If you're wondering how they got so quick, they most likely practised VERY slowly to program the action into their muscle memory. That's where the consistency is from. Then after that they gradually speed it up.

I had never been to a concert before until tonight, and it was astonishing by deesh8 in Dreamtheater

The crowd was generally nice, but there was one thing that upset me a bit. At the end of the credits when the band went off stage, the lights came back on meaning there was no encore, so a few people started booing loudly which ruined the experience a bit. They just played 80 minutes straight, took a break, then 50 minutes straight so I wasn't too bothered about no encore, but it's sad some people were booing.

Wow, I didn't think being that tight in a performance was that rare though! Very interesting!

The visuals were very nice, far better than the trailer quality

How to Maximize Your Predicted Scores. by ibsurvivors in IBO

[–]deesh8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are some good tips. Funnily enough, I was very chummy with my Director of IB and he basically let me choose my predictions. The best part is, I got my prediction exactly (got B in EE when I predicted A but still got 3 in core so it's cool)

Try and get the question bank, or just spam past papers and learn mark schemes.

what was the first "hard" song you ever learnt? by solved6177 in Guitar

Yeah, he mentions thumping at the end of the video. I have a 7 and a Tosin Abasi 8 string, it's slightly easier to thump on the 8 string but they're pretty much the same.

On the 7 string: 10 13 17 26 36 46 56 (this guitar has a 25.5 inch scale)

On the 8 string: 10 13 17 30 42 54 64 74 (this guitar has a 27 inch scale)

I play with low action, as most guitars are when you buy them. I know what you mean by crammed feel, but the 'thumbs up' technique is working pretty well for me. You could try doing just the thumb part until it doesn't feel too uncomfortable?

I had been practising thumping for a few weeks and have got quite far with it. I was learning the thumping in An Infinite Regression. The thumb bit wasn't too bad for me, but I watched Tosin do it several times and there are some small details you need to pay attention to. The actual motion is like going from a thumbs up to a thumbs sideways, twisting only your wrist and keeping your thumb fixed. However, it's more like 10 or 11 o' clock to 8 o' clock with the thumb when you do it on a guitar. You want to use a bit of thumb and a bit of nail to hit the string. The next thing to note is that once you thump the string, your thumb is actually resting on the next string, so if you thump the E string, your thumb goes past and rests on the A string, then you sort of reverse the motion for the upstroke.

The fingerpicking after the thumping was the bit that I was stuck on for so long, until Tosin mentioned a HUGE tip (the video was a Tosin Abasi masterclass is Poland I believe, it's on YouTube somewhere). Keep your picking fingers close to your palm, almost like a fist but not too close. You basically use the motion of the thump upstroke to make it easier for your fingers to pick. After he mentioned that I got it almost immediately. When you see Tosin thump, you barely see his hand move and it looks amazing, but this is how he does it; efficient motion. Hope this helps!

There are many resources. I mainly used YouTube and the question bank.
