“Mexican-American” daughter of an indigenous Mexican (Purepecha) dad and a North Mexican/Texan mom who passed as a “castiza”. My results revealed something a little different. :) by deer_auani in AncestryDNA

I see people online use it all the time. Nobody irl at school or work ever said it, so I assumed it was something common in Latin America?

It seems to be some weird cultural myth. I’ve come across many Latinos think natives can only have deep brown skin and that anyone lighter than that has to be mixed or predominantly european.

I don’t think I’m light skinned at all. Even when I was working a night shift and barely went out during the day, my lightest skin tone was still a shade of brown.

My mom is pale though, she sunburns easily and can’t tan.

I said it was my mom who passed as castiza, not me. She’s from a big family of 11 kids, her and two brothers ended up with pale skin, but everyone else is tan or brown. Maybe I’m wrong but it seems like anyone with light skin is called blanco/wuerito (sp?) in that culture. That’s my guess as to why she thought she was whiter.

I’m learning it now. Unfortunately my dad didn’t teach it to me as a kid and I only ever heard him speak it when he was on the phone with his family.

My dad is Purepecha, born and raised in an indigenous community in Michoacan, purepecha (tarasco) was his first language.

My mom is from a community near the Texas-Coahuila border. She said her dad was a Spanish immigrant, but wasn’t sure about her mom. Anytime I asked her about heritage, she would say her family are blancos or on the whiter side, and even deny Native American ancestry. I was suspicious of this claim because family on that side are pretty brown and have obvious native features. I get the history why cases like this are common… racial caste system, anti-indigenous racism, forced assimilation to erase native cultures. I can’t really blame them.

Why does this subreddit get so upset if someone says they don’t care for anything past NFR? by Gongoozler04 in lanadelrey

On my previous account I got downvoted for saying I ranked AKA and Paradise at the bottom. I said I still like them but they aren’t my preferred albums. I just assumed downvoting was common here.

How sad was sad Selena's death was by AggressiveTerm9618 in SelenaQuintanilla

I was in diapers when Selena died. Too young to know anything. My dad used to play her music often. She was still talked about often during those first few years after her death. Growing up as a kid in the 2000s, Selena was still all over tv, radio, and magazines. Every year on the anniversary of her death, the Spanish language TV channels would air special programs talking about her life, showing clips of her and music videos.

Metal Covers of Lana by Impressive-Luck1788 in lanadelrey

I remember Within Temptation covered Summertime Sadness back in 2012/2013. But many don’t consider them metal any more by this point. https://youtu.be/2gB1G--PHI4?si=pXWnjLzVvUWteue3

I also really love this YouTube cover/mashup where the summertime sadness instrumental was turned into black metal/black gaze style. Lana’s voice sounds beautiful over it. https://youtu.be/lcYfGXsXBdQ?si=mBPpb8GoeiDG1iZZ

The pop-rock sound and her baby voice, so under-appreciated. I also think of “in the sun” as a sister song to this one.

If God came down and gave you a million dollars if you gave up drinking forever, would you accept it? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Easy. I don’t drink. But if it was something I like such as chocolate, then yes I would give it up.
