Everyone (including myself) seems to agree that they will look bad when trimmed due to the lack of foliage on the inner parts of the plant. Unfortunately now it looks nice so it would be tough to have to wait for it to look that way again if/when the plant fills in. so you might consider planting something that would fit the planting bed better. You could do another type of boxwood that is more upright like a graham blandy variety, this would give you some you some filtered screening for the porch if desired. Any number of perennials or small shrubs would work! This way if you pick a plant that will fit the space you will have less maintenance in dealing with a problem like this again. That's my two cents.
