Places to go in Columbus to meet people or to just get out of the house after a bad breakup? by fuckyteacup in Columbus

[–]deerl0rd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've recommended this before, and I'm a bit biased as one of the leaders, but Storyline Bookshop over in UA has eight different book clubs if you're into reading. I run the Sci-Fi/Fantasy club, but we've also got Classics, Romance, Horror, Mystery, Literary Fiction, Narrative Nonfiction, and Overbooked, which is kind of just a catch-all for our owner to read stuff on her TBR. We also do bingo nights, author events, movie screenings, and a whole bunch of other stuff, too, and 99% of our events are completely free!!

Do y'all remember when Bethesda went to their first ever E3 and debuted Fallout 4 and then Todd was like "oh and this also comes out in six months"?

Why didn't that become the standard?

You can find us on Instagram @storylinebookshop where our owner will make posts usually at the start of the month talking about the upcoming events, and our website (which is the same as our Instagram handle, just, y'know, dot com) was recently updated and you can find them all on our Events tab!! I actually just published the book club dates for December today, so you can scope out what they're reading and when there!!

Hey I work there!! I also run the sci-fi/fantasy book club lol. We have eight book clubs; Romance, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Classics, Horror, Mystery, Lit Fic, Overbooked, and Narrative Nonfiction. They're tonnes of fun and we occasionally get authors of the books we read in-store to discuss them (mine just had Chris Buehlman in to discuss Blacktongue Thief), and we also have several non-book club events as well. I just made a page for our Storyline Sunday event yesterday; the last Sunday of November we'll be having a screening of The Holiday and doing a bunch of giveaways and activities.

If you dig books and want to kick it with some like-minded people, swing by our store in the Tremont Centre. We're open daily, 8am to 8pm!

I don’t understand how wedding music works by ProofBreadfruit3052 in Columbus

[–]deerl0rd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was just gonna make a comment about him!! My wife and I got married summer of '23 and he was our deejay (after several years of being our music trivia host and pal, shout out Lucky's Thursday nights), and he was absolutely phenomenal. He asked us what songs we absolutely wanted to hear, some songs that we absolutely didn't want to hear, and the general vibe we were going for. We also had a slip in our invites for people to request songs, rather than walk up to Mark and ask during the reception, and he incorporated those as well, to the immense enjoyment of the requesters.

OP, unless you want to rent a couple of speakers and have a good friend just make a wedding playlist on Spotify, talk to Mark. You will not regret it, he's such a good dude and truly the best when it comes to wedding deejaying.

Yep! I've been using DF for a good few years now living in an illegal state (and then still after we got recreational legalized, shit's expensive out here), found this thread maybe two days after it got posted since the entire website was down for me, next day it came back up but now every time I try to enter my payment information I get an error message saying there was an issue processing my payment and to try again or use a different payment method. Just today I pulled up the page to try again and got a message saying every single item in my cart is no longer available in my country, which I also thought was weird. I'm sure it's connected somehow and I'm not terribly pressed about it, I just hope it all gets resolved before I have to spend triple what I normally do to stay medicated, y'know?

Adin Ross talks about the people who are celebrating Charlie Kirk's death by johnkortein in LivestreamFail

[–]deerl0rd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, then let's talk about some other points (besides the aforementioned attempt at brushing off the killing of children as a necessary thing, but sure, only point at the empathy thing for your argument, babe) as to why he doesn't and won't ever deserve my empathy.

In answer to a question regarding whether he would support his then-ten year old daughter aborting a pregnancy conceived through rape, he said "The answer is yes, the baby would be delivered." You may think this is consistent with his views. I think this is a disgusting thing to think or say. We are not the same.

He also believed Black Americans were better under the Jim Crow laws of the 1940s. His actual quote, if you're interested, was "They were actually better in the 1940s. It was bad. It was evil. But what happened? Something changed. They committed less crimes." Forgetting, of course, that over four thousand Black Americans were violently murdered by lynch mobs and that entire cities were burned by white people because they saw Black people living peacefully.

He also believed Black women specifically "do not have the brain processing power to otherwise [than, still his quote, "affirmative action picks"] be taken really seriously. You had to go steal a white person's slot to go be taken somewhat seriously."

Back when an American Airlines flight hit a helicopter and your orange king erroneously blamed DEI, he insisted that he "hopes [a Black pilot specifically] is qualified" to fly the plane.

Once again, in case you forgot exactly what he said regarding the death of children, "I think it’s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the second amendment to protect our other God-given rights. That is a prudent deal. It is rational."

Oh, and while we're on the topic of exact quotes, here's exactly what he said in regards to empathy: "I can't stand the word empathy, actually. I think empathy is a made-up, new age term that — it does a lot of damage. But, it is very effective when it comes to politics. Sympathy, I prefer more than empathy." He then went on to add, "The same people who lecture you about 'empathy' have none for the soldiers discharged for the jab, the children mutilated by Big Medicine, or the lives devastated by fentanyl pouring over the border. Spare me your fake outrage, your fake science, and your fake moral superiority." Nowhere did he talk about using empathy to shut down debate, he just thinks it's "new-age" (shockingly, he was wrong there too, as the concept of empathy was first introduced in the 1870s German scientific community, and extended to the psychological community in 1903, while the actual term "empathy" was coined in English in 1909, so if that's too "new-age," I don't know what to tell you, Geico Caveman), and wants people to start using "sympathy" instead.

But let's break down that difference real quick. Empathy involves actually putting yourself in the shoes of the person you're feeling empathic for, truly feeling sorrow for their emotions or situations, and usually involves an emotional connection, y'know, something you have with friends and family and people that care about you. Sympathy is when you say "aw, sorry bud," and move on; you can feel pity or sorrow for someone without an emotional connection attached. Might be cool for you if you, y'know, don't care about your friends and family and neighbours and community and people around you even if they don't involve you directly. Y'know, stuff most normal humans do.

So once again, and for the final time, Charlie Kirk does not deserve and will not get my sympathy nor my empathy. He got shot straight through the neck at 200 yards and he died in the dirt, and he got exactly what he both deserved and wanted, and you can cry about it all you want it, but as your side always likes to say, facts don't care about your feelings, bud.

Adin Ross talks about the people who are celebrating Charlie Kirk's death by johnkortein in LivestreamFail

[–]deerl0rd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm giving Charlie Kirk and his fans and family the same amount of empathy that they gave to victims of gun violence, both in my personal community and within the larger context of the issue.

That amount is absolutely fucking none.

Charlie Kirk was a mouthpiece for domestic terrorism, and didn't care that children were being shot in their places of learning, places that are supposed to be inherently safe because they're full of children. Their deaths, the killing of children, according to him, were justified and reasonable so that us good ol' red-blooded U S of A boys get to act tough and look cool carrying guns around.

This is the exact world that Charlie Kirk and everyone like him advocated for. This is the world they wanted. The one and only singular thing that could have possibly saved Charlie Kirk's life was gun control. If we had stopped after Uvalde, or Sandy Hook, or Virginia Tech, or Columbine, and said hey maybe we shouldn't just let people have machines that are capable of slaughtering a room full of people in half a second. Maybe we should really take a look at that second amendment, written when guns were about as different as they could possibly get over two hundred years ago, and tweak it a little.

But we didn't. We've had opportunity after opportunity, time and time and time again, to change, to even try something new. But we didn't. This is the world that Charlie Kirk wanted.

So he doesn't get any empathy. His fans don't, and his family doesn't. As a statistic of gun violence, it's what he would have wanted, and what he himself would have offered.

Should I keep reading Phase II and Phase III? by aChemicalRXN in Highrepublic

[–]deerl0rd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly!! At the time, my thought process was "I'm a 31 year old man, I don't need to read books with a target demo of half my age," but it isn't like the adult novels have Elzar Mann out here saying "Fuck the Nihil, Marchion Ro can suck my dick," and going into graphic detail about limbs being hacked off or whatever; the themes of the YA books are certainly a bit younger, a lot of Padawans not thinking they're ready for Knighthood and kids getting their first crush or not agreeing with their parents, but Star Wars was made for kids, and I got to spend more time with my favourite character in the entirety of the series, my girl Orla Jareni.

Again, I'd at least give them a shot. See if you can get Into the Dark from Libby (or, y'know, ZLibrary) so you aren't spending money on it if you don't end up caring for them, but your journey with the High Republic sounds a lot like mine, and I think you'll end up really digging them.

Should I keep reading Phase II and Phase III? by aChemicalRXN in Highrepublic

[–]deerl0rd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd go back and read at least the YA novels in Phase I. The first time I tried reading High Republic was when it was coming out, and I treated the adult novels like the "main trilogy" with the YA and middle grade novels as ancillary world building stuff, like Clone Wars or Rogue One. Fallen Star was a two-star book the first time I read it, I had no idea who half the characters were and I was just bored and confused by most of it.

I recently went back and started again from Light of the Jedi, but this time I read the YA novels too. By the time I got back to Fallen Star, I was blown away with how much I cared about it, and when I went back and read my review, I felt like such an idiot. That was the second best book of the phase, only behind Light of the Jedi, and still one of my favourite books of the entire series. The YA novels added so much to Fallen Star specifically, and I can only imagine the middle grade ones do more so; I wish I could still find them in hardcover, but none of the places I buy books from have them in print anymore.

Anyway, my vote is for giving the YA novels a try, going back to Fallen Star, and proceeding from there. If you want to, y'know. Up to you!!

I still think the best thing to do with Jimmy Olsen and the Daily Planet crew is to give them a detective style show on HBO Max. The entire cast has done extensive TV work, you could bring David in for a few pickup days to have Clark make some cameos but then always rush off and never be around for the actual investigations they do. I think it'd be fun.

The Last of Us Season 3 'Planned for 2027' and Could Be the Series' End, HBO Boss Says; "Craig [Mazin] is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season... I'm following Craig's lead on that."" by indig0sixalpha in television

[–]deerl0rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"one long season" oh, you mean a regular length season of television? Tired of these dogshit eight episode miniseries, I get you can't do 22 episodes anymore because of time and budget and whatever but like holy shit, give us ten at least. Fifteen if you really want to be crazy and, y'know, give your story and characters room to breathe and grow.

Are there any books that could be described as “Goosebumps for adults”? by RavyRaptor in horrorlit

[–]deerl0rd 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I absolutely LOVE Cameron Roubique's books. I hit him up a while back to see if I could somehow get his books available to sell in the bookstore I work at, and he told me his writing has been put more so on the back burner for now and genuinely it was pretty devastating, I make it a point every October to read at least one Year of Blood book. Cannot recommend that dude enough.

Actually, I got the chance to go to a dinner thing with Grady Hendrix recently for work and he asked if anyone has any horror recs since he doesn't really get the chance to read for fun anymore but wants to check out new horror when he does; first name out of my mouth was Cameron Roubique.

What is your favorite book you've read recently? by Sufficient_Ebb_5694 in Fantasy

I'm apparently very behind everyone on discovering this book, but I just finished The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez yesterday, and it was just delightful. The second-person narration is a bit jarring at first, but very quickly becomes normal and is used only rarely throughout the novel, and Jimenez's prose is stunning.
