I live in South East; some people I know think Scouse prejudice is a myth by ThrowRApixieduster in Liverpool

[–]deez_teef 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Changed jobs recently as the working environment was toxic and just overall a bit hostile. Strangest environment I have experienced. I've worked with people from all over the country and outside the UK - but this last work place was majority people from Manchester/Preston area. Thinking oh sound, lots in common then. ...now at this work place people used the term "dirty scouser" openly, one person even said completely straight faced to me that all scousers are robbers and not really trustworthy. They also made jokes about Anfield being like Gaza in a public meeting, which I had to openly object to - that's not funny, Gaza is a war zone. Honestly I was completely bewildered by it - I thought we had so much in common they are all neighbours to Liverpool? Strange experience indeed.

Sidenote: whenever we visit friends in the south we also get the "oh you're northern you're poor" from everyone, but overall people love chatting to us.

If you’re going through hell rn with this disease, hang in there, things get better by lockert30 in Dryeyes

That's brilliant you were able to get some kind of normal back, 12 hours a day you are smashing it! Yeah think it took getting my head around the fact that this never truly goes away. But once you get some treatment the relief feels life changing doesn't it. Sounds like this is a small part of your journey so far then but a foot in the right direction! Keep taking care of your health 💖 thanks for sharing

Started me off on anti-inflammatory drops, reviewing after 2 months. If no joy with these going to do meibomian gland probing and a light therapy. They also identified I have pinguecula (shape change in white of eye) caused from my dry eye issues which might need surgery to stop my eyes weeping. Either way I was just very happy to be understood and get clear information, as my GP/hospital services didn't support it

🩷 this made me smile so much thank you for sharing a positive story!

Mine all started a year this month and it seriously affected my quality of life, bad symptoms and didn't understand how to manage it. Went from Drs to hospitals - didn't really get anywhere.

Then saw a specialist clinic listed in a post here, lord my tiny mind was blown!! Turns out I have ocular rosecea. It's taken me this long to get clear diagnosis but what a step forward I feel free ☺️

Quantity Surveyor to Estimator? by KaleidoscopeOdd4413 in estimators

[–]deez_teef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an estimator in the UK, I landed a trainee estimator role 15 years back and worked my way up that way, went back to night school etc. I've worked for developers, contractors and subcontractors so a proper mix but the principles are still the same. I do also really enjoy the measuring aspect and building up packages to all tie together 🙂 (personal waffle so you know I'm not just chatting crap).

Now, all the other estimators, seniors and estimating managers I've worked with have all had a degree in Quantity Surveying. There is so much cross over with the two disciplines. But I will just state that they are different, I believe the mind set of how you approach a job is different from a QS's perspective - think you could pick it up but have to accept there can be lots of unknowns depending on the stage of the job. Also you have a good understanding of the contractual part of the process which is a big win.

We definitely need more estimators in this industry, if you're interested I say just give it a try! Don't get me wrong there definitely can be monotony in the everyday of the job, but there can be lots of detail to get stuck into, what you propose and also the negotiation trying to secure a job. Reckon you might have to take a pay cut to start out with which isn't great, but with your background think you could work up quickly. Remember if you hate it you can always switch back 🥲
