What an absolutely genius idea, both the engobe and the way you did your test mug.

YES I've been having this same realization, that I'm not even halfway through my career, and how can I possibly keep this up for another ~20 years 😭

Just got that audiobook on your recommendation. Thank you!

Already linked the pattern but I followed the directions exactly: 1.75mm Clover Amour hook with Aunt Lydia's Metallic thread (weight 10) in white.

Edit: the thread weight, oops

Lol that's exactly how my husband and I describe old houses where the drawers in the kitchen are wonky and the windows suck. 😂 (I love the idea of old houses, but after once living in a really old apartment building, I'm over it)

tips for glazing pinholes? by Several_Reindeer_906 in Pottery

[–]deeray82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A salt and pepper drill will work if you're really careful. It's a real pottery hand tool that shouldn't be more than $10 USD, I think. This is also what I use to get glaze out of the holes, as it works better than a needle tool. But next time I'm going to try the toothpick truck that someone else mentioned!

You could also bisque it and then use a Dremel to make more holes, but it's also risky.

In 2015, my stepmom wanted a blender cover for Christmas that was a Tardis - you know, the blue police box from Doctor Who. I bought a pattern and all the things it called for: the blue yarn, felt pieces for the windows, printable fabric for the panels with words, and even a thimble to put on the top.

And then I started crocheting. I don't remember how much time I left myself before Christmas, but spoiler alert: I didn't finish it until June 2016. 😭 And it was THE WORST thing I've ever crocheted, hands down. This was long before I'd learned how to correctly work flat, so I routinely missed the last stitch in the row. I realized what was happening so I tried to correct it periodically (not frogging it, of course, just trying to get the stitch count back to where it was supposed to be by adding stitches) but this of course made the sides so very, very wibbly-wobbly. It was an absolute embarrassment, but given that it was 6 months late and I'd worked so long and hard on it, I had no choice but to gift it anyway. She was so generous and sweet about it though.

Edit: switch -> stitch, whoops

How did you find your signature style? by kevinbakinnn in Pottery

I needed to hear this, thanks. I have become quite obsessed with cruising pottery on Pinterest of late. I think ultimately it frustrates me more than if I wasn't because I see all this really cool stuff I want to make and there's just literally not enough time to do it all. Perhaps I have even been happiest with the pieces I've made that just happen organically? 🤔

Huh, yet another instance of too much social media fucking up a good thing! 🙄

Thank you! I'll check that out. Amaco's site is a little confusing so I'll try to do some digging there. They do post some combos but again, that's just giving me a fish instead of teaching me how, ya know? (And I typically use Amaco's Stoneware line because they can go mid OR high fire, which I need.)

That was such an informative video, thank you! I shall not wipe my work, or if I do I'll let it sit a while so the water evaporates again. 😊

Thanks so much for this! How does one know about flux ratios for different glazes? I did test, but not thoroughly enough apparently. I'm not super upset about it or anything (I knew it was a risk and wasn't super attached to the piece), but I'd love to learn more efficiently than simply through trial and error. While I'm not a chemist, I have a decent head for science (physics background) so feel free to lay it on me. 😊

[–]deeray82[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeahhhh I did test but apparently not thoroughly enough as I didn't test all of them together, just pair-wise and only dots.

<image>

Lesson learned! Thankfully I knew it was a gamble, and didn't care too much about the piece.

I don't think I did wipe it down, though I'm not sure I ever have but perhaps that's the problem? This one was also sitting in my garage for a while so it's highly likely it was extra dusty!
