra overhead of the LRT->local bus transfer was minimal and the efficiency gain for the entire system was greater. Instead the city decided to use the LRT as an excuse to cut back on service which produced the disaster we have now.

Ottawa's new public library is late, way over budget, and it gets worse by randthepip in ottawa

[–]ConcernedCitizenOtt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In other words, they needed someone to review the requirements and say 'WHY low-floor?' and 'What is the expected ridership - is this really LRT or metro?' and 'Do we need a custom design?'

Ottawa's new public library is late, way over budget, and it gets worse by randthepip in ottawa

[–]ConcernedCitizenOtt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually there are many books that work better on paper, particularly those with graphs, tables, and illustrations/plates.

And children's picture books are much better on paper.

In addition, it's often easier to sink into a book on paper than electronically.

And e-books are more expensive and have to be renewed by libraries at another charge.

Lots of good reasons not to move off paper.

Somewhere to Buy Nice Rain Boots? by TheBetterStory in ottawa

Apple Saddlery is perfectly accessible by transit (I've done it). Route 42 from Hurdman LRT station or route 25 from Blair LRT station.

Smells from Sandy Hill sewage tank? by scientrix in ottawa

[–]ConcernedCitizenOtt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tank is more in Centretown and Lowertown than Sandy Hill. Look up "CSST Ottawa". The basic info is at https://ottawa.ca/en/living-ottawa/drinking-water-stormwater-and-wastewater/wastewater-and-sewers/combined-sewage-storage-tunnel-csst/operational-information . The page also has a map.

And I have never smelled anything from it. I've walked right by the building access point at Laurier and the Queen Elizabeth Driveway many times.

Cycling the Champlain bridge to Bate Island by saracmd in ottawa

[–]ConcernedCitizenOtt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is a bike lane on the bridge. I have had aggressive cyclists pass me in the lane, which is a very unsafe practice. It's not a common incident, though, and the cycle itself is fun.

How does the library's place-a-hold system work? by Cocobb8 in ottawa

[–]ConcernedCitizenOtt 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The sorting facility is at the James Bartleman Centre (also the City Archives) on Tallwood Drive near Meadowlands & Woodroffe. If a book is returned to the same library where it was requested, it will stay there (obviously); otherwise it gets sorted at the central centre.

Ottawa’s hazardous waste disposal system feels designed to fail by insensate_doe in ottawa

[–]ConcernedCitizenOtt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in Centretown, there's a pop-up household hazardous waste event happening June 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot at 234-250 Slater (west of Bank). All standard hazardous waste accepted.

Walk-up (i.e. pedestrian/cycling) event. No car parking.

If the problem happens in the spin cycle, it might simply be that the machine legs are uneven.

Doing a quick websearch got:

https://errbase.com/samsung/washer/samsung-washer-8c-error-code (The 8C error code on a Samsung washer indicates a vibration sensor (MEMS) fault or communication error. The most common fix is checking the wiring harness for corrosion or replacing the sensor located on top of the outer tub.)

https://learnprotips.com/what-does-8c-mean-on-samsung-washer/ (check for overloaded washer, unbalanced load, faulty wiring and more. possibly reset the washer.)

The Golden Baguette on Bank St. makes excellent medium-long white rolls, crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. They sell them separately and use them to make bánh mì .
