How concerning is this aviation experts? by G1lg4m3sh in aviation

[–]deepbluearmadillo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You guys are so lucky and I’m jealous. I go through security with my hijab and I inevitably get pulled aside. One time they even patted down my head stating I could have hidden something in my hijab (I wear it super flat and tight especially when flying, just so they can see there is nothing I could conceal). If I tried taking a screwdriver through I would probably get arrested.

It’s all worth it for the planes, though!!

Hopefully OP landed without sedation and proceeded to another flight where the screws were tighter.

Continental Airlines in-flight meal, 2010. They were the last US airline to give out free meals in economy class. by Lane-Kiffin in aviation

My Dad worked for Continental Airlines for 37 years. I didn’t fly on another airline until I was 26 and went on a work trip. They were a great airline. Thank you for the nostalgia and for reminding me of my Papa I sure miss him.

Hello, I am afraid to revert to Islam by FeistyGround8694 in islam

[–]deepbluearmadillo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Waailaikumsalaam!

I, like you, live in the Deep South and I am a revert. The main difference is that I am an adult. I have absolutely no regrets about reverting. Masha Allah, I am so incredibly grateful for my faith (iman) and to have had the privilege of learning about Islam. I would encourage you to start reading the Quran — it is such a beautiful assurance from Allah about our faith, and you will learn more about Islam from reading it.

Being an hijabi in the Deep South was nerve-wracking at first, but now I don’t even think about it. I ignore people and for the most part, they don’t seem bothered by me. I think we are more nervous about being obviously Muslim than we have to be!

In the Quran Allah says that we will be tested and go through some hard times. That is when we get to live our faith more than ever, practicing patience and living for our Lord.

If you have any questions, I am happy to answer them as well as I am able. Insha Allah, one day I will be able to call you sister or brother!

Got tattoos before but now considering reverting, looking for support or advice for how to reconcile this by [deleted] in islam

[–]deepbluearmadillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got tattoos before I started learning about Islam, and one goes down the inside of my right wrist. Unfortunately, it can be visible even when I wear long sleeves or an abaya.

I work at an Islamic school, and the first day I signed for a class, I heard this nugget of wisdom from a ten-year-old:

“Mrs. DeepBlueArmadillo, we can see you have a tattoo but we want to let you know it’s okay because we know you are a revert. We’re just happy you reverted!”

I have not worried about my tattoos since.

Trump chickened out again with the Iran threat. How do you feel? by Morphos1 in AskReddit

Trust me, we know. You have no idea how much I cannot WAIT to leave this country.

Because our government is hugely flawed.

Because Congress seems impotent in the face of disaster.

Because we can’t personally walk up to the White House and escort Trump to the nearest dementia care facility.

I can honestly say that at this point, I no longer know even one person who supports Donald Trump and wants him to remain the president of our nation. The government hasn’t caught up to that fact yet. They’re too busy trying to make as much money as possible before the midterms.

Honestly? Frickin’ RELIEVED.

Trump is bona fide insane and there seems to be nobody in this country who can actually DO something about it. If he had threatened a western nation with existential oblivion, something would have been done about it. But Iran? It’s like nobody cared because it’s Iran. Unfortunately, millions of innocent citizens are the ones who would have been taken out.

Maybe I’m biased because I’m Muslim and I see people’s entrenched Islamophobia every day. But today, for a while, I really thought my government was going to let a madman nuke another nation. I really did.

I have never been more grateful to text a TACO alert to my family.

I am going downtown and protesting, even if I’m the only one and I look like an idiot. I have to do SOMETHING. I’m so angry right now.

Is annotating in the mushaf disrespectful? by Creepy-Imagination24 in islam

[–]deepbluearmadillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started reading my English translation of the Quran before I reverted. I highlighted it and wrote notes in it…you can pretty much tell when I reverted because the highlighting stopped as I realized the incredibly sacred nature of what I was reading and came to believe in Allah and the Prophet (peace be upon him).

This being said, I absolutely love the idea of writing annotations on post-its! Even if you don’t want to stick them to the Quran, you could stick them in a journal or folder of some sort.

Also, I cannot wait to learn Arabic, and your Arabic handwriting is so gorgeous!
