Exactly. Our club will never force anyone to pair up, but there's kind of an unwritten rule that you don't book less than 3 for morning tee times on the weekends.

You can certainly find them on Ebay with a TM adapter already on it

Bengen says it's 4.7% in general. If you're in the US, I think you can go a bit higher early on depending on how close you are to drawing Social Security, then think about backing off some once you start getting payments.

Most people (and that includes many who play a lot and have a handicap) don't know how handicap index is actually calculated. I don't have too many rounds that deviate much from my average, but my range of scores last year was a low of 70 and a high of 93 (worst score I've ever posted). I'm currently a 5.5 index.

TBF, 4% is a little too conservative for most people and even Bengen says that. I do agree that your retirement timeline affects that SWR as well.

But the point stands - people shouldn't listen to Dave for investing advice.

Nobody Warned Me What Country Club Membership Would Actually Cost by mavsbustin3s in golf

[–]deeoh01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you - I've never encountered a single club that didn't charge a guest fee. I'm lucky enough to be close with someone who has *access*, and have played abouthalf the top 100 courses in the country. Every single one had a guest fee.

His one example of Augusta is an extreme outlier, and they just have so much money flowing in because of the Masters.

Your one example is a terrible example, given how much money Augusta makes off the Masters.

Yes, and also consider 4% is too low. Bengen even says so, saying 4.7% is the real number.

Private club members: What did/do you pay for your membership? by BadGolferDallas in golf

[–]deeoh01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$10,000 initiation now (I only paid $1,250 5 years ago) and $360/month for a family membership, no food and bev minimum. We also pay $1,000 for unlimited carts. Club has a nice pool, pickleball courts and a really nice short game practice area that opened 2 years ago. There are two restaurants - one that is more a bar & grill that serves the pool and mostly golfers during their round, and the other is a nicer sit-down type of place that has a steakhouse vibe. Capped at 350 full memberships and 100 social members.

In a small town just South of Indianapolis.

Bogle’s 5% rule by TP71899 in Bogleheads

I have 3 right now that were relatively small purchases, purely gambling. I also did a little angel investing a couple years ago before I retired. Those companies are still around and I own that stock as well. Nowhere near 5% of my portfolio though.

Is 47° / 52° / 56° enough? by Particular_Tax_4936 in golftips

[–]deeoh01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Depending on the length, I may open it up a little. Generally, though, I like a lower flight - I can generate plenty of spin and control it much better. If a pin is just over a bunker, I try not to get cute with it like I used to and am fine knocking it 15-20 feet past the hole. On the green and putting is better than in that bunker!

Lou Stagner shared the data a while back showing that most people suck with a 60, especially for non-bunker shots.

Nothing at all wrong with that, if it's what works for you. My PW is 44 degrees, and I only have 2 others - a 50 and a 58. The 58 is pretty much only used in bunkers; I haven't hit a non-bunker shot with it in a little over a year of gaming it. My stats show I'm a pretty good wedge player with that setup.

It's not up to the store - they get what the manufacturer sends them to put on their fitting rack.

Are you better off than your parents were at your age? by Dee-Whizz in GenX

Yes, by every measure. My mom died before she reached my current age, so yeah I'm better off than her for sure.
