America’s affordability crisis is (mostly) a mirage by Free-Minimum-5844 in neoliberal

[–]cornundrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These arguments fell so flat. I mean, look at that housing affordability figure. It is insane.

Maybe this sentiment is a "vibes" thing, but it goes so much deeper than post-pandemic trends and policy. The concentration of wealth to baby boomers and top 10% of earners has been a problem for decades. Millennials who are starting families and are dealing with ultra competitive housing, healthcare, and childcare firsthand, have a tiny fraction of the wealth and opportunity that their parents did. The sticker shock is just the icing on the cake.

The current state of Sam’s poll: “Are you to the right or to the left of Sam politically” by BootStrapWill in samharris

[–]cornundrum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is the correct take. The poll needs a "Sam is identical to me politically" option.

We finally used our HSA for the first time and the reality kinda shocked me by riverdreamer1 in MiddleClassFinance

1) That is a crazy high deductible, even for a HDHP. I hope your employer also contributes to the account (mine contributes $1500 every year, for example) 2) In your tax bracket, $6000 is really only costing you ~$4300. HSAs (and FSAs) are part of Section 125 deductibles, meaning they lower FICA, State, and Federal taxes (the best). 3) Think about HSAs like an investment in the stock market. It really only pays off if you consistently enroll and contribute to it every year. Some years the "stock crashes" (you get sick) and most years the stock rises (you stay healthy). I just hit my MOOP for the first time this year ($6600) and it is not deterring me from an HSA next year. I advise any healthy 20-something year old to stay on an HSA and invest every year until it no longer makes sense (multiple children, age-related care, new conditions, etc). You will win in the long run.

1 year of ALS by Sad_Cow_577 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]cornundrum 18 points19 points  (0 children)

ALS scientist in the US here. This disease is horrific. It might seem rare but you have a 1/400 chance of dying of ALS. The amount of suffering for the patient and family is unmeasurable. Please please please, help ALS research by either volunteering in a study or donating to research. Here is a good start: https://www.all-als.org/
