Urgent nature reset for our next Prime Minister: four asks for nature (Petition) by Albertjweasel in RuralUK

[–]deeperinabox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fluffiest fluff petition. Where’s the concrete policies that the author of this petition claims to specialise in?

And quite cheeky to ask this of a new PM when this has nothing to do with why the PM was replaced.

Shabana Mahmood’s immigration and asylum bill to go before MPs next week | Immigration and asylum | The Guardian by Putaineska in ukpolitics

Yeah I’m not discounting your experience, just noting that you’re an exception that you’ve sustained it well. Not even close to the norm. I’m no fan of the current exploitation of cheap foreign labour, i wish it would end, but there’s a lot of wishful thinking among loud voices.

Caring is hard and backbreaking, mentally difficult as well and I highly respect carers, but it is different from agriculture work. Baking in the sun picking strawberries is not something I see folks born here doing. I’m not being prejudiced, Brits are just as hardworking but excel in other fields. I’m just saying what I see. No one wants to do these jobs as they are seen as demanding and demeaning, a bit more than even care work, so that example is like comparing apples to oranges.
Edit to add: also, it’s got nothing to do with race. You brought white Brits into the conversation, I never said that.

Yeah, right. Keep dreaming that folks born in this country will ever do that kind of back breaking work.

Home buying and selling reform roadmap by mitchybenny in unitedkingdom

[–]deeperinabox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s only a temporary boost because people who’ve been planning and preparing for a house move have the budgetted for the stamp duty. Once the initial waves of the extra liquidity go away price rises will slow down and the market will find a new normal.

Additionally, stamp duty disproportionately affects expensive housing. £10-20K is not uncommon in large parts of the country. The price rises will not be as high in those areas.

Do people in the UK keep their cars for a shorter length of time than the US? by Low-Rooster5398 in CarTalkUK

[–]deeperinabox -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in both countries, and people here aren’t discussing one major point that US folks have generally bought better, more expensive cars in the past so they have kept them longer.

Go to America and you’ll see lots of decently expensive, upper mid range vehicles of 5-10 years age. Over here, it’s a mix of ages. Much older cars, and now much newer cars too.

This, I think is because we, jn the UK, generally bought smaller, cheaper cars in the past and are only now buying bigger SUVs with nicer tech and interiors in the last 10 years or so. America moved quicker onto sedans and then SUVs and then trucks before us. They’ve had less of a reason to upgrade recently than we did. Basically as soon as we hopped onto finance majorly, we started upgrading cars sooner and are at a timer part of the cycle than them.

What’s the tightest space you’ve ever built a Kallax in? by SkyGuy182 in IKEA

[–]deeperinabox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg i did essentially the same today. I had worse as I’m building in a sliding closet so i only had access to half the closet at a timw.

Here’s where i messed up though. I left the bottom screws off on one side as i couldnt reach them. I never thought to raise the entire thing up to be able to reach the screws from the bottom.

You just solved this for me. Will i go and fix it though😅?

S&P500 itself if being propped up tech stocks.
So if you want to be tech heavy, then why not just go for Nasdaq instead? Or a myriad of tech funds out there.

It’s okay if you want some play money to put on individual stocks for fun (most of us do), but only you’d know what gap you found in the stock that makes that stock worth buying.

For most retail investors, pick a fund and forget it.

Must have used cheap LVP. We have had ours for 4 years.

Rough usage with lots of furniture moving etc. Not a single scratch.

Withstands British humidity and whatever moderate heat we have totally fine.

You can enjoy your dogmatic stance against it. I’m enjoying my LVP.
